To be fair he backtracks with forward skating much more often than backwards, like the guy he modeled himself after (Duncan Keith). His backward skating has gotten better, though.

Loved that he did that against Detroit of all teams as that was one of Lidstroms specialty. Great leverage and stick work. His hockey smarts are second to none on this team... maybe until Saturday. He's surprisingly strong for his size too.
+1 tonight, -1 on the season. That last line of defense of the main boards is about to fall, if Lane ends up positive they're done.

Lane has improved his defensive game considerably. And obv. straight +/- is dumb as it includes minuses from PP. 5-on-5 he is +70 -58 = +12, all strenths he is +111 -80 = +31.

Regular +/- is ES and doesn't include PP, but it does include empty net situations where most of the minus he sported in the season came from.
+/- includes PP, but only the - part. Lane is +3 at even strength(78GF, 75GA) and -4 on the powerplay(33GF, 4GA) which puts him at -1 on the season but yeah, empty nets goals aside he's +11.
