Cale Makar signed his 6 year contract in July 2021 at age 21, at $9M AAV after two full years in the NHL, which took up 11.0% of the 81.5M salary cap after two full seasons where he had:

• 2019-20: 50 pts in 57 games and won Calder trophy
• 2020-21: 44 pts in 44 games

Using the projected salary cap of 104M in 2026-27 (when Hutson's contract would come into effect), we can project different AAVs depending on the % of cap limit that should be allocated to the contract

Even if you try to make the case that he isn't at Makar's level and thus shouldn't get 11% of salary cap, assuming a 6 year contract, we would be lucky to get him below $9-10M. Caufield himself signed his 8 year deal for 9.40% of the total cap at the time, so an equivalent amount for Lane at that % would be $9.78M

Sky is the limit for this kid and I would be happy to pay him what he deserves.

What's important is how good Hughes will be at convincing his players what percentage he thinks is sufficient for his best players. If his argument, in trying to assemble a perennial winner is that no player, no matter how good, can get more than 10% of the Cap in the year he signs his contract because, otherwise, the Habs will be unable to assemble a contender, expect to see lesser term for contracts signed by players, so they can cash in again at a higher Cap ceiling sooner.

For second NHL contracts, don't forget the argument about half the years being RFA years andnonly 4 UFA years being bought out. It's also a sign of good faith for the team to extend 8 years of guaranteed security at a still relatively high pay day, sometimes with only a year, or even half a year of evidence to justify the contract.

If I counter your assertion about getting 12 mil, it means i simply counter your assertion about getting 12 mil. What other posters have said has no relevance whatsoever to what I said. You also completely ignored what I stated about his RFA years. You are analyzing his salary demands as if he's a UFA with many years of experience. I very much doubt he'll get anything more than 10 mil per on an 8 year deal, because 1-he only played one season and no one has a crystal ball to see if he'll get 100 pts in a season (which was probably your lamest argument), 2-he can't expect to be paid like a free agent for the entirety of his contract 3-he's small and frail, and Habs are taking part in a risk by signing him so early. It's a quid pro quo and because of that, he's not gonna get paid like a top 5 D in the league.

Furthermore, if you look at Kent's history so far, outside of Slaf, all his signings were pretty good and either around what people expected, or sometimes lower.

Laine has never had anywhere close to that sort of PPG pace in his entire career, but naturally, it's all him, right?

It rather looks like the opposite. Laine is getting a lot of PP goals because Hutson is highly efficient at passing the puck quickly and precisely.

I always liked Subban but he was never on this level. Hutson is going into this new category of dominant point per game defenseman, the Makar, Hughes category.

He had his adjustment period at the start of the season, now he's killing it.

He's already a legit point per game producer, with this lineup. He can be more when there's more than 1 scoring line.

Subban only had ONE 60 points season and Hutson already passed that at his first season.

Idk about that. Subban had his moments, and was a great player in his own right, but even at his best, he would try stupid spin-o-rama moves in transition and lose the puck, creating odd-man rushes for the opposing team, he’d take himself out of the play trying for a big hit, he’d take dumb penalties at the worst times, he’d constantly flop and dive and give opposing teams bulletin board material by saying dumb shit to the media, would chirp and run his mouth all game. He was very much a “double-edged sword” type of player.
