Player Discussion Lane Hutson: Part 3 - Calder Edition

Regarding Hutson's salary negotiations.

The highest paid defensemen are at around 11 million a year. They signed their contracts earlier when the cap was lower, but they are also eating up UFA years.

I think that 8 years, 11 million/year should be enough. It makes him the second highest paid defensemen in the NHL and takes him to UFA.

Suzuki is in my opinion a more valuable player (for now), but he signed his contract when the cap was lower.

Should be enough? Hutson isn't getting close to 11 M right now. Not after having played only 1 nhl season.

Hutson still has RFA years ahead though.

I’d try hard to get him to accept Caufield money. Caufield could’ve asked for more but agreed - and helped set - the self imposed cap we have now. Hopefully Hutson agrees.

If he wants more though - we’d just have to pay the guy. He’s just too good.

I think we can get him at 7.5. We’ll see.

Hutson is better than Caulfield and benefits from three years of cap inflation.

Caufield had 48 goals in his first 82 under MSL. He could’ve demanded more but he didn’t. He agreed to set the self imposed cap we have now.

That’s what we have to hope Hutson does. But yeah, the cap going up could change things.

Like I said, if we have to pay him more - do it. Get him for as long and cheap as you possibly can.

If we're lucky, it will be in 8.25-8.5 range.

I think 9 mil will be the sweet spot.

7-8-8-9-10-10-10-10 or whatever

It could be argued that Hutson is a bigger provider versus his field, than Suzuki is.

Sanderson got 8.05m x 8, Owen Power got 8.35m x 7 and Faber got 8.5m x 8. Lane will slot in somewhere between 8.5-10m. I think 9.5m will get it done.
Imo, neither Faber or Power should've got those contracts but that's what happens in today's NHL. Young, unproven players get massive deals. Lane has proven he's an offensive juggernaut which imo means, he's getting at minimum $9M AAV........and I'm ok with it.

With the cap going up so much, the imposed player cap won't last.

Pretty sure both Hutson and Demidov will break it.
I hope not. But I’d certainly pay more for Hutson if he demands it.

Demidov is a while away so he’ll almost certainly break it if the cap goes up by a lot.

Hutson seems like a great kid who wants to win first and foremost, so yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he accepts 8 mil per. Problem is the agent, although he does have Quartexx rep.

What do you guys think is this guy's ceiling? 75 pts? More? I think it will largely depend on how many shots he takes and how much more he can improve it. IMO if he can get some chances like Markov used to by sneaking through the back door, he can maybe get 12-15 goals

He could hit some PPG seasons when Demidov is here.

His absolute ceiling is Quinn Hughes with slightly worse goal scoring. So p/gp or greater. Whether he gets there or not is the question.

Nah Faber definitely deserved it. Guy was the first guy out playing in all situations averaging 25 minutes a night (most on his team) in his rookie year. That is rare.

I think Hutson signs somewhere between 8x8-8.5.

He had to given their D roster. Imo, he's the Temu version of Charlie McAvoy but with tariffs put on his contract :)
