Player Discussion Lane Hutson: Part 3 - Calder Edition

Many people build narrative and they are so invested in them that they just can't move on and try to find anything to reinforce their narrative and make it a reality.

Probably one of the many who thought Hutson wasn't ready for the NHL this summer and that type of small D would never make it big in the NHL.......but truth is : The NHL wasn't ready for Hutson

He's got that Michael Jordan hunger

Yeah, it's that internal drive that makes me excited. When you mix elite talent with that drive, that's when you get guys who are special and who are also more likely to have a long shelf life.

He's all about hockey, all the time and in hockey circles, it's crosby/mckinnon level obsession.

If someone says that Hutson is bad defensively, just ignore them. It's not worth it.

He has 62 points. 4th among ALL NHL defensemen. He has played 20+ minutes a game as well. The majority of his points are at even strength. He’s more than effective in his own end. Never saw this coming! Fantastic! If he doesn’t win the Calder? All fan bias aside? The Calder is a political joke. My .02

Imagine if the leafs drafted a franchise level talent with a third round pick. Comes onto the scene breaking rookie records.

Some of the fellas here would have a hard time coming to terms with that painful realization too, and would tell themselves lies to give comfort until they can no longer believe their own lies.

They are simply in the denial stage of grief. They will come around eventually.

I watched a short Q&A where Hutson revealed that Patrick Kane was his favorite player growing up and that's who he reminds me of with the puck on his stick.

He is such a good player and so much fun to watch. The last player that made the Bell Centre ooh and ahh like he does was Kovalev.

On that note, the fans at the BC have no equal in sport; the knowledge of the tiniest plays in the game is always in their grasp and a reaction is given.

If Demi God comes as advertised, it will be constant mayhem.

It must be said that its true that his secondary assists numbers are high, about top of the league luck. So in a sense, he may be a tad less impressive than Hughes in his rookie season offensively.

With that said, Hughes is a great player and Hutson is miles ahead defensively at the same age, and I must say, just plain better defensively.

While Hutson has a high amount of secondary assists this season, Hughes and makar both played for higher scoring teams in 19-20.

To the tune of .3 to .4 more gf/gp. 10% more at least.

More like the post December habs, where hutson has 51 points in his past 52 games

Wtf are you talking about? Hughes had about the same amount of primaries as Hutson.

Hutson has 24 in 74 (0.32 pg) and Hughes had 23 in 68 (0.34 pg). Check the facts before spouting your nonsense.

And secondary assists aren't all luck, especially for D that handles the transition so much and so well.

Hutson also has higher production at ES. 0.50 pg vs 0.41 pg for Hughes.

Yup, and Hughes and Makar both had PP time from the get-go, and dare I say played in easier divisions, with teams giving up more goals while playing less games so far.

Since the 4 nations break, Hutson is top of the league, Makar level
His +14 is good for 3rd in the NHL (2 D at +15)

That is damn impressive.

Elevating at this point in the season is tough for any player, let alone a rookie playing the longest hockey season of his career...

Franchise player in the making.

He's a very knowledgeable dude with a perfect casting as the Habs fan Grinch. I don't think he's actually doing it on purpose, I think he's kind of autistic and stubborn, weird guy, and that makes him a natural pooper.

That said, his pessimistic lean makes him sound smart when players turn out to be bad and stupid when they pan out.
He 100% is

The other day on a podcast with Brunet when discussing why he had Hutson 3rd for Calder (which is fine if that's what he believes) he dismissed the fact that Hutson has been a key player on a team in a playoff spot.

Then minutes later says he has Wolf 1st because he helped the Flames challenge for a playoff spot for a little while.

Its his thing.

I find him ridiculous and arrogant.

He's like many of us HFboarders (I include myself there). You've so over-invested your brutal takes that it becomes hard enough to take them back that they then bias your reasoning. He had Hutson as a gadget player and has kept underrating him since the start.

While Hutson has been better after a slower start to the season, after getting more quality TOI once he was allowed to QB the PP1 wave, he has also gotten better in every aspect of his game and that is what has been most impressive, instead of seeing him turn into more of a Ghostisbehere to accumulate all the points.

Hutson's hockey brain is huge and his desire to continue to improve in all aspects of the game even bigger.

I would even consider his 200% devotion to hockey and nothing else to be a little unhealthy, but, ifhe keeps getting better and producing, all the better --It's not my health.
