Player Discussion Lane Hutson: Part 3 - Calder Edition

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

He's pretty tight lipped so it's hard to say.

Does he value loyalty? Then he stays

Does he value a real shot at one more cup before he retires? Colorado makes most sense.

Does he feel sentimental about his boy hood team to the point that he wants finish there? Then it's Montreal.

If he decides to move, he will choose where he goes, so it won't take the farm to get him. The penguins will be lacking leverage so some of these offers im seeing are inflated.
I would offer both of our 1st round picks.

If Crosby told management he wants to go to avs they'd make it happen
Of course.

But I don’t see Crosby proactively asking to be traded. What I do see happening is teams going to Pittsburgh with aggressive offers and them bringing it to Crosby asking if he’d approve.

Crosby might waive for one or maybe a few teams. He might say: ‘Okay but only Montreal, Colorado and maybe another…’

The point is, we should be very aggressive here. Offer three firsts. That will get their attention.

I honestly don't think being aggressive changes anything. IF Crosby decides he wants to move, then it won't have anything to do with MTL or COL's offer. And he won't give the Pens any options either - he will have one destination in mind and only that destination.

Currently, I Would imagine even Sid doesn't know if he wants to stay or cup chase with another team. So In meantime I agree we need to get their attention & let em know we're interested. But no need to offer 3 1sts. Let him first make his decision to come home to MTL & then the negotiation part with Dubas will be easy

Regarding all this Crosby talk, the man has nothing left to prove and I seriously doubt he has any intention of uprooting his life for a trade. I'll guess he chooses his untainted Pittsburgh legacy over the remote chance at chasing another Cup.

The Montreal angle would be more about playing for the team he grew up cheering for and having things come full circle before he retires.

It's more romantic than practical, but still fun to speculate about.

Intense competitors love competing to win, and elite athletes near the end of their careers know full well that nothing in life will ever replicate the feeling of competing like that.

If Crosby leaves Pitt, it won't be to prove something to anyone, it'll be because Pitt gives up the re-tooling attempts and commits to rebuilding in a way that makes the playoffs even less likely than it currently is.

Given the level he's still playing at, and the obvious joy he has competing, I doubt he'll retire until injuries or physical decline force the issue... another 1-2 seasons after this contract ends is completely reasonable. I doubt he wants the last 3-4 seasons of his career to go like this one has and unless Dubas performs a miracle this summer, this season may be the best of what Pitt can expect in that window.

All speculation, of course, but my guess is he'll stick around for next season both to see if the Pens can re-tool on the fly and to focus on the Olympics... but assuming the pens are in the same situation (botyom 1/2 of the league) he'll agree to get moved at the deadline next year, allowing the Pens to get as big a return as possible while getting himself to a team that he can contend with in the last 2 years of this contract.

Crosby isn’t going to initiate anything. You have to aggressively go to Pittsburgh and tell them you’re serious. It gets the ball rolling.

None of us can know what Crosby wants. We know he loves Montreal. We know that the Pens should rebuild and we have tons to give them. We also know that if Crosby came here he’d have a shot at winning some cups again. We’re an up and coming team with cap space and tons to trade with.

Go to them, be aggressive and see what happens. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

I would imagine the pens & Crosby have already had these discussions. I'm sure they know where eachother are at. I'm sure Pittsburgh already knows it's either MTL, COL or maybe 1-2 other teams he would be interested in. And I'm sure talks are ongoing.

It just depends on if/when Crosby wants to move. Nothing to do with any offers, Sid doesn't care what's coming back. Being too aggressive off the rip like this doesn't do us any good. We would not have to pay up the ass if MTL is his chosen destination.

It absolutely does have to do with offers.

Again, Crosby isn't going to go to Pittsburgh and say 'Hey, trade me to Montreal. They've got an up and coming team and I'd like to go there.'

If Montreal goes to Pittsburgh with an offer it's a different story. That sparks conversations at least. Does it mean he comes here? Of course not. But it's a completely different thing if we go and are asking him to come here. That's the only way we'd have a shot at getting him.

And of course the whole thing might be moot. He may just retire there. Or maybe he goes to Colorado with his buddy. Nobody can know. But it could be a situation where if we go to him maybe he waives for us and Colorado and maybe some other select teams.

You don't know if you don't try.
