Player Discussion Lane Hutson: Part 3 - Calder Edition

Hutson’s vision has been elite since game one. Now the rest of his game has started to catch up and emerge. Particularly his skating.

As Hutson gets stronger, it will go right to his feet and his overall ability to impact the game. An ability that is already readily apparent and significant.

Hutson is already a revelation. What the rest of league knows (and fears) is that he will only get better. I’m excited to see Hutson and Demidov on the ice together in the coming years. Particularly on the power play.

This could get quite interesting.

Watching his skating live compared to earlier in the season last night was wild.

He’s improved *alot*. I’m amazed how quickly he can come up one of the wings, make a play, the puck ends up around the boards and somehow he is the defenseman pinching to keep it in at the opposite side of the ice. How the hell did he get over there so fast?!

Anticipation. He processes the game better than most of the players he plays with and against,. There are 31 other teams that are kicking themselves for letting this prodigy fall to 64 OA.

We got lucky.

They have them self to blame for it. They could have draft his brother Cole Hutson and they decided to ignore him. Caps are lucky to have him in the second round. He is having a great D+ 1 year!

It's definitely a real thing now

For most of the year I definitely thought it was Mack 100% for the Calder

But right now, you just could not say you would be shocked if he gets the Win
This is out-of-this-world stuff we are seeing right now from a rookie Offensive D, and we've had a *couple*
But this entire build would be stuck in the mud a bit if it weren't for THIS miracle pick

I almost crashed my car celebrating when I heard the pick from the guy live on tsn690, I'll never forget that lol

Could we see back to back Calder Winners for the Habs this year and next? Jesus

And 31 teams (including us) who will likely feel the same way about Cole Hutson.

I wasn't one of those posters but I can understand the concerns. He's such a small player, especially for a blueliner.
Yes, and it isn't harsh or critical to wonder if an undersized player will be able to do at the NHL level what they did against inferior competition at lower levels.

I just watched the interview with Hughes and Seravilli and he mentioned the same thing. He said that they had Lane ranked higher than 62 but didn't consider taking him till then because of concerns about his size.

Even though they eventually got him they didn't see anything that other teams missed, it was more about luck than anything. It all worked out and everyone can fist pump and say I told you so but life rarely works that way. We got very lucky to get two top 5 picks in one draft and the best one wasn't even a priority.

I watched a fair bit of his play in Boston and he was otherworldly. I believed in him. I tried not to get too excited but to me he looked like he had superstar potential. Obviously size was a concern but he played the game in a way I hadn't really seen before. I won't hammer somebody for being skeptical but on this one I can say that I was right. He's the real deal.

Remember when posters didn’t think Hutson’s game would transition to NHL?

Yeah good times….
A lot of the comments before the season were, quite frankly, ignorant.

For example, the criticism of how he defended skating forward was seen as a workaround to overcome skating deficiencies when it’s really an intentional tactic. Dinosaur comments about how he should ‘crossover and skate backwards’.

This was especially obvious when a video of Nicholas’ training drew criticism of his ability to cross over, when it was clear the intent was to avoid crossing over.

Anyway, it was good for the laughs.

Look at these numbers man:

This little weird 12 year old looking alien skates llike a madman.

What impresses me a lot about his game is how very few bad reads offensively he makes. Whereas most defenseman often just shoot randomly or make low creativity play (dump or just give it back to the other defenseman), Hutson always seem to take that little bit of time to make a read and execute a perfect pass.

This kid is fantastic and really glad Montreal drafted him. If he does get better, even more incredible but if he doesn't, doesn't matter as he's already fantastic. Checking out the stats and he's among the best D already, and then see what Makar has been doing for years., how good is that Makar? I don't see many of his games and if Hutson is this impressive, he must be really fun to watch.
Makar is generational imo

The thing that impresses me the most is his "failed" pinches at the blueline. He's truly remarkable at exerting pressure at the opponents blue line and forcing them into a quick uncontrolled pass and then getting back into position defensively.

Yeah.

And his skating... Hutsons speed stats are incredible, but Makar's are otherwordly:

I watch him around 10-15 times a year excluding the playoffs and aside from a bit of an "off"year last year, if you can call it that, his speed, agility, compete and IQ just make no sense. Hutson though, is a special player himself.

Even if Sergachev and McDonagh have been both bad trades.

Hutson is miles ahead of these 2. He is already better offensive talent than Markov and Subban.

People will said to me to calm down, but NO FREAKING WAY!!

Looks at games and looks at the RECORD//STATS.
Being a bigger offensive threat than Subban is saying a lot. Subban played in a league where scoring was way down. In his prime some scoring titles were won with like 85 points. Getting 60 in that league was a real accomplishment.

But Hutson is a level up. That's a huge compliment to him because Subban was a HOF talent when he was with us.

Yeah.

I don't expect Hutson to reach Makar level. But, it has to be said that he's doing this as a rookie. Imagine him in four years.
