He was 5’7. Even when he was playing in Boston there was doubt. At no time was he ever considered a sure fire superstar man
So, no. If you think he’s 95 percent chance of a superstar then it’s a different story. But if that’s the case, he’d have gone in the first round either by the Habs or someone else.
Hutson had amazing potential but the odds of him fulfilling it were very risky. I think the Canadiens understood this and went for safe players that would pan out. Huston was a home run swing they figured they could get later and they were right.
Quinn Hughes was one point behind the 24 year old victor oloffson and Makar had enough points in his first 41 games to outscore oloffson by 4 or 5 at the midway point but missed 9 games in the first half.
Still very elite company

20 year old, 5'9 D-man making the pros look silly in his first 40 nhl games. I can't believe the homerun hit here.
We've been pretty spoiled with star D in Montreal in the last 20 years with Markov and Subban, so I don't think we're fully appreciating how good Hutson is here. f***ing stud.
The league has adapted to his game by giving him way less time and space, and he's still making players look dumb.

One has to distinguish between skating fast and playing fast.
Hutson, has an awkward skating style, just look how high he carries his stick with hunched over shoulders when trying to accelerate without the puck. But he has just enough straightforward speed to induce opposing players to respect his rushes when transporting the puck that allows him to use his dart-like lateral skating ability, quick twitch change of direction and head and body feints to gain the time, space and separation to use his incredible play making ability. Hutson is no Hughes or Matheson, he doesn't have their elite skating and top end speed: but he plays fast. He reads the play, he finds the open teammate and makes intuitive passes all within a fraction of the time that most other players need.
If he stays healthy, Hutson will soon be a perennial challenger for the Norris trophy. Such is the speed that this remarkably talented rookie can process the game. And what should be unsettling to the many Montreal haters out there: he's only going to get better as he matures.
Hutson is showing that he may well be one of those very, very rare players who can, by themselves, materially change the trajectory of the team that they play for.

No he doesn't. Lane simply needs to historically outproduce rookie dmen.
If Lane gets close to any kind of record and people will talk about it by then. He might get top 3 for rookie dmen assists (1st place=60, 2nd place=55, Lane is at 27 in 40 games), or top 5 for Evp (1st place 40, 5th place 35, Lane is at 17 in 40 games.
The highest scoring rookie C is Stastny at 109 points and Celebrini is pacing around 70 points, which would place him top 20 rookie C all-time. Highest D is Murphy at 76 points and Lane is pacing upwards of 60 points, which would place him top 10 all-time.
60 points by a rookie D hasn't been done in 30 years, since Lidstrom.
For Cs, Barzal did 85 less than 10 years ago and Crosby went over 100p close to 20 years ago.
If Lane gets to 60 points and Celebrini to 70, it will be robbery to give it to Macklin.
Even worst if Habs make the playoffs.
Im not disagreeing with anything you said and this doesn’t change anything because both are top 2 d in the world but makar and Hughes would have both scored 60+ in their rookie seasons if it wasn’t shortened due to covid

This is my thinking as well but Sharks fans really think Celebrini will win the Calder if he can get to 70 points.

He has missed 12 games so that would mean 70 pts in 70 games. Probably where they are coming from.
If Hutson gets to 60 pts, it's a real debate on who should win.

Even if they had, they're the two best Ds in the league. Generational Ds. Still hasn't been done since Lidstrom. With Hutson, Hughes and Makar, it would be a dozen rookie Ds in history who hit 60 points. There are about 2 dozen Cs who've hit 70 points as a rookie. More if you count guys like McDavid who missed part of his rookie season because of injury.

Im 33. I've never seen a dman like lane on this team. I've rarely seen a dman like him in the whole league. Special for sure. Very exciting

You have one in the NHL and the other not. I totally get people liking Lane first… I like Demidov. Seeing how he solves problems on the ice is like enjoying a work of art.

At first when him and Matheson were put together I thought it'd be a disaster, but they have actually really improved as a pairing and are playing big minutes without being sheltered.
Matheson can be frustrating at times with some of his decisions, however he's improved on the right side which has been huge in allowing Guhle to play back on his natural side.

I'm... older than you are.
I haven't ever seen a player like him stylistically and I said this even when I was watching his Boston games. It's a very unique style of play.
There's a bit of Subban to him and a lot of Markov. I'd say his a bit of a hybrid between the two. Subban's rushes were spectacular and I don't think we'll see that kind of thing from Hutson but Hutson can rush pretty well and he's so cerebral. He's so good at creating open space.
Coming out of Boston I felt he had superstar potential. It was all a question as to how it would translate to the NHL. Well, I'd say we have our answer. He's the real deal.

Matheson's improved so much... I can't remember the last gaffe and he used to make them on the regular. Maybe he was trying to do too much before, I don't know. But with him and Hutson on one pairing and Ghule/Carriere on the other, we've got a much, much better blueline than we did.
