New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

Let’s see what ya got, kid.

Well said. This is the right angle to take.

Darche may fail...Or he may succeed. We don't know, but he deserves a chance.

And Malkin/Collins deserve big credit for not only entrusting a franchise to and up and coming rookie executive, but...Not going the safe/uninspired route of recycling an experienced GM who already failed at their previous job.

If Lou was still here you could've predicted the offseason (and results next season). And if Jarmo or Bergevin came here you may not have been able to predict the offseason, but you would be able to predict the results in the long-term.

With Darche we have a wild card, but I'm going to trust the best owners this franchise has ever had that we just got a GM better than Lou. And if he's better than Lou (and hopefully much better), then there's a reason to be hopeful.

If you want to know part of the reason why I wanted Darche, it's because, in addition to simply looking at Bergevin's previous work, I could anticipate of the media/fans would receive a Darche hiring vs a Bergevin hiring. Take a look here:

Islanders Hire Darche as GM

Let's hope if it's Darche, he can build what Lou struggled to do.
Build an exciting, quick team sprinkled with some edge that can makes us a perennial contender.
He needs to maneuver out of some bad contracts and get us headed in the right direction.

Ha. That's a funny way to put it - Lou "struggled" to build an exciting/quick team.

You mean constantly targeting medium/slow skaters who have average talent for 1st round picks (and then overpaying them for too long) didn't make the Isles exciting?

Lou GMed like it was the 90's - Where slower skaters could thrive and there was no salary cap. Time to act like it's 2025. So happy to be moving on...

I'm happy with Darche - certainly better than some of the other options we were hearing about. It's really interesting if the owners are giving him total responsibility as a first time GM. Going back to the Botta post that Periferal posted way back, we were not in the room when the candidates were being interviewed, but Darche must have really impressed them. He doesn't have as extensive a resume as some of the other names out there, even some of the AGMs that may not have even been considered. As I've said before, hopefully the Tanner Jeannot trade wasn't his idea!

Two questions though. What role does this leave for Chris Lamoriello (the guy who discovered Hudson Fasching)? And if you hand the keys to a young guy, what can really go wrong? ;)

Going from cone of silence and rare media appearances to a guy that does a podcast sit-down with some former players. :thumbu:

Here's hoping we get lots more transparency!....AND THE CUP!

That routine will get very old very quickly if the results aren’t there on the ice.

well well well

first time general manager from an organization that constantly murders the Islanders and makes a ton of savvy moves. The only flaw I got with Darche's resume is the recent play of the Lightning in the playoffs (First round exits the past two seasons), and the Jeannot trade

Reality is that we have a person who is young, and certainly can find a way to make it easier to start connecting with fans possibly. I am also curious to see how he handles this upcoming draft and offseason. Given that he knows the importance of having a guy like Victor Hedman, I do wonder if he zeroes in on taking Schaeffer 1st overall now.

So Darche and NO Shanahan? But...We'll see how things go down the line? This is getting better by the minute.

I’m hopeful on Darche. He was one I was most interested in. Let’s see what can be done.

Overall though, this was not a good process for the isles. Best they could find was an inexperienced young GM. Didnt even hire a POHO. Some big names weren’t interested. Not a great look on our ownership group. Collins certainly didn’t have the pull they were hoping for.

If those ‘big names’ weren’t interested in the Islanders, why did they interview in the first place? Seems much more likely the team wasn’t interested in them.

who would you have chosen?

I like Darche as a GM. I’m a little surprised they gave him evp as well. Seems like a lot for a first time GM. I would have liked to have seen a POHO brought in. someone like a Shanny who can bring some credibility. I would really like a big front office. I think Lou created a small world and it destroyed us. Especially given that malkin is pretty hands off. I think one of the challenges for this ownership group is that they aren’t really connected to the hockey community…

Now he needs to find a coach that knows how to get away with too many men on the ice in OT while the winning goal is scored.

No worries, just put it in reverse and things go back to how they were. 😀

Happy with the choice. Wasn't a fan of Shanahan talk. Wish Mathieu Darche nothing but the best . New blood.

Strange take. The only "big name" that turned them down was Holland by taking the Kings job. Bergevin probably had an offer to stay on with the Kings if he wasn't selected for the Isles job.
