New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

See this is where my confusion comes in. Is Lou out or still around?

Rosner: Some may say semantics, but words matter. The Islanders did not “fire” Lamoriello, per their release. They just were not renewing his contract. He is not involved in finding his replacement – that’s business COO John Collins – but is helping to “tie up loose ends.” Roy’s contract length doesn’t mean anything, since it wasn’t a one-year deal. However, it’s important to note that if Roy is back, a new staff outside of Benoit Desrosiers, who Roy brought in shortly after taking the job, is much needed. Lamoriello hired John MacLean for Lane Lambert and added Tommy Albelin last summer. If it’s Roy’s bench, he should be allowed to bring in his guys.

Lou is under contract until June 30. The Isles are not renewing his contract as he was on a series of one year deals (Rosner keeps stating he was fired btw). For the people that say Malkin is stupid, well, 4 year deal with annual reups is VERY smart and here you see it play out.

Remember how all people freak that Lou was a control freak and centralized everything? Well, Lou is around to unwind and share his information. If he gets tossed out the window immediately, then you have a gigantic hole in the organization.

Collins/Malkin will probably also have the new management team spend some time with Lou as part of the transition.

There’s nothing unusual about this situation.

Couldn't agree more. This is an executive search and succession planning, and it appears to all be running smoothly and professionally, as expected. Lou is a pro's pro and will do everything in his power to make the transition effective for whomever is replacing him. This is all good.

Holland isn’t my top choice, but if he can actually build out the organization, so it runs like…every other team except ours, I’d give it a chance. Lou and his skeleton crew mentality needs to go. Give me a robust front office and scouting group.

Agree on this. If Holland can rebuild organization, scouting, BRIDGEPORT, etc as Pres of Hockey ops, that would be okay. I am leery of him as GM. Heck, I would trust Morrow be interim GM until a fresh applicant shakes loose. I truly don't know as an announcement has to be made soon. Draft, negotiations with rfa's and 7/1 will be here soon.

The main issue with his roster construction here wasn't the moves he made, it was the moves that he couldn't make. He famously said "you can't squeeze GMs" in this league and seemed to use that as an excuse for never being able to properly address the massive holes on the Oilers team. The same issues that the team had when he took over: lack of a legit goalie, needing a top 4 RHD, poor scoring depth etc were the same issues we had when he left 5 years later. Over the course of 5 years he really only added two players to the core, Ekholm and Hyman. Everyone else (McDavid, Draisaitl, Bouchard, Nurse, Nuge etc) was already in the organization before he arrived.
Reminds me of Lou and his inability to pull off the "hockey trade" he was never able to since 2022. It set off a chain of events that leads to an unwillingness to part with players who were past their expiration dates and giving other players some awful contracts.

There’s no central registry for management and coaching contracts. They follow timelines though.

So, for the cone of silence people, the only way Lou and Roy contract info was revealed is by the team itself. That tells you Collins is working the media on all this.

Possibly, but for what point? Why leak that Lou originally had a 4 year deal and has been yaer to year since? What does that do for him, the team, the GM search?

I just don't see how leaking that moves any needle one way or the other.

It explains the non-renewal of his contract, explains his term when social media types are posting stuff that Lou is ‘still there.’

Also explains they have Roy under contract, he’ll either be the coach or a mutual termination is coming so he can look for other opportunities. Also, Mr. New GM, what do you want to do with Roy?

I’ve not been following the rumours, could anyone give me a quick breakdown about the possible candidates?

Who’s your favourite candidate? And is there anyone who might even be worse than Lou?

Thanks in advance

I don't know. You're the top executive for an NHL team that is looking for a President/GM. You can call any person in the league right now and have your call answered...Where you can explain to them directly the nature of what's going on in your franchise.

You really think that in NHL circles most executives/agents don't know what's going on already? And even if they don't you think that anyone Collins calls to interview for the Isles President/GM job is going to say, "Hi John...Thanks for calling, but not really interested in the jobs because I heard on Twitter..."

They all use and learn from the media, just like other people. They also use their own channels, of course.

I hope Staple is right. Sounds like from all the reports Isles want Gorton bad and right fully so. Just doesn’t make much sense for Gorton to make a lateral move like that.

Also, I wonder if we hire a guy already with a team if they’ll be “allowed” at the draft table. Good thing the draft is decentralized this year.

I doubt Gorton wants to leave but regardless, it’s not up to him. He has a binding contract that hasn’t expired yet.

I'm assuming the EVP of Hockey Operations with Montreal is the same job as President of Hockey operations, perhaps just a lower paid version (EVP vs. President)?
The variation is that the Islanders vacancy could also offer the GM role? Am I missing something?

He’s like the president of hockey Ops and paid like one. Forget him, he’s staying in MTL
