New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

I'm preparing myself to be disappointed. Imagine having dozens of good/young executives to interview and choose from throughout NHL circles, and you wind up going with a recycled GM who isn't even good enough to have that position right now....

Staple retweeted this below so sure sounds like he thinks it's accurate...

Fan and media talk is ‘recycled’ bc it’s not their money.

Experienced people get preference, well, bc they have experience. They are not ‘recycled.’

You are asking an owner to take a leap of faith into an inexperienced person. That rarely happens in sports, let alone real life.

Holland is an unfair case right now though. Edmonton made the Stanley Cup Finals and Holland stepped away according to reports.

If Holland has been their top choice, why isn’t it done already?

A billion reasons...

  • They're haggling over money.
  • The Sabres want him too and are offering a competitive deal.
  • He's not sure what he wants to do with his future.
  • He wants to make sure he can hire others at the same time so waiting on other "yeses."
  • Holland/the Isles are negotiating what his role would be.
  • Since he's older (69) they'd like to perhaps have a succession plan in place for GM and thus need to hire an up and coming GM with him and that takes time.
  • It's already done, but Lou is still head of PR.

What if Holland is hired as President and then hires someone like Gorton to be GM?

The concept of the question makes no sense. Gorton isn't going to leave an unbelievable job (where he's viewed as a savior right now), to go to any other position for less power and money.

And there's this...

Supposedly Lou is still involved in helping with the president GM search and is endorsing Holland. I just want a good collection of hockey minds. I’m not crazy about Holland. He’s like a lesser version of Lou without the fear and respect around the league.

If Holland is named President, which I’m hoping doesn’t happen, I do hope he brings on a younger up-and-coming GM candidate like a Darche and then hires a bunch of new scouts and modernizes I were drafting and scouting departments as well as player development departments too.

Again,. "someone like Gorton". Doesn't specifically have to be him, but a younger up-and-comer who isn't necessarily part of "the old boys club".

Also, my post was not necessarily in favor of hiring Holland, but more asking the question of those vehemently against such a hire (like yourself), if getting a younger, fresher candidate in the GM role under him makes such a hire more palatable.

Holland couldn't manage to build a team around Mcdavid and Draisaitl and can't draft to save his life. All these old corpses are experienced at is failing. I guess he's really good at pretending he's a good GM? NHL country club dumpster diving strikes again.
Jack Campbell. Enough said.

Yet the team went to Game 7 of the Cup last season.

Have all the young bucks won anything? Please enlighten.

I think Holland with Darche would be more palatable. The last thing we need is another power-starved old man who refuses to delegate. Ideally, the POHO is here to build out systems (analytics, scouting, development, fixing Bridgeport etc.), and the GM would handle personnel decisions (roster, signings, trades, drafting, coaching).

Yet Edmonton wasn't interested in bringing him back. Maybe they weren't impressed with his worthless draft record and overall body of work after he had been GMing on easy mode with McDavid and Draisaitl - he won't have those in NYI. By young bucks you are referring to age? I don't necessarily care about age (though I do think Holland is quite old), I care if the GM canditate has been the longstanding member of the NHL's dinosaur club.

People like Holland, Chiarelli or Lamoriello have proven beyond doubt they don't have what it takes to create a perennial contender in the present day NHL. The recent cup winners are all helmed by various long term executives, "young" bucks, who one day got promoted and mostly haven't been GMing for very long - I want to find someone like that, among the current 'lesser' executives, not hire a proven dinosaur.
