New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

Three most frequent candidates for GM positions around the league I keep seeing recently.

Mathieu Darche- Tampa Director of Hockey Ops/assistant GM

Ryan Bowness- Sens Assistant GM/AHL GM (was a pro scout and director of Pro scouting for the Pens)

Scott White- Dallas assistant GM/AHL GM and was previously the director of hockey operations for a few years.
Darche would certainly seem to be a candidate.

The Bowness name brings back bad memories, and he comes from OTT and PIT - not exactly teams I'm looking to emulate.

White looks like a career assistant GM.

FLA has a few guys who look like possibilities. Gregory Campbell seems to be an up-and-comer.

My guess is that they go for a multi-head monster and are very creative about things. The person with the most responsibility is more likely to be a really smart, educated person - my hunch, anyway. I wouldn't be shocked to see someone in the organization, not necessarily the head person, come from an untraditional background, maybe even from outside hockey (Collins came to hockey via the NFL, FWIW).

Ryan Bowness as in Rick’s son? He played some youth hockey on Long Island while Rick was coaching here.

I prefer multiple guys too. President of Hockey operations and a GM

Personally I want them to bring in Adam Oates to oversee everything as a special advisor. I’m sure he can help with scouting and find some under the radar guys to help this team get better. Plus he would be good for the prospect camps in evaluating talent.
I’m not opposed to that. Glue Barzal and Ritchie to him

Has anyone seen any mention of Mark Hunter? Not sure he even wants to leave London, but man did he build an amazing organization in the OHL. And if you check the records, London was amazing in the early 2010s and then had a bit of a downturn when Hunter went to the Leafs, and then they picked back up again when he returned.

If not as GM, he might be good as the top Hockey Operations/President guy.

Possible side benefit, Hunter drafted Marner to London in the OHL and then drafted him again with the Leafs. :naughty:

Yeah, let’s hire Dale’s brother after what he did in 93. That’ll surely go over well with the fanbase.

They have a machine in London. It’s a family business operation over there. I wouldn’t mind him at all but it would be hard seeing him leave London

Don;t have any specific names but preferably somebody with a background in player development and maybe somebody from a successful 'smaller' market team who don't sign big name free agents. Really am not a fan of the re-tread names

I'm looking at other teams' hockey operations structures, and I'm thinking the Isles might need to take a step back for a year just to build a quality, modern organization. Look at what FLA has (and there are some really top names in there - 4 or 5 guys under Zito who are mentioned as potential GM candidates in their own right, and the analytics guy is supposed to be a genius):

President, Hockey Operations & General Manager, Alternate Governor: Bill Zito
Assistant General Manager: Gregory Campbell
Assistant General Manager, Head of Analytics: Sunny Mehta
Assistant General Manager: Brett Peterson
Executive Assistant to General Manager: Heather Ahearn
Special Advisor to General Manager: Roberto Luongo
Senior Advisor to the General Manager: Rick Dudley
Senior Advisor to the General Manager: Paul Fenton
Senior Vice President, Hockey Operations: Paul Krepelka
Vice President, Player Engagement: Mike Huff
Director of Player Personnel: Bryan McCabe
Director of Hockey Operations & Salary Cap Management: Braden Birch
Director of Hockey Operations & Player Evaluation: Tom Bark
Manager of Player Development: Mike Ryan
European Development Coach: Tomi Maki
Senior Systems Architect: Aidan Cain
Data Engineer: Amanda Winkelmayer
Data Scientist: Bailey Janeczko
Player Engagement Intern: Sean Duffy

That's just admin and not even getting into the scouting group. I have a lot of faith in Malkin, Collins, etc. as smart, well-connected people, but there's a lot of work to be done.

Been having trouble all day logging in, so first chance to post about this. I’m really shocked they did this. Happy, but shocked. It was well past Lou’s time. Time to clean house. Need a full rebuild via the draft and free agency. Hopefully we get a GM with a good draft history.

I give Lou props though, he did some really good things, I liked some of his trades, and I liked his last trade. He just didn’t do enough and stayed with the core too long. He changed the culture though, and we made the playoffs in 5 of his 7 seasons. Did a good job overall, but it was time to move on.

He makes more coin getting paid by individual players than a team will pay him. He’d also have to shut down his business - you think a team is gonna let him work with other players when on a team payroll/contract? Hell no. He’s created a lucrative market for himself. Good for him.

He’d still be the best player maker on our roster if he laced them up today…

And this is perfectly fine. Now is the time for the Isles to be bad the next 2 years while the organization clears house and settles in with their new people. They could stockpile prospects like Mckenna and Dupont :naughty:
