Speculation: LAK GM Search

Mark Janko would be a great choice from the Stars. From what I understand he is the total package and highly responsible for the talent the Stars brought in.

Edmonton fan here:

Holland was horrible. He signed Darnell Nurse to a ridiculous, unmovable contract, he took on Duncan Keith Salary dump (and paid to do it), he emptied the prospect cupboards, and didn’t get a starting goalie in his 5 years here. He also did not hire any of the current coaching staff. The one he hired he fired. Woodcroft was a Chiarelli hire that he was willing to let walk.

He was also told by upper executives to re-sign Broberg and Holloway in around December, he failed to do that. He forgot to qualify a prospect who then became a free agent. He also failed to address the team around McDavid and Draisaitl until the last season. Every year prior- the bottom 6 during Chiarelli’s disastrous tenure had a higher GF%. Holland also had the worst team in the league from a GF% when 97/29 were not on the ice for 3/5 years.

The signing of Hyman and the trade for Ekholm were analytics based trades- that his son was the driver behind. Hyman, in particular, was pushed hard by Holland jr. He also signed Jack Campbell for 5 years at 5M/per. Kassian he gave a large contract to (which he had to trade away by adding more draft capital).

The oilers best players were from the drafts under Chiarelli. If he is hired, be prepared for poor drafting (he’ll bring on Tyler Wright), giving away draft capital like candy, over payments on contracts, getting fleeced on trades. There is a reason he was put out to pasture in Detroit and Edmonton had no interest in re-signing him. Oh- you will hear Detroit references in every interview
This right here will blow your f**king minds. Here is Detroit’s roster in 2019 after Holland was ‘promoted’ out of the GM spot when his ‘retool on the fly’ was straight up vaporware. Oh yeah, this roster was capped the f**k out and Detroit had no prospect pool whatsoever.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl ain’t walking through that door.

Luc just needs a figurehead at the position that allows him to continue to pull strings. Holland can collect some extra money, work half ass while Luc builds the team he wants without push back

Cause I don’t know why else anyone would hire a guy with such a crappy track record

Blargh... Well. Whatever. When it rains it pours... Sounds like Holland is only a matter of dollars, cents, and ink as the contract gets typed up. No surprise that Robitaille turns around and hires his former GM when he won the cup with the Wings...

I wasn't impressed with Holland's performance in Edmonton at all. I hate the old carousel of GM's and coaches in the league. If Holland is signed, a lot is going to rely on the Kings retaining their scouts and Yanetti. Despite our bickering, the Kings' issues is with development but not drafting, Holland brought his top scout with him to Edmonton and literally had one of the worst drafting streaks. Please let Yanetti make the picks...

The only bright side is the team still has some pieces, it has a decent stable of goalie prospects, which was baffling to watch Holland not address when in Edmonton, unless Holland trades them all for Skinner... He does have experience and a resume, for whatever that's worth...

Same old nepotism... Just go out and hire the GM that added you to his team and won the cup just because.

Disappointing as per usual.

Unfortunately, Luc wasn’t going to bring in a new voice in and who knows how that would have gone anyways. But, he’s going what he’s comfortable with and who he knows and as history goes, we know the result of that.
It’s a weird cycle when it comes to keep all these old ass GMs in the league who have done nothing but also have been around forever. I’ll never understand.

It so fitting Luc hires Holland - its a foregone conclusion at this point. So lets predict what happens next. Holland keeps Hiller, replaces the only capable guy he's got on hand Yanetti with his guy. Overpays Gavrikov ala Nurse. Extends Kopi. Moves Clarke and Greentree for Dobson or some such.. and runs it back for another 1st round loss.

You want to turn me into Randy Quaid from Major League? Because this is how you turn me into that guy.

Holland is starting to grow on me. The team isn't competitive now. He should at least bring some players in so we don't get pushed around on the ice. Where's the downside?

He is one of the main reasons oilers don’t have a cup. He got gifted 22/23 year McDavid and Draisaitl signed to friendly 8.5M and 12.5M dollar deals. He couldn’t build a team around them.

Also, I don’t hate the Kings. When Gretzky was traded there in 1989 and my hatred for the Oilers owner- Kings were my favourite team- so I will always hold a soft spot for them. Thank you for allowing me into your forum and giving me space to give my thoughts on Holland- from one hockey fan to another.

Thank you for your insights.

With Holland's interactions with the Edmonton media, what was his communicated identity of the team? What types of prospects would you say he showed more favor towards?

Hoven article regarding Holland fwiw. A couple key points:
- deal to be announced in the next three days (depending on paperwork issues)
- Ken Holland's son, Brad Holland (currently with Edmonton) may join him in Hockey Operations
- He's alluding to Emerson having a different role instead of Assistant GM.
- Suggests that whomever is the next Assistant GM will be groomed to take over in a longer term (hence why Emerson's role will change).

Thank you for your insights.

My pleasure.

I don’t know if he communicated any identity. I think that’s part of the reason 97/29 don’t have a cup. He hired Tippett, who was a defensive minded coach with 0 neutral zone play. He was basically forced to fire him (Tippett was over his head with the way the game is played now). In fact, he said he was willing to re-sign Tippett and let Woodcroft (whose contract was ending) walk. When Woodcroft stepped in, he play a dramatically different style from Tippett. More neutral zone transition, more attacking. Essentially, he was forced to fire his guy and go with Woodcroft who was a chiarelli hire (and upper management liked him) and coaching the farm team.

He didn’t favour any prospects. That was a huge problem. The Oilers team today has zero prospects playing from Holland’s tenure. He signs veterans (some of whom are past their due dates) in spite of bringing up prospects. It’s the main reason Broberg wanted out. Also - he overpays on contracts, when they suck - he adds prospects and picks to try to move them. Oh, he also isn’t a believer in analytics. His son pushed hard for an analytics dept, but Edmonton never built one. He is the definition of dinosaur
