Besides shot suppression, golden age Kings hallmarks were they won almost all board battles, but they also killed it in puck recovery and defensive zone breakouts. If you can't do recovery and break out of your own zone quickly, the rest of the team philosophy suffers especially the offense. The problems started happening when Mitchell, Voynov and even Greene left the team. Suddenly, you've got only Doughty, Muzzin and Martinez capable of doing that and half your defensemen handling the puck like a hand grenade and causing scrambles and extra effort just to clear your own zone. If Faber turns out to be as good at transition from defense to offense as is being touted, it's going to have a major impact than just goals and assists on his stat line. The interesting part of his interview was that he played forward and decided to switch full time to defense when he was younger. There could be some untapped potential there.

That and he’s 1 of the youngest players in the draft.

A month before the draft, FANSIDED had a story that Faber may be a King target...good read. He did play for Wroblewski a few yrs ago. Have no doubt Wro was wanting him and
influenced the staff to get him. Just more glowing reports of his skating, puck moving and elite level (in this class) of defensive play. Give this kid 2 years at U of Minnesota, and
he may be good enough to bypass Ontario, but always good for all young D, to get a yr or 2 in there. Glad Tobias stayed here last yr in Ontario. Loving this pick and the trade up,
more and more.

LA Kings: Brock Faber is high character guy team looks for

I also did not realize he is even younger than Byfield! Byfield August 19 and Faber Aug 22. Faber excelled as elite skating, shutdown D at age 17 all year with USNTDP.
At 6'0" 194, a good chance he ends up being 6'1" - 6'2" and 210. I would not worry if he's not,
he's pretty tenacious and aggressive.

I loved this pick. It is very unlikely to find a Doughty in the 2nd round but every team needs the Willie Mitchell, Matthias Norstrom types to compliment the offensive types and excel on the PK.

yes you can acquire these types in Free agency but to have home grown guys that know the system, the room, and their roles is massive.

hopefully he grows a bit more and can find a bit of offense. You can pair him with an Anderson for a nasty shit down duo or with a Clague type to help with the defensive weaknesses of an offense first partner

My, that IS nasty!

Lots of good info here: What They're Saying About Brock Faber - University of Minnesota Athletics

CBS Sports: Faber's calling card is his mobility. He possesses the pure foot speed to eventually develop into an NHL regular at some point. Offensively, Faber tends to keep things simple. He's calm and composed and rarely makes mistakes with the puck. Faber's long-term upside is limited because he doesn't project as a power-play option down the road, but his steadiness is an asset at this point of the draft. One of the youngest players in the draft, Faber will stay home and attend the University of Minnesota this fall.

The Draft Analyst: Blessed with a sturdy frame and powerful leg drive, Faber is a beast on the penalty kill or defending against opposing cycles. Again, his read-and-react timing is a positive aspect because of his quick feet, but Faber also makes smart delays under pressure and can spin away from a forechecker multiple times in one iteration. One thing that might have hurt his draft stock is his low shot totals (only 29 in 24 games) but playing a tough NCAA schedule in addition to seeing little power play time had a significant impact on Faber's ability to generate offense. It's also that he is very unselfish and focuses more on keeping plays alive than creating chances on his own. He definitely has potential for greater things of the opposing side of center ice.

Hockey Prospect: Faber is a very good skater with a fluid stride. His lateral skating and agility are put to good use in his defensive game. He plays the game on his toes and with a healthy pace. The right-handed defenseman also has a good head for the game. He doesn't put himself in trouble defensively and maintains good gaps and stick discipline. Not only does he size up rush attempts well, but he holds his own, and then some, in battles. It wouldn't be accurate to call him a physical defenseman by any stretch, but he has shown a willingness to make some good hits and hard close-offs along the boards.

There seems to be a lot to like about this kid. Its seems like he already has the size with room to grow, the defensive acumen, and the skating ability already. If he could ever add even just a little bit of offense to his game this could be a late round steal. He feels like a modern day defensive defenseman who makes good reads and uses his stick well to patrol the defensive zone and uses his size when needed to separate the man from the puck. Hell it sounds like he'd make a good pairing with Grans one day in the future.

He can move the puck, too. I think the 'lack of offensive upside' thing makes it seem like he's a total black hole with the puck but that's not really the case it seems. Think of Chris Tanev, or like Vlasic-lite. They don't do a lot of scoring but they don't just let the air out of the play after a good stop.

Yeah, he might not be a powerplay specialist, but he seems to have a good transition game. But who knows because a lot of experts have been saying that he hasn’t been given much powerplay time to excel in and has consistently taken the toughest defensive assignments.

I love me some defensive defensemen, too.

I hope he keeps it whenever he eventually turns pro.

lol so funny. His strong hair game is exactly what i think every time i see him. My sister-in-law is going to be a big fan of his if/when he makes it.

Faber looked pretty good tonight. He was partnered with Ryan Johnson. Although he did show that he could carry the puck out of the zone and also into the attacking zone, Ryan Johnson's pretty much the designated puck carrier in that partnership, at least tonight he was. Good positioning, skating obviously an asset. Generally made good first passes. Very steady is how I would describe him tonight.

Did they win? Lose?
