The Reign have 7 games left in this month, so that's a decent amount of time for Byfield and Kaliyev in SoCal. But I'm firm in the belief that once the OHL wants them back, the Kings should put them on the taxi squad and exhaust those 7 games. 6 left for Kaliyev I think.

This is actually lining up really well for us. If the OHL season does resume in April, call up Byfield and Kaliyev. If they show they can stick in the NHL, keep them up. If not, send them back to juniors to continue playing more hockey. Given how much experience they'll be getting in the AHL and NHL until then, I have no problems whatsoever sending them back to junior to get more reps in. Kaliyev will be able to play in the AHL next year anyway, so it's not some huge hit, and hopefully Byfield will be able to jump into the NHL too.

Yeah, at least they've gotten some prime time in with the organization. Although it would make sense to make a provision for this year to NOT mandate that these guys have to go back to the OHL. At some point the NHL and NHLPA are going to need to change this rule to do right by both the players AND the NHL clubs. The average salary in junior is like 500/week. The CHL has an inordinate amount of power over these kids' lives - all this back and forth and quarantining for them isn't right either.

No way they burn that ELC year but I'd fully expect them to get the seven games. Even if they show they can stick, they will go back to juniors before burning that year off the contract.

Pretty sure they could come back for the AHL playoffs if the Reign get that far.

Really wish that the OHL would relax the rules regarding where guys can play this season. They are going to toss together a 24 game season with no fans which is really being done for the kids that will never be pros along with draft eligible guys. The former are like high school kids here who missed out on their senior year of football. So it is cool that they will have some sort of season but this type of season should not require guys like Byfield, Kaliyev, Drysdale et al to have to go back and take part in it.

Just thinking out loud here, but theoretically a club could -

- conveniently call a player up the day before the OHL quarantine is supposed to end
- play them a few games
- send them to OHL, 2 week quarantine
- recall them the day the quarantine ends
- exhaust games before using an ELC year
- send them back, another 2 week quarantine

An NHL club could theoretically tie up 7-8 weeks of the OHL season. At ~3 games a week, that's whole regular season.

Now this is ridiculous and I'm not suggesting any club do it. But could a club 'threaten' to do it in hopes that the OHL club would release or waiver an OHL player to stay in AHL?

I may be wrong about this but I don't think you can "hide" guys on the taxi squad. My understanding was that the taxi squad, for official business purposes, is more of an extension of the AHL roster not of the NHL roster. Players on the taxi squad get paid their AHL salary, for two way contracts, and have to clear waivers, or be waivers exempt, to be added to or activated from the taxi squad.

Adding Kaliyev/Byfield to the active roster and then shuffling players around them from the taxi sqaud and active roster might be hypothetically possible but once Lizotte, Athanasiou and Frk become available it starts to get dicey with available spots on the active roster and a limited number of waivers exempt players.

I could be wrong about all this (desperately trying to find the rules) but I don't think I am...

I was going to say in my last post that I don't think the taxi squad is an option for the OHL guys. You'd have to move them off the taxi to the regular roster in the event guys get hurt/COVID'd or, I guess, call up a guy from the AHL directly to the NHL roster but my assumption is that there would be waiver problems.

I think the best they could do is carry them as healthy scratches if they wanted them to just stay in LA and practice with the team. I'd hope they get a little more NHL action but I'm resigned to the fact that they will probably be skating in the OHL at some point.

Yup, CHL players are not allowed on Taxi squad once CHL teams get going

And you’re gonna do this torturous clusterf*** to a couple guys that we all hope will be the cornerstone of the franchise for the next 15 years ... for what again? Their development? Locked up
In a room for a month?

but I do get the clever device you gone done there.

Once a player is assigned to the OHL (which putting him in quarantine would effectively do), you can't call them back up. So once the OHL season starts, Byfield HAS to go to the OHL until season's end OR stay in the NHL until he's assigned.

This is my understanding as well. The taxi squad is an AHL extension, so Byfield could not be hidden there

If the OHL starts up, you call up Byfield and Kaliyev and you send down JAD and Luff. You play them seven games. Then you send them to their OHL teams. That's the whole plan. Nothing else needed.

Definitely not! I specifically called it ridiculous for just that reason. It's irrelevant since you cannot recall from the OHL after returning them anyway.

It was just a silly thought exercise in hoping that there would be some way of Byfield & Kaliyev staying in the AHL instead of going back to the OHL because I think the AHL play would be better for their development.

Might be splitting hairs here, but I think it's the other way around, it's an extension of the NHL roster for a couple of reasons. Anyone on the taxi squad has to have an NHL contract, anyone on the taxi squad cannot participate in any AHL activities, including practice with the AHL club while they are on the taxi squad. They can and do practice with the NHL club when they are on the taxi squad. And of course the reason for the taxi squad is that players can be called up at a moments notice and be ready to join the NHL club in case of a C-19 issue, which is one of the reasons the Kings taxi squad always jumps to 6 players on the road, and is only 4 deep at home. In a nutshell, while the taxi squad interacts with both leagues, it's sole purpose is to support the NHL club. It does nothing for the AHL club, it hurts their team depth immensely.

You still have to pass waivers to go to the taxi squad, so for all intents and purposes, it is more of an AHL extension than an NHL extension

I look at it as a mandatory healthy scratch pool that teams don't have to pay NHL salary and doesn't count against cap. That's it. As for eligibility, AHL rules apply, so technically a travelling AHL squad.

It's part of the NHL roster for purposes of "Active roster" availability. They travel with and practice with the team. They get an NHL per diem.

On paper however, they are part of the AHL team. They get paid AHL contracts, they count against the cap based on AHL status and they have to clear waivers.

No I think Byfield needs more time in Ontario if not Sudbury. He needs to learn and grow there. I'm not too keen on destroying a player's development by rushing them into the league. He needs time.

The later in the season they can delay Byfield's 6 game NHL stint the better.
Letting him get a taste of NHL playstyle without having to "be the man " will only do him good development wise . ( and a 6 game NHL salary will be appreciated ).
