As the favorite to go first overall in 2020, I don't think I saw him on the ice once the whole tournament. I know 17 year olds arent usually allowed to play much of a role in these tournaments but it seems like Alexis Lafreniere was completely buried ice-time wise, did he even get 5-minutes per game? Would anyone have a link to tournament ice times? I feel like he probably could have been a difference maker if given the chance.

In the end it's a good thing. He won't have too wear too much of a stain from being on Captain Dive's team.:sarcasm:

People get too crazy over underagers' stats. The age difference is very real at that age. McDavid wasn't exactly overwhelming as a double underager at WJC. As for minutes I don't think Canada was well coached in any area to begin with.

I didn't expect much from him to begin with. +- 4 pts. He'll be better next year playing in a role more suited to his skillset. Canadian coaches/Hockey Canada generally do not put these 16 and 17 year old wunderkinds in a position to succeed.

I'm expecting a tournament dominant player next year. Hockey Canada needs to atone for this debacle. A Canadian team not even medaling at home...not even playing for a medal.

These types of tournaments would be good medicine every now and then if only Hockey Canada would learn from it. They don't often do learn.

I noticed him a few times making nice offensive plays, a couple of nice neutral zone plays, and a few nice big hits. The talent is there for sure.

Still you are 17. There is like 1 month diffenrence to be in this years draft year

Lafreniere was 16 a mere 2 months ago, Laine was a few months away from being 18. And no to answer the OP, I don't remember him getting any significant ice time during any of the games I watched.

Why Lafreniere is so hyped? Lundell is also born in October 01 and has been fairly better in this tournament. Lafreniere shouldn't be consensus 1st player. Lundell outplayed him twice in these games.

No he shouldn’t, Lucas Raymond should ;)

Okey i checked Laine was 6 months older than Lafreniere in this time.

Btw. Also Matthews is 5 months older than Laine. Still counts eh

Well now we know why Matthews is so much better.

No, but seriously what's your point? I've heard this argument a million times during their draft year. Unfortunately for Finnish fans it's become a bit of a moot point now that both players are in their third full Season in the league. One player is drastically improving, the other still can't skate.

Funniest thing was the coach calling him out for a lack of effort because he was floating during a 14-0 win.

It's true, Lundell has been more impressive in this tournament. But he's not a NA player.

Your first mistake is using a 5 game sample size when evaluating players.

Why is this a contest of ”who can do it as youngest”

It's not.. it's more of a physical development conversation in a 19 year old dominated tournament. The physical maturity of a 16-17 can be a lot different than a 19 year old.. now this isn't the case every single time. But is it a factor? Sure. One of many - but this is why historically speaking in the canadian junior league 19 year olds destroy the stat sheet in their last year.

Finland proved to be stronger squad than Canada so Lundell getting ice time is more impressive than Lafreniere not getting it. Make for an interesting race for 2020 1st overall for sure.

I forget which sport I was watching, but the announcer said something I kind of like: "If you're good enough, you're old enough."

Young or not, a guy who is cleaning up in the CHL at any age, would seem to be good enough, barring other factors.
