Why is this a contest of ”who can do it as youngest”

Real super-talents have to score their points in the WJC before they're 18 years and 4 months old. After that they don't get to participate.

Tells you how unreliable this tournament can be! Laine and Pulju, both being now dusted by players from that same age group.

The top three on that list became decent NHLers though. And the Canadian who's #2 scored those 17 points of his as a 16-year-old. When he was 17, he didn't get to go to the WJC cause he was already playing professional hockey.

I forget which sport I was watching, but the announcer said something I kind of like: "If you're good enough, you're old enough."

American pro leagues don't see it like this though. That's why Auston Matthews had to go play in Switzerland for a year. I'm pretty sure Alexis Lafrenière would be easily good enough to play in the NHL in October 2019 too, but he won't be there.

I agree. Obviously there needs to be a certain cut off if you're going to have a draft. I was quite disappointed that John Tavares, DOB 9/20/90, had to wait until 2009 to be in the draft, even though had his mother given birth 5 days earlier he would have been possibly drafted ahead of Stamkos. Never understood why Jan 1 is fine for age groups, school, etc., but when it comes time to make money...

Lafreniere will be just fine spending another year in Junior. It will do him a world of good. And he'll have a monster World Juniors next year.

I'm not sure why fans are so invested in getting juniors to the pros as quickly as possible. do fans get a commission on the players paycheck?

He gets there when he gets there.

I don't think OP's question got answered:

Lafrenière's ice time was
Denmark - 14:14
Switzerland - 6:49
Czech Rep - 7:42
Russia - 7:18
Finland - 5:15

Veleno and Entwistle suffered from similar treatment.

I don't get one red cent. But if people are paying good money to see him perform, and he could get hurt in such a way as to reduce his compensation for such performances, I prefer to see him get paid. Strike while the iron's hot.

Joey Hishon, drafted 17th overall and then get concussed in the Memorial Cup and barely played professionally because of it says hello.
