Kings needed a scorer after 2014. The list of free agents were terrible. Vanek, Iginla, Michalek, Cammalleri, Grabovski, Jussi Jokinen, Moulson, Raymond, Ribiero. Gaborik was signed for way too long but I guess that's what kept the cap hit lower. I'd rather they just signed him for $5 million for 5 years or something.

yup kings gave up term for lower hit. will hurt at somepoint just hope it is not this year and he can rebound.

Agree with BK, Gaborik re-signing was absolutely the right move at the time. Not buying out Richards was the main mistake. And you canèt account for something like the Voynov fiasco happening shortly after.

I distinctly remember voicing the opinion that I didn't care what kind of mess we would have in the future if it meant winning a Stanley Cup, let alone two. I know I wasn't alone in that either.

We just all expected the mess to begin in the late 2010s and not 2015 haha.

Gaborik signing doesn't fall under that category, not for me anyways.

Gaborik was amazing after the trade and they don't win in '14 without him. DL pretty much brought the same team back and felt that Gaborik would be good enough for probably at least three seasons while this team was still firmly in its window (Voynov still here along with all 1st round picks). Had to do seven years to make the cap work.

Let's not forget that these *******s wasted a 27 goal season from Gaborik in 2015. I think he would of potted 20--or close to it--if not for the knee injury last season. He's been bad so far this year yet looked awesome at the WC prior to the broken foot. I'm still holding out hope he will round into form sooner rather than later.

Anyways, DL was Gaborik's GM for all of four months or so prior to the extension so I don't think it was a "loyalty" move like Richards obviously was.

Fair enough. I'm probably being too critical there.

There were those around the league that were saying they should let him walk even as he was helping deliver the '14 Cup.

It wasn't a slam dunk due to his age/history, but it made total sense based on what he meant for the team once acquired.

Richards, however, had already fallen off a cliff v. his cap hit and he was signed through eternity. That's the loyalty mistake that DL made. Greene can be argued as can Brown, although I don't look at the latter as a "loyalty" contract either.

The sad part about the Gabby signing was that numerous sources were saying the night before he was on the verge of signing a 3 year deal worth more money. Instead, Lombardi went with longer term. Horrible. If Gaborik was only on a 3 year deal even at 7 million it would be his last year. Instead, he signs him for 7 years so Gab's is 37 when the deal is over?

The only good news is the cap hit is 4.8 and the last two years are at 3 real money.

Who would they have lost though to sign him at $7 million? No way they could've fit that contract in.

Can't forget that idiot Voynov getting suspended too (although we all try to forget him). He plays all of 2014-15 and they likely make the playoffs and who knows how different the team is now.

As cool as it would be to add a Landeskog, I'm also sick of seeing this team trading its future away.

Too bad the team's drafting and scouting has been so bad they can't identify any top six talent since the selection of Pearson, and the only top six forward they ever found outside of the first round is Toffoli.

The Kings and their development system has only been good at grooming dmen and grinders.

Can you imagine how bad it would be if the Kings choked in the finals and didn't win a cup?

One what if scenario that's interesting to think about is had the Kings gone out in 4 or 5 games in 2014, the way they did in 2016. We've seen Lombardi let guys walk after not winning the Cup. If they don't come back from 0-3, he probably lets Gaborik go, gets rid of Richards, lets Greene walk, and Mitchell still probably leaves as well.

Then in 14-15, taking out the Voynov stuff, does Lombardi believe in the team enough to go the extra mile for Sekera, or someone else? The Kings wouldn't have been the cockroaches. Then there's no pressure to get Lucic after that.

There's 5 things that have shaped how things have unfolded, and will continue to unfold for at least a few more years. Brown, Richards, Voynov, the crazy run they had in 2014, and Lombardi's emotional loyalty.

My thoughts on Landeskog...if you're thinking Martinez goes, why would the rebuilding Avs want a 29-year-old defenseman? And could LA even afford to give him up?

Landeskog to La La Land?

Media and fans can continue to speculate on AMart or Muzzin but that's not what the Avs are looking for.

They want a top 'young' defenseman as part of the package. A lot of teams are calling them and they can afford to sit back and keep takin' calls until the Draft in June if they want. Or if that team wants him bad enough, they cough up the asking price.

The Bruins are pushing the hardest, Avs wanted Carlo and they turned them down. If they are smart, they will turn the request for Charlie McAvoy as well if that subject comes up. Bruins have 8 young defensemen in their farm system in college and juniors and could include one of them, with a roster player and draft pick.

If DL really wants a LW, I get why a player such as Landy, a young, top , non rental with good paper would be attractive. Maybe that's a good sign...just have to find one that fits , given the CAP and expansion draft.

Muzzin is not old for a d-man. Defense still take longer to develop and he is only 27, so should be in his prime. If Colorado ownership is mandating their team be competitive right away I think he fits perfectly. I don't know how much draft picks and prospects help the avs if this is mandate.

I just don't think they are going scorched earth but are instead going to try and alter, and then get a big ticket FA this summer (they have plenty of cap space next year).

This right here is the question. There are other pieces that the Kings should have interest in on the Avs, depending on how much they want to blow it up. RHD, Centers. Kings could use a top 6 wing, but picking up a center and sliding Carter over to wing opens a lot of flexibility down the line.

What if it's Brown + Forbort for Landeskog (other stuff to balance)... Avs get their young-ish D with lots of upside and Brown offsets the contract difference between Forbort and Landeskog

Why would they want Brown? Theyd trade Landeskog for players they want surely.

They would want Forbort. What's Forbort making $900K? Landeskog is around $5.57 or something? Kings would have to send Brown or Gaborik back to even out the cap hit to make it work.

With Iggy moving on maybe the Avs want another over the hill/not producing guy to replace him?

Everyone assumes it's Martinez or Muzzin that could be traded. Yet the Avs want a young defenseman. Maybe they're looking at Forbort.
