It's been less than a year since the Ottawa Senators lost a first round pick because they tried to hide a NTC from a team. I think it'll take some time before that gets beat.
The Sens also had an ownership change and cleaned house with management since the NTC issue. The league handed the penalty after, which the new group inherited.

Just a few years ago arguably the top-ranked prospect system in the league.

Kupari, Turcotte, Byfield, Bjornfort, Vilardi, Kaliyev, Madden, Durzi, Fagemo, Andersson, Grans, Thomas, Faber, Chromiak, Spence, Clarke ... Still time on a few of them and Byfield broke out this year but wow, what a disastrous development system.

As for the trades & signings because Blake was tired of waiting for the young 'uns to develop? They're still waiting to win their first playoff series since 2014.

At least Blake recognized (about a year too late) what a disaster PLD was and cleaned up his mess. Not much to praise there but he did the best thing for the team regardless of how bad it made the initial trade look for him.

I guess with dumpoing PLD the Kings can lock up Byfield for 8 years at 8.5 Million...and if they do that it'll piss a lot of players too...I wonder what numbnuts has up his sleeve...can the Kings trade Blake back to the Avalanche for Miller and Deadmarsh even if they are Old men now

Laine!!!!!

Maybe a change of scenery for Panarin?

Is Chychrun available?
Chychrun for LA first in 2024 and 2025 while the Sens kick in a 7th rounder and one of their young netminders

Too bad numbnuts Blake didn't see the best developmental model for at least half those players was leaving them the f*** alone and letting them develop in Europe and not fighting for jobs, ice time with the other prospects in Ontario pure Genius that Blake must not have really done much in the way of the schooling going to Bowling Green ...what a turd

It was a sunk cost. They cut their losses. Take the L with the PLD trade and reset, that’s what they did

Would be much worse to have 7 more years at that AAV for an underperforming player

That's the thing, everyone's like 'you should be glad he undid the PLD trade" but how many resets do you get?
He inherited a championship infrastructure, future hall of famers, carte blanche to do whatever he needed, and endless AEG resources/finances to win not even a round since 2014. He got a reset after Kovalchuk--a total self own when the grabbed Ilya, put him on the 3rw and in front of the net on the PP. He got a reset after Petersen. He now gets a reset after PLD? How many times do you get to shoot yourself in the dick?

I've posted this in a couple of places today but it bears repeating here...here's the PLD trade tree

Outgoing
Vilardi
Iafallo
Kupari
MTL 2nd
Durzi
Walker
Grans
Petersen
LA 2nd
PLD

Incoming
2 million+ of Provorov's salary
Hayden Hodgson
Kevin Connauton
Kuemper.

The really fun full circle part?

They waived Kuemper to start the above cycle with Petersen.

Your total haul for trading the equivalent of 3 1sts, 5 2nds, a 3rd, and a couple of good college FAs equivalent to 1st/2nds and all you have to show for it is 2 million of someone else's player, two minor leaguers, and the goalie you started the trade cycle with. Oh, and you're over the cap, have bonus overages, have precious few picks, prospects left, and haven't won a playoff round in 10 years. HOW DO YOU GET TO KEEP THAT JOB?

There's a chance Kuemper just had a bad year last year. The Capitals team was bad and slow.

Blake could be in the running for GM of the year if he has a bounce back.
Yet the capitals made the playoffs with another goalie.....

The better view is to hope that LA's system plays better to Kuemper's strengths. The system / goalie match is always more important than the goalie's raw skill

They gambled on finding a future cheap 1c and instead of stepping towards that role the player turned into a ghost. Maybe Blake believed PLD was underachieving cuz Winnipeg and found out beach weather wasn't the cure. I'm actually impressed the Kings were able to address an ugly problem while getting an overpriced backup goalie out of the deal. As an Oilers fan it kind of sucks to see them back in the market for pieces to improve their team.

Yes he entered the year as Caps1st goalie, but lost his job to a way better Lindgren. Still you never know with goalies. Just the year before Kuemper was better than Lindgren.

and to my point, this year the caps had a new coach and thus a new system.

They just traded PLD for the decomposing corpse of Darcy Kuemper, a goalie way past his prime. Basically, they gave away PLD for (almost) free as Washington was more than happy to get out of that albatross contract, and this comes after shipping out Vilardi, Iafallo , Kupari and a 2nd for Dubois just a year ago, and then giving him a huge 8-year extension at $8.5M.

The issue here is that almost everyone on these boards could have told you when the trade was done just how much of a collosal disaster giving out a long-term deal to the always malcontent PLD was, but somehow Blake and the rest of the Kings front office didn't see it. Complete disaster.

They also extended Todd McLellan just a few months before finally firing him, another mega-puzzling move. You have to think that there is something seriously wrong behind the scenes for the Kings moves to look this bi-polar. Another disaster, and they should have parted ways with Todd long, long ago.

But worst yet, they just recently extended their management group! So basically Blake and co were allowed to pay a premium to make these disastrous move and then everyone is acting as if nothing happened. It looks like there is absolutely no accountability at the management level whatsoever.

Are the LA Kings the worst run franchise in the league?
"after shipping out Vilardi, Iafallo , Kupari and a 2nd for Dubois"

Sunk cost fallacy. This does NOT matter at ALL for THIS trade.

Here's a reference for you:

In 2019Leafs traded Marleau to Canes so that Canes could buy him out, for a first-round pick. He had a 6.25mil AAV.

So, 6.25mil is worth about a first. And Marleau wasn't even a negative value player. He scored 37 points that year. Dubois scored 40 points this year, by the way.

Understand the implications here? If not, here goes:

The difference in money is 43.75mil This divided by 6.25mil(that Marleau was making) is 7.

Meaning, the negative value of the contract is 7 first-round picks, potentially. Even if you assume Dubois is better than this somewhat, the contract will still likely be some 5 first-round picks in the negative.

Would you make this trade:

You give up future considerations.
You receive Kuemper and 5 first-round picks.

You would.

In short, you don't understand cap, and you don't understand sunk cost fallacy.

As for the rest, keep in mind that Kings overachieved this season. No one predicted them to do as well as they did. They made the playoffs against expectations.
