Speculation: LA Kings Offseason Thread

Grundstrom would be perfect if he had a mean streak. Dude has nothing Norse in him. He plays like he’s French.
You have to take into account the Kings system also. They fall into the 1-3-1 way too much compared to teams that forecheck relentlessly. Grundstrom would most likely be better on an aggressive team that allowed him to play to his strength rather than have him take penalties sitting back in the neutral zone.

So Blake’s first offseason move is to extend Sturm. Curious choice to lock up the AHL coach ahead of any negotiations with Todd.

Not a good sign, that they will do 'the right things' . Sturm seems just so very uninspiring and not-so- inspirational. The Kings need an overhaul in the minor leagues / development. Sturm just doesn't seem like one that is going to push players and have them playing like they will go through a wall.

This whole "I'd like to bring this exact team back", is a problem. There's a lot to like about this team, but some changes must be made. And, if they are penciling Clarke in the AHL and have Arty as fighting for a spot on line 4.....then it's time to change the front office.

They have seen what a legit, top 4 LHD can do. If they think Gavrikov can be replaced with some vet that may have some game, (see Maatta, Edler) they will find out the hard way...and may go back to black hole.

Juice has the Viking spirit. i think if it ever came out fully - he'd pull limbs off guys. Sadly I dont see that in Gründström either.

There's an emerging pattern with Grundstrom.

When he first gets into the lineup he's buzzing, scores a few goals. Then he fades and becomes useless. Eventually gets benched/injured. Then the cycle starts over again when eventually makes his way back into the lineup.

I think 3-6 of those skaters are in another organization by October and Petersen will likely be in Ontario all year.
Walker, Iafallo, Elder, and MacEwen are out due to cap reasons for sure. Peterson would've been on my list, but too many years left on that contract and cap.

So, considering that Blake NEEDS to win next year, do the Maple Leafs make a partner if they get swept?

Do the Kings go after Marner? It's not an insane idea for the Kings if they're only concerned with the next year or two. They'd need to clear cap space and provide a good reason for the Leafs to do it.

What's the ask? Roy ($3.1m), Arvidsson ($4.25m), next years 1st? More? Durzi instead of Roy? I'm not sure if it makes sense for the Leafs, but they might sour on someone if they can't do anything again.

He's got a $10 million a year cap hit and he's a UFA year after next. I could actually see them trying to do something like this because of how desperate they'd be to save their jobs. Not sure if it does, but they seem like a crew who would risk it.
I doubt Blake is on the hot seat with ownership. Todd on the other hand I could see him gone if Kings can't win a playoff series next year for sure. I don't see Blake trading for Marner due to asking cost and cap.

Bro the fact Blake even says that they expect Cal back in the NHL when he doesn’t even belong in the ECHL is crazy to me. That’s how I know Blake is hitting them bath salts pretty hard.
Thinking he can say anything else shows you’re the one hitting them .

He can’t bury him publicly, especially if he wants to move him. He may also need him if he can’t sign anyone or in case of injury. Saying anything other than he did would have been dumb.

Chicago has a lot of cap space and won’t be competitive for a bit. Maybe they can add Spence to Peterson to try to move cap. Spence can bond and work with the youth Chicago has. I must state I don’t want Spence traded, he’s been my guy since he got drafted, but I just don’t see a place for him anymore. Organization loves Durzi for some dumbass reason.

F That! I'm not trying to help Chicago be a dynasty in 3 years. If the Kings choose Durzi over Spence I will hire ninjas to do things.

He's probably worth about 4.5M

In free agency, it's the team that's willing to pay above a player's worth that lands him.

The Kings could do something crazy and offer an 8 year deal. No other team could do that. Could also structure it to get the cap hit down.

If all it took was $4M/season to re-sign Gavrikov then he'd be signed :P I would honestly be surprised if he signed before free agency. I think he is going to make good on his statement that he intends to see all the offers first. I have a feeling when the bidding is done he will be between $5.5M - $6.5M. He does not strike me as someone that is looking to leave money on the table to win a cup.

Cap estimates. Something to keep in mind.

2023-24: $83.5 million (projected)
2024-25: $87.5 - $88 million (projected)
2025-26: approximately $92 million (projected)

I would keep an eye on the Maple Leafs. If they get bounced in 4, we may want to see what they are willing to part ways with.

I am definitely for making some trades, but I don't know if there is anyone I really want from the Leafs. All of their forwards have very high cap hits unless you were to deal Kopitar or something. I mean if you were that interested, I think you could just wait for Kopitar's deal to expire and sign Matthews in the offseason without losing assets. But overall, I don't think there is anyone on that roster we particularly need or would come close to working financially, not to mention be willing to throw significant assets at.

It might be a good deal to dump players for futures though if they are interested in Iafallo or if Blake wants to move away from Kopitar or Doughty though... I doubt it comes to that, at least for Kopitar or Doughty, but they are a team that would likely pull the trigger.

If it was a lose lose situation, it would have been better to have lost and keeping the first.

Copley's win rate def dipped but I think the Kings would have still made the playoffs without the need for Korpisalo. Back in February, when they had 25 games left, Copley's win rate had cooled off a bit (85% to 81%) but Quick had improved ever so slightly (up to 50%). The two could have split the remaining games evenly (13 for Copley, 12 for Quick) and the Kings would have had ~100 pts.
Well i don;t have as much faith as you Copley needed a rest He is a good 1b goalie but shouldnt be getting as many starts as he did So ill kindly agree to disagree on this point

I just think the coaching pool is too much of an aristocracy.. need more fresh blood more often instead of these retreads with same old systems. Not sure how to make that happen, but to me its a problem w the league.
