I'm not sure I understand the question. Players are added to playoff caliber teams all the time at this point in the season, it 'works' all the time. Not that I'd want Toffoli, cause I don't, but roster wise it'd be manageable this season.

There's always a way to "make it work" but as I see it... you'd be adding a winger that's playing 17+ minutes to a team with

Kempe, Iafallo, Arvidsson all with more goals than Toffoli
Moore that just connected with Danault and Arvidsson
Athanasiou is UFA at the end of the year I can't imagine why trading him to Montreal makes any sense
Brown is Dustin freaking Brown
Kaliyev and Lemieux have combined with Lizotte for an effective fourth line

So... who's coming out of the lineup to give Toffoli those minutes? The "easy" "answer" I suppose is Athanasiou but then there's the fact that Toffoli is almost 30 and is signed for two more seasons which would be yet another body complicating the development process.

It doesn't feel like a Rob Blake move to me frankly and I don't think it makes any sense at all.

If we were to add a Toffoli, I'm looking at for use on the powerplay, and given how we are near the bottom of the league there, anyone pretty much can come off the PP for Toffoli. Give Toffoli three minutes a night on the PP and the 13-15 a night we're using on AA lately.

We don't have to trade AA to Montreal to make it work, we can simply trade him elsewhere or waive him, but if it meant making a deal work cap wise, I'm sure Montreal would take him on or flip him in a three way.

Now the latter pat of your post is the real problem and the one I think (thankfully) rules us out of a Toffoli deal; the cap issue. We would have the cap room to keep him, but it would take us out of the hunt for better fish in the off-season, like a Forsberg or maybe a RFA that someone may not want to resign, like Laine possibly. LA lacks a finisher like what we had in Carter and Gaborik and Toffoli just isn't that guy, at least not when he was in a Kings uniform.

I agree, it doesn't make sense for us long-term.

Love Toffoli, but I don't think there's really any need for a reunion

Agreed. We need the scoring, but I'd rather focus on packaging prospects and picks for a stud LD. Without one, we're not going anywhere. After that, a forward (or two) would be nice, but we really need some high-end scoring talent. We're not gonna compete with the Tampas and Colorados of the world with Kempe, Arvy, Iafallo, and Moore (and even Toffoli) leading the charge at wing, as solid as those guys are. Maybe Arty could be that guy in the future.

In any case, I don't see Toff as a fit right now.

Toffoli was a player who got too comfortable being a King. I'll give him credit for playing some of his best hockey the season he was dealt, but there's no reason to revisit him. The Kings need a play driver in their top six, like what they added to the roster when they acquired Jeff Carter. They don't need another perimeter winger.

There are a couple players on the Habs I really like and would want on the Kings, like Anderson and Gallagher. But then I look at their contracts and it’s an absolute horror show. And then it gets even more frightening because the guy that gave those out is now in our front office!

A half retained Gallagher or Anderson is much better, and I can't see the new GM moving many big contracts without retaining some cap hit in deals. The one I'm most interested in though is Romanov. I'd take a gamble to see if he's a bust or not.

No thanks to Toffoli. Too inconsistent year to year. One year he's money the next a dud.
I wouldn't mind Toffoli back. He'd be a good Brown replacement next year. The problem is the slots & cap are filling up. Kings have space now, but if they add a vet D 3-4 AAV & go for a Gaborik, Carter like shot up front, the space goes away quickly. Adding 4-5M forward would likely prevent going for a bigger name.

The Zacha rumor a few days ago makes sense in that his AAV is low, under 3. He is an RFA signed for short term whose numbers seem to have popped up a little in the last 2 years. Good buy low that adds depth. Could be a fallback solution if Vilardi is called up & doesn't quite cut it.

Zacha doesn’t move the needle. In all honesty, I’d rather they call up Vilardi if they need a winger.

Looks like he's most dangerous mucking it up below the dots. Zacha has been seeing a slight uptick in points last few years, which are still low considering his PP time. Could work well with King's forechecking style since Zacha is dangerous in close. Wouldn't be opposed to taking a flyer on him if Blake can get him for less than a 2nd or stalled prospect.

Wonder if we are going to see Vilardi before the trade deadline, or if they're just going to let him tear up the AHL & hopefully do AHL playoffs.

Obviously, we all love Toffoli here and what he did as a King, but there's no reason to bring him back. Maybe if we become a contender and he wants to join back up for a season or two on the tail end of his career in a handful of years and we have an open roster spot... Unlikely. Arvidsson is Toffoli's replacement. He is one year younger, they are both signed for the same price at the same term. Toffoli has 9G 26P this season and Arvy has 13G 29P and we got Tyler Madden out of it, who probably deserves a cup of coffee sooner rather than later. We all have our problems here and there with Blake, but it is hard to knock him on asset management overall since he has taken the reins.

Why are we talking about adding forwards when we need D more than anything else.
Edler may return?
MTL asking way too much for Chiarot.
AZ asking way too much for Chychrun.
Soucy out of Seattle might be ok.

Are there any exciting options out there?

No bringing back players from the cup teams. The roster needs talent AND desire. Players willing the dive for those block shots and win the board battles in the playoffs. Not previous winners whose desire might be less than 100.

I remember reading an article on Lucic that he honestly said it was difficult to get the hunger to win back after winning a cup.

We lack a dominant top 6 and have a terrible PP so we need to get scoring and production from all the lines to have a chance to do anything this season. And we have gaping holes on a line that is going to be expected to contribute down the stretch.

The Kings have a Top 8 defense in GA per game and are 20th in GF per game, not sure defense is that much more of a need than a scorer.
