Kings Article: LA Kings Director of Amateur Scouting Mark Yannetti on the 2023 NHL Draft: “We’ve Got to Get a Little Creative”

I think you can interpret the quote as including last year and this year since they traded those 1st round picks. You find a Dwight King but he isn't making an impact until 2012...that is five years after being drafted. Simmonds was a valuable player for the Kings starting in his D+2 so that is a quicker turnaround but Anderson wasn't a regular until his D + 4 season.

Point being that if they want to "find guys" like the ones he quoted, they better have already drafted some of them if you want to see a contribution anytime soon. Any of these 2nd round picks and later would fit the bill since he mentioned Simmonds. I'd say Fagemo, Spence, Simontaival, Chromiak, Pinelli, Helenius, Kirsanov, and Laferriere fit the bill. None of them have done much at the NHL level--if anything--and they all fit in the 2nd to 5th round range. We've been waiting for Spence to happen and if he finally does, he becomes "one of those guys" since he is a 4th round pick in his D + 5 next season.

As for that stat about the Kings drafting the second most NHL players since 2005 and all the games played, it really helps to toss Kopitar/Quick/Simmonds/Martinez/Doughty/Clifford/Schenn/Toffoli in to that equation. All DL era picks and all 2010 or earlier that are still playing in the NHL today, or at least last season. That is a lot of games.

Even with so many holdovers from DL's scouting staff, that stat means very little to me when it comes to Blake and especially Yanetti when you factor in the Futa factor. This is a "what have you done for me lately" business and business has not been great.

The most Blake thing ever would be to engineer a trade into the late 1st

And then use that pick to draft a 5'10" C
A hard-working, character 5'10 C to you
With a “developing offensive game”
"Needs to work on skating" "High motor" "Competes every day in practice".
I have a feeling my upcoming article may upset a few.

Granted, there are 20 players listed there, and more depth will be provided once actual picks are made, but you're going to see some common warts among some of them.

It’s truly amazing that we hear way more from Yanetti in the offseason than Luc, Blake, McLellan, Kopitar and Doughty combined.

At least we know he’s working, so I wouldn’t look to fire him first.

Definitely making the rounds to say a lot of nothing.

Last year he ripped Ottawa’s process and back tracked a bit now that Stutzle racked up 90 points.

But Kings need their 7 seven year plans. Or just draft the better players maybe.

Sure, but if we heard from Nelson Emerson, I doubt we’d get any honest thoughts in 30 minutes of conversation. And we heard what Glenn Murray thinks, but nothing about successes or mistakes. Because neither him or Emmer have done anything of note while cashing checks from the team.

What I really like about Yannetti is, while he does tow the company line as far as front-facing for the customers, he has genuine reflection on end results, the process, and he seems pretty clear on what are his thoughts and feelings versus the org.

It's frustrating to see/hear him at times when he's talking about the org outlook. But not because he feels that's the best way. That's just what the org is doing.

I think he's just caught between trying to be honest while not shitting on his employer or people he works with.

Sounds like Luca Pinelli it shall be.
He's actually not one of the 20, shockingly.

I hope the Yanetti worship has stopped. It’s always been so cringey how much Kings fan obsess over this clown for no reason.
The guy hasn't done much wrong, he's been the one beating the drum for certain players to be selected, only to be overruled by DL, then later Blake. From what I've read, it's a voting system with players among the scouting staff, thats how they're picked, with the GM having the final say and vote.

The best of the best

Los Angeles Kings

Picks: 133

NHL players: 65

Games: 17,302

Points: 6,505

Why they are in this category: The Kings have drafted the second-most NHLers since 2005, and those guys have played 746 more games than any other team's draftees.
This comment reminds of some of the old heads who are thirty years past their prime but find any and every moment to tell people how good they used to be.

Be present darling. Then you’d understand.

If I could read, I’d be pissed

Don’t care, fire him with them first or last. Doesn’t matter. Our drafting in the last few years has been extremely disappointing. He’s the head of scouting. He can f*** off with Blake, Luc, Todd, and Marco Sturm.

Yeah he can suck it that the Kings didn’t draft Stutzle and they f***ing picked a guy who’s a ten year project by the looks of it when the team looks like they’re impatient to develop players BUT they draft a project at 2.

I’m cool with Yanetti, Blake, Luc, Todd, and Marco Sturm going on the cross.

People make more excuses on here for Yanetti than battered wives claiming their man will change.

Never could figure out or even had an impression of why mike futa was let go. It's doubtful it was performance based. Must not have been a member of the surfrider foundation.

Blake let him go in favor of his best buddy Nelson.

What's Ontario's record the last few years? Don't they get knocked out after two games or something in the playoffs every year? I know it is a developmental thing down there but they aren't necessarily developing anyone over that timeframe and they are losing on top of it.

Pretty impressive.

To no surprise, goaltending has also been horrendous in the pipeline, and the Kings haven't developed any goaltender in eons.

The hiring of Wroblewski gets glossed over all the time but there was a lot of jerking each other off about how smart they were to bring in the 40 year old that worked with the US development program so he could be reunited with Turcotte and coach all these other prospects. He does the mini 2021 campaign and then takes a leave of absence in December of the next season and, poof, he's gone.

Then you've got Sturm down there who I don't think anyone was ever impressed with at the NHL level as an assistant. Never spent time in the minors and is now coaching at its highest level.

Not for nothing, but can I have a tough SOB like Stothers molding these softies that Blake drafts v. Marco Sturm? A guy that toiled in the AHL for the majority of his playing career and gets it?

Blake got so f***ing cute with the Wroblewski hire and then it looked like they didn't want Sturm up here as an NHL assistant so they tossed him down there. Man I hate this management group right now.

Well, the Reign were actually very good under Wroblewski. He just left though, and still no explanation He was also a hire outside of the org, which I think was great. They needed (and still need) more outside people offering feedback and trying to offer criticisms for them to reevaluate.

Imoo's departure seems to have had a major impact on how goaltending development has gone (for reference, he was part of the goaltending development team from 2015-2019).

Mike Futa's role was changed the moment Blake came in and took over. He went from Co-Director of Amateur Scouting to VP of Hockey Operations and Director of Player Personnel in the tail end of Lombardi's tenure. When Blake came in, he was moved to Assistant General Manager, but he was since no longer part of the scouting process, it seemed. He was then let go in 2020.

So, to me it just seems there were some people who were at least good at their job and left for various reasons.

My frustration here is there seems to be very small incremental changes to how the org is doing things - and on the one hand, it makes sense. You don't want to have an overhaul to have stuff too chaotic. But you also need to bring in the right people and have them come in to make the transition easier. Like, Manon Rheaume was brought in last year. Cool. What did she do? How did she assist with the development of prospects? Did they listen to her? I dunno. I just thought it was awesome an "outsider" of the organization was brought in, but aside from the announcement she joined the team, there's been nothing mentioned about her ideas or contributions.

Curious what makes you think Manon Rheaume was an outsider??

She never played in LA, never coached here. Didn't work at an executive level in any capacity with any former Kings player or management. Never a teammate of a Kings executive that I saw.

In what ways has she been tied with anyone in the Kings org before she was hired this year?

Given we know that Blake made the call on Stutzle/Byfield, Turcotte as well as us knowing he was uverruled by DL on the Teubert pick, plus several others I’m not sure why you are so down on him. He’s pretty open, has a great record in the later rounds and has had his GM make selections against their recommendations. Even then the bigger issue is how they are handled after the draft. It’s entirely possible that he does a great job and then everyone shifts the bed afterwards.

Which picks do you think HE got badly wrong?

Im fine with Yannetti, although I don't think their first round drafting is great. But as mentioned, that could be GM decisions. They get consistent results outside first round. I think their Euro scouting sucks though quite honestly. They haven't made a good Euro pick since 2015 in Cernak, none of their recent picks out of Europe look like they're tracking well or at least above the draft slot they were selected at.

She's been around the organization for years.....maybe not in an official capacity, but off and on for the better part of 20 years...she's friends with a majority of the personnel etc.
