Kings Article: LA Kings Director of Amateur Scouting Mark Yannetti on the 2023 NHL Draft: “We’ve Got to Get a Little Creative”

With this article and listening to the recent podcast, Yanetti seems like he’s lost and giving the most run in the mill opinions. Dudes gotta go. Thanks for all the duds. See yourself out.

I will never get why people are so quick to glurp and slurp Yanetti with all the shitty drafts.

Kings won't sell at the deadline and they still have multiple people blocked now at RD.
Point is, his value will be higher. Package for an upgrade somewhere or dump for blue chip assets. Either way. You get maximum value.

We have a GM that has no vision nor maps out a roster 2-3 years out. Everything seems to be done on the fly.

The problem is that we have Rob Blake who is a massive idiot and then you have Yanetti who’s an idiot as well. Mix both of them together and you get the Kings current prospect situation.

I forgot to point out another concerning quote:

“It’s not an accident that we found Wayne Simmonds in the late rounds, or Dwight King,” Yannetti added. “It’s no accident that we found Matt Roy and Mikey Anderson in the later rounds. In the next three years, we’re going to have to find 2-4 of those kinds of guys, and we’re not going to find them in the first round, because we’re not going to have those picks.”

Sounds like more first rounders to be traded away, unless there's another good interpretation I'm missing.

I think he's just making it clear that just because the Kings don't have first rounders, they should still be able to find NHL talent outside of the first round, which they've demonstrated in the past.

He specifically said next three years, meaning 2024 and 2025 1st round picks are expected to be traded.

I think by saying "we're not going to have those picks" may have inferred to the sexy, top 10 selection, because they'd be picking outside of that range.

He's quoted as such right above that paragraph.
“We’re going to be picking later and later and later, and that’s a good thing,” Yannetti noted, “We’ve done the re-tool on the fly, having the 20th overall pick, the 11th overall pick. We’re going to need to find players [in the later rounds of the draft].”

I hope the Yanetti worship has stopped. It’s always been so cringey how much Kings fan obsess over this clown for no reason.

Whats wrong with Yanetti? He gets out there and answers the questions even if its a mess up on his own part. At least he communicates not like management that hides from any questions and criticism.

I don't care what he says, people act like he's the god of drafting on here for some reason when all one has to do is see how the Kings have been drafting players.

Would you praise me if I was bad at my job but I was honest about being bad? Who would give a shit about my honesty if my work sucked?

The best of the best

Los Angeles Kings

Picks: 133

NHL players: 65

Games: 17,302

Points: 6,505

Why they are in this category: The Kings have drafted the second-most NHLers since 2005, and those guys have played 746 more games than any other team's draftees.

No one here thinks hes the best in the league god of drafting. At least I never see anyone say that.
I think its not drafting as much as it is development. And he just agreed that they made a mistake putting them all in the AHL early especially during covid.
I like him but would not be mad at all if he he was replaced. I do appreciate him taking the time to answer questions directed at this sect of the fanbase though.

If we get a top half first round pick for Durzi, Blake will deserve the Galaxy Brain GM award.
I think Durzi would have to be combined with the second round pick in order to move up. That actually could make sense if you're looking for an NHL-ready, 0.5 PPG puck-moving defenseman for a rebuilding team AND you have more than one first round pick. Probably not enough, but stranger things have happened.

More likely is Durzi and the second to move up into late 1st or early 2nd round, if there's a player the Kings really like.

I think Yank was hoping that if LA stays in the playoffs the next three years they won’t be picking top ten right?

Maybe I'm taking the quote literally, because he said "In the next three years, we’re going to have to find 2-4 of those kinds of guys, and we’re not going to find them in the first round, because we’re not going to have those picks." And all the people he referenced were non-first rounders.

It's very possible that's what he means, which is why I asked for an interpretation.

I just think trading a first-round pick two seasons in a row can really set an org back if things don't pan out. Going even longer without one? Especially if things don't work out? It's a disaster.
