Post-Game Talk: LA drowning in Oil tonight

Podkolzin has been wearing down the Kings but he’s also quietly chipping in offensively. He has three points in five games. Not earth shattering I know but he’s earning his salary and then some.

As much as we've tried to put Podkolzin in a scoring situation that's just not in his toolbox.

However, he might be the perfect playoff 4th line winger. Fast, hits, not afraid to fight, good forechecker, good defensively, and isn't completely hapless in the offensive zone.

If the Oilers go far Skinner will get some games. I’m sure of it. Knob did it a bunch last year.
I'm not against it of we go far. Skinner will probably be motivated to get his net back and usually plays well after some rest but only if Pickard has multiple bad games in a row. It's his net these playoffs.

That one was easy for Pickard. How about the breakaway stop on Kempe and the stop on the screen shot by Kempe labeled top corner with 3mins left? Pickard gloves that one with statement authority. Guaranteed both go in on Skinner.

Kempe beats Skinner for fun. Pickard is stoning the same guy.
That stop on Kempe gave me Ranford against Winnipeg in 1990 vibes.

One thing I loved about the game last night that I haven't seen mentioned yet - we kept grinding and kept playing a simple to the net offensive style even when Kuemper was very clearly on.

In the past we would get frustrated and start cheating, trying to pass it into the net, etc. We just kept the pedal to the metal and kept playing the exact game we need to play - straight lines, get to the net, bang in chances. In the middle of the game I was sure I was going to start seeing us get cute when the hard work wasn't cashing, but it never happened. So refreshing.
I looked at the shot location chart on moneypuck and I couldn't believe how many shot attempts we made from the blue paint.

I'm pretty sure I saw stats that Skinner is the worst sav% starter all time for how many game's he's played. No other goalie has been allowed to keep being a starter in playoffs for as long as he has with his level of performance.

Love Pickard, but if we do keep going, the skill level of the opposition is going to get much higher than what the Kings offer. Not to be a downer, but odds are we do eventually start to get very mad again about how unserious our org was about goaltending since last playoffs.

Ride or die with Pickard though, hopefully things do keep working out.
I might be the minority but I'm not ready to write Skinner off, he can come back and bring some of that last years playoffs backstopping still if Pickard falters. Especially with Oilers figuring it out and limiting the 5 bell chances.

Much more dramatic stats in the series. (one of these is not remotely like the others)

Pickard 2.62GAA

Kuemper 3.44GAA

Skinner (dunce stats) 6.11GAA and laughing about it while in net.

Of course Skinner is worst in league in the stat by a wide margin:

Skinner also worst save % in playoffs. Worst in every metric.

I'll be pissed (as will most of us) if they don't jettison out the airlock this summer.

He's a habitual bed shitter.

f*** Stuart Skinner and anybody that defends his franchise sewering goaltending.

Skinner has been garbage in the majority of his playoff starts and it’s not even close. 3 years in a row the backup had to come in and save his bacon because he was dropping the ball.

This skinner is playoff performer myth is ridiculous. He sucks in the playoffs.

The Oilers not attempting a similar trade to Kuemper-Dubois trade instead buying him out was a serious missed opportunity. Campbell buyout isn't cheap either. 2.3M next year. 2.6M the other year.
Maybe, but there was still some "shine" on PLD which made the deal possible. They should have traded Campbell after year 1, even with a retention it would have been better

Do we see any line up changes for the next series? Would Knobs dress Kapanen and or Skinner to give them reps? More fresh bodies may help down the road.
The team is cooking and playing their best hockey all year, I wouldn’t expect any lineup changes. However, each series can be very different. Certain players play better or worse against certain opponents or playstyles so I could see personal changes down the road if they make it through.

The Oilers should have kept him and play him under Knob system and allow him to rebuild his value. It turns out Stuart was the culprit

If we continue to advance down the playoff road, there will be a point that Skinner will once again get his opportunity, that is pretty much a given. Love what Pick is doing right now, but the reality is that at some point he will take a step back, can't expect him to win and play well in 16 straight games, and Skinner will get another chance. Hopefully if and when it happens, that things go better this time around.

If Pickard falters he deserves a chance to play himself out of it. He’s earned that much.

f***ing unforgiveable non-call on Kane.

That is a dangerous play. If Kane goes into the post there, he either loses half his teeth, or completely blows his shoulder apart.

What an absolutely ridiculous non-call. Actually cannot believe it.

Why is anybody surprised with the bush-league reffing that exists in the NHL. The NHL has by far the worst reffing of the major leagues in north america, and its not close.
