All I'm saying is we are about the only team that can have our way with the league when it comes to finding a new GM. You think Calgary could find a way to will someone like Scotty Bowman into a job? Or Buffalo? No. But the Leafs could.

Please expand on this and tell me all the good Gm's the leafs have gotten? and had they're way with the league?

Nonis is a capable administrator, a good right-hand but he has no vision. He helped Burke implement his, tried the same with RC with bad results.

I think TL had his hands all over the Clarkson deal and now is looking for a guy that will push back and save him from himself.

This kind of lateral moves are very common in the corporate world. A guy fails and is shuffled to make room for a new guy. The old guy is kept in a reduced role because he has the dirt on what actually happened.

Who cares what reason any one need to fire some one or if some one just signed a new contract. That is yesterday news. Time to look forward and build the team we want to have. If Leiweke is not confident that the current leadership group can get the job done when it comes to building a winner then he is in his full right to get rid of them and get people in who he trust and share views with regarding the path forward.

We have loads of bad contracts, some interesting young players and an upcoming draft. Get it done and get to work.

The coach needs to go. We've seen what this team is capable of. When a team falls this short of potential, and it's due to a consistently ****** defensive and possession system, it's the coach.

Paul Maurice schooled Carlyle with a terrible lineup.

I'm not sure I understand your point.

Did you not expect a President(if this is what Shanahan would be) to be hired at some point?

Tim Leiweke is the president, so no, I didn't expect anyone to be brought in.

I also didn't expect this fanbase to be reduced to a bunch of meat-craving morons who take the simple whiff of a move from an organization as something that is grand-sweepingly positive (I include myself in there)

Why is this a good move?

Because most of you know who Brendan Shanahan is? Recognize the name? Remember him being successful as a hockey player (which, for the record, has no bearing or correlation with how successful he can be in this sort of position).

Shanny could still fire him.

Well what exactly do you propose to do?

Do nothing.

Why put that pressure on Nonis? There's no need for it. Either give him full reign to do what he wants, or fire him.

This move essentially puts Nonis in limbo - you aren't getting rid of him, and you aren't giving him complete access to fix this. Again, why ? What the hell is the point in making a move like that?

I just don't understand it as anything other than a glorified PR move designed to tighten the noose around the GM's neck.

Paul Maurice will never get the appreciation he deserves.

Was a very good coach, who had an awful lineup and non-NHL caliber goaltending.

I always thought we should bring him back but who knows if he even wants to coach after this year.

Clarkson was the perfect storm, a guy that wanted to play in Toronto, that was coming off a couple of over achieving seasons/post season play, fit the bill of the type of player the Leafs thought they needed post Bruins series and was a shallow UFA pool when the Leafs had buyouts. Pretty sure any GM in Toronto would have signed that deal or a similar one.

This team choked during Wilson's last year...
This team choked in game 7 of last years playoffs with Carlyle...
This team choked this season away with Carlyle...

At what point do you stop blaming the coach and focus on the players...Wilson and Carlyle can't control Franson and his blunders on this ice, Reimer and his rebound control, Kadri and his sloppy defensive play, etc... They can practice all they want but in the end, the players have to execute. The players deserve just as much criticism as the front office.

No, any GM we've had since Burke. It wasn't like there was a bidding war among 30 teams. His own team didn't offer him that much to come back. What does that tell you?

Yeah, Clarkson only had 10 other offers that day, he left money on the table to come to Toronto and NJ did offer to match then they basically dumped similar term and money into Clowe.

They didn't match Edm or To's offer. They basically offered him Clowe's contract and when he signed for more they gave it to Clowe, and it's a better contract for a better player

I expect we'll hear sooner rather then later. Probably shortly after Game #82, if not sooner.

Although, Shanny may not make a decision until after the playoffs so as to not leave the Department of Player Safety in limbo.

He can always take on the role and carry out the remainder of his duties. He doesn't have to quit to get another

I am more intrigued to see what he brings to the table. What will he be doing really?
