This sounds a bit stupid to me considering debilitating injuries can happen at any moment.

I see very low upside in choosing 40M with potential to sign later for say 112M, rather than simply signing for 108M right now with potential to sign later for say 20M.
There is risk for sure, but some players will take it. I would think he signs now for three years to set up his final mega contract for 7 or 8 years. Salaries and cap never go down. Who knows what cap and superstar pay will be in three years, but I suspect it will be significantly more than now.

Matthews: Hmmmm...in three years the Coyotes will have fixed their problems...I'm sure of it!
You’ll have to wait 4 years as he still has one more year left on his previous contract before the 3 year deal kicks in.

It's kind of insane that we're in here bantering over 1-2m per year, when a soccer player just got a 775m contract for 1 year, and JAYLEN f***IN BROWN in the NBA just got a 60m/year contract.

If it is a shorter deal then I hope these visionaries see how empty our cupboards are. I wish they would stop trading 1st round picks for sugar-induced (zero nutrition) improvements to the roster. We have to pay AM because we have Tavares likely retiring in 2 seasons and no centers for prospects.

8 years would be smart because no guarantee on his wrist holding up

If I am Toronto, 5 years is okay, mitigates risk.

If he wants 3 years at anything over what McDavid and MacKinnon make, you can let him walk and try again.

When was this said? and where?
The Fan radio station. Nothing earth shattering though. 13.5M is the number that has been thrown around for a long time.

Not really. What are those leagues revenues? You cannot look at other leagues whatsoever

he doesn’t deserve a dime more than Mackinnons AAV. A year ago Mackinnon got 12.6 after winning the cup and consistently raising his game in the playoffs. Matthews has had a regular season better than any of Mackinnon’s but his past year was subpar by his standards and he’s never been close to as good as Mackinnon in the playoffs.

That's exactly what he wants and no way the Leafs let him walk. Then 3 years from now, the Leafs get bent over the same barrel for the 3rd time. It's the Leafs way.

It would be nice if people actually included any sort of information about when/where someone said something.

I can definitely see Matthews going the Juan Soto route. Young stud player offered a massive contract. Player refuses and takes a short term contract as they try to milk every million they can. Player regresses out of being a top five player, leaving millions on the table.

Biggest difference is Soto actually had some playoff success.

I personally would do 13.5 x 5.
He gives you until 31. Those are your best years. Makes no sense for Matthews so try to be a ufa at 32

I have concerns about his wrist and health. A 5 year term is probably ideal for the leafs
3 for Matthews

I think it’s 13.34 x 4

12.5 million for 8 years would set him up alright for his life after hockey.
Nah why leave millions on table. Hes doin whats really best for him. And more should do this. Only way u get past these absurdly low top salaries is if the top guys price themselves up. Good for AM 13.5 for 3 and then 15 plus for long term deal down the road.

The shorter term deals carry more risk for the player of they suddenly get a long term career altering injured tho

Sure but just as absurd as signing 7 or 8 year deals when cap should be on the rise. That espn money has to kick into the equation at some point. Nhlpa is run by jabberonis tho so they wont press the status quo.

If Matthews really does only want 3 years, that shows where his priorities are. A mercenary who only cares about being paid top dollar and doesn't actually care about building a winning team.

His last 5 year deal already didn’t give you a hint?

Friedman has been on the 5 year deal with Matthews but that would take him to a difficult age

Nhl stuck in dark ages. Only sport where u sign prime years contracts. Good for AM this the future. Nhl finally trying to join the rest of the professional leagues. Atleast 15 years behind as league.

Meh, the three year term could actually work in Torontos favor if he has additional down years or continues the trend of injuries then we could be looking at a pay decrease next time.

I like Auston and I hope he re signs with the leafs. Especially since the insufferable drama in the media around Nylander is apparently based upon him wanting to see what Matthews gets. Also I can sort of see Nylanders point if he has insight into Matthews’ negotiations. In no world is Marner worth 4.5mil less per season than Matthews. Matthews is obviously worth more but that’s a big chunk of change.

Did anybody listen to him? He said Auston is getting 13.5M and the only thing they are haggling on is term. I believe Matthews wants a short term deal and the Leafs obviously want a longer one.

My prediction. He comes in at 13.5M x 5

From when is this interview, and on what station?
