A comparable to Dallas's offer would've been Knies, 2 1sts, and 2 3rds. Knies and Stankoven are comparable talents in terms of market value, though I'm personally higher on Stankoven (who wasn't attached to center talents close to Matthews in Dallas but still produced well). Offering Minten and Cowan instead of Knies would've been laughed out the door because Carolina clearly wanted an impact youngster who is playing and producing in the league right now.
Laughable. Knies is far more proven and is 6'3" monster. I'd probably trade the entire Leafs team before moving Knies.

I don't believe any of this at all.

Has Kypreos ever been right about anything?

I don't doubt the Leafs inquired about Rantanen, 10 teams probably did. Almost a done deal? No way.
He was right about one of Cowan or Minten being gone....just not in any fashion that he thought....but he was still right. About as right as a broken clock being right twice a day.

I think the more accurate statement from Kypreos should ‘Leafs could have made a deal for Rantanen and he was open to re-signing’.

I doubt at any point the Leafs org actually thought the deal was done but there were 3 options on the table.

Deal 1 was for Marner which very predictably was never going to happen. Vetoed by the player

Deal 2 was for Knies and futures. Vetoed by the Leafs.

Deal 3 was Cowan + Minten + Picks. Vetoed by the Canes.

If Leafs were willing to go with deal 2 then there’s a good chance that Mikko is a Leaf for this playoff run and for 8 years beyond that.

Without including Knies the Leafs didn’t have the ammo to get this done. It’s funny to hear him proclaim Carolina took the lesser package and then Friedman comes on is like ‘No, the Dallas offer is better’ and then anyone not in Leafs land agreeing on that as well.

You do realize the coach’s comment was saying no player was better than Marner, right? That even though Marner isn’t the biggest or fastest he was still the best. Yes, Rantanen is a lot bigger. He’s more physical too. But he’s no longer available. Marner is now the best coming UFA, and by a large margin.

It’s a double edged sword, not having those elite level attributes forced him to be creative to a huge degree but the problem is his game has no plan B if the other team is clogging the slot at the cost of giving him time and space. You can’t really decide to run him on a chip and chase or fast counterattack line, he’s just got his bread and butter control game and if it’s not clicking they’ll force it anyway.

If this went through, this is a low risk trade I would have made too. Turn a pending UFA who will likely walk this summer into a rental for a superstar who has championship pedigree. If the Leafs got Rantanen and they won the cup, Treliving would look like a genius.
