Speculation: Kypreos- Leafs thought Rantanen deal was done

Yeah and imagine the Leafs also signed Ehlers at league minimum and Dobson coming out saying he’s only playing for the Leafs and at league minimum as well and he’s traded there for peanuts and now you kept Tavares (at league minimum) and Marner and added Ehlers and Dobson at league minimum. Toronto would be the best team in the world

That Leafs offer is only better in the mind of Leafs fan.

Cowan is a fine prospect but not truly blue chip. He gets pumped up more than he is. Minten isn't of any interest to Carolina so no, Cowan + Minten isn't more enticing than Stanoven who will jump in immediately and be an impact piece. 2 x 1sts are equal and Dallas gave 2 x 3rds AND Carolina got to ship Mikko back west. The Leafs offer wasn't on the same level.

It needed to be Knies and Leafs weren't willing to do that which is fair for them.

I’ve never seen a GM blow a whole situation like this.. sure they recovered for the future but they are worse now.

Never seen a GM make a big deal like that without an offer already agreed to and this is why… massive incompetence.

All UFAs they want sign league minimum 1 yr deals.....
 
The Leafs dont need anymore superstar forwards. If they're giving up the farm, they would be far better off paying that haul for someone like Josi.
 
Leafs offer wasn’t better because there was no NHL talent in it. Carolina is competing this year, i’d go with Stankoven too.

When you traded many of your 1sts and other picks, your top prospects are not at the same level as other teams
 
Apparently the Oilers were in on Rantanen, but I just don't buy it. It's like with the Leafs. We already have expensive core players. The cap we have is precious for filling out the depth. Teams also aren't aiming to unload huge assets for a pure rental.

This reeks of click farming, and also trying to placate the fanbase.

That and the Leafs development system hasn’t been amazing. Matthews, Marner, Nylander were all no brainer or top 10 picks. Knies is the only guy I can think of who they have drafted later and has been brought up and made a difference.

Might been projects to be like 3C… we don’t need that. Cowan is a nice prospect but is an RW and we have Jarvis and Blake. Stankoven is that and making an impact at the NHL level and maybe can be a C.

Knies as the LW would have been the fit
 
Wherever that was taken from it seems to contradict what Friedman said on Kypreos' on show late afternoon yesterday.

Apparently it came down to Rantanen saying he wanted to play in Dallas.

He called the Matthews captaincy a month out, he called Nylander's cap signing (I think), he called Toronto in on Rantanen long before Friedman or McKenzie, he called them dealing Minten a week before it happened

None of those are earth shattering hard to see outcomes. A tarot card reader could have put those together.

lol Ehlers and Dobson are in their prime and Tavares is what? 38? There’s a small chance he retires in offseason could definitely see him taking a league minimum like Spezza/Girodano/Thortan and if he wins a cup this year he probably retires. Not everyone plays until they can’t.
 
Toronto, if they aren’t absolute morons, aren’t asking their best player this year to waive his NMC at the trade deadline.
