According to Kypreos, Leafs offer was Cowen, Minten, and 2 1sts.

They were also all in for signing him between 13-13.5 per for 8 years.

Carolina decided they didn’t want to maybe face him in the playoffs and wanted to send him west for what they considered a lesser offer.

THIS SITE WOULD HAVE IMPLODED!

Imagine a top six of:

Knies - Matthews- Marner
Rantanen- Tavares-Nylander

On top of that, they apparently would have had enough for Laughton as well but not Carlo.

McMann-Laughton-Domi
Jarnkrok-Kampf-Holmberg

What could have been 🤦

Honestly, as fun as that forward group would have been, and I can't deny that would have been fun and I wouldn't have been excited because I would have.

I'm glad it worked out the way it did because that would have been a want, a very VERY fun want but still a want.

the way it worked they filled in needs.

They NEEDED a 3rd line center, they NEEDED a top 4 D and they got both of those things filled.

And if they need to fill in to acquire a winger in the future they still have Cowan and Danford to trade plus about 30 million in cap space.

...is Marner held to a different standard than say a Matthews??... :dunno:
Yes hes won a lot less then him in reg season awards/dominance, isnt a center and is slightly more unlikable personaility wise.

Really matthews is a choker too but his upside is higher than Marners.

Right now both got legacies for choking getting up their with the legandary status of Joe Toe & Patty Marleau duo

So the choice is a sewer rat with a porn stach' or a sewer rat without one? Both have Harry Potter level disappearing clokes for the playoffs....and I have to choose?

Does knies produce significantly more though? This stankoven is in his rookie season and is going to pretty easily beat knies rookie season in points. Also solid chance stank ends up a center.
He's a rookie because he played one game short of burning that classification. But they're both the same draft year and I'll take the 6'3" power forward who's might score 30.

If Leafs were signing Marner it would have happened by now. The fans chased him out of town.
No...his ego and greed is chasing him out of town. He won't take a 8 year contract like others. He wants a 4 year contract like Matthews so he can keep maximizing cap % and his money and screw any chances of the leafs winning the cup.

Hope the Leafs are so turned off by him that they walk away regardless of whether his contract asks become more reasonable.

Leafs would be insane to let Marner walk. With Rantanen off the market which coming UFA could be as good as Marner?

Stankoven at his ceiling blows Knies away

Stankoven is supposed to be a 90 pt Center/winger hybrid who is very skilled and a line driver

So far stankoven did not come near the level of play that would lead to hope he can become that player in 2-3 years.

Right now if Stankoven is a 60-70 pt winger LT and Knies is a 65 pt PWF he will be more valuable and better asset.

Knies ceiling is limited compared to Stankoven but his game has translated better and quicker to the NHL level due to great physical attributes and good usage.

Right now Id take Knies but if Stankoven becomes another Jarvis type player for Canes then itll be him

Yeah It was a lot of things that caused the fans in Toronto to turn on him. His attitude, playoff performances, contract negotiations…but I think shooting the puck over the glass in the Habs series was the straw that broke the camels back and his relationship with the fans was irreparably damaged. There was no one pressuring him, he had all day and it blew the series. It was his Bill Buckner moment.

Who cares... Marners incredibly overrated. There is a reason Cooper and co demoted him to the 4th line by game 3 at 4nations. Tocchet said the reason they changed the lines up for game 3 is they thought the team was top perimeter.

That's Marner to a T.... he plays his own style of hockey. No hit, no body contact. Doesn't go to the net. He likes to try to create offense from the blueline.

Cooper said it perfectly ... Marner isn't that skilled relative to other stars.

“When you are that size, you have to be unique at something,” Cooper said. “You have to be better than everyone else at something. If you really watch that game, the plays he made in tight, the plays he made in traffic… He is not the fastest kid on the ice. He doesn’t have the hardest shot on the ice. He doesn’t do a whole bunch of things that a lot of guys on both teams do better than him. But it is really hard to sit here and say, ‘Was there a better player?’

Someone's gonna regret paying him 12 million. If he doesn't have one of the elite players on his line (Matthews, Kucherov, McD, Mackinnon)... his numbers are gonna plummet.

This is a guy who might not even hit 100 points AGAIN... he plays with Matthews. He plays on a PP with Tavares, Matthews, Nylander...

Hes 14th in the league in 5v5 points and only has 8 even strength goals. Add to it...he's slow, probably the softest player in the league and emotionally very weak... he struggles to hold it together in interviews and can't handle negative press.

Naaa....I think letting him walk will be addition by distraction.

You do realize the coach’s comment was saying no player was better than Marner, right? That even though Marner isn’t the biggest or fastest he was still the best. Yes, Rantanen is a lot bigger. He’s more physical too. But he’s no longer available. Marner is now the best coming UFA, and by a large margin.
