Whose bags can I pack
lol thats funny, I'd be okay with that return though Id rather not move knies. I think the important thing to recognize here is that for the past couple months insiders have been wrong about everything involving the leafs.

Chayka came pretty out of left field
CJ and Dreger were saying they thought berube's job was safe
no one had the Woll trade
Hiller's name didn't get mentioned by anyone until this morning

its pretty obvious that with treliving gone we are back to the information blackout ages. Any discussion on the leafs should be taken with enough salt to raise your blood pressure. They're just filling air time leading up to the draft.

Hamilton, Mercer and the 12th overall pick?
As a Leafs fan, Hamilton + 12th overall + some random depth prospect for Knies doesn't seem THAT bad. By the time we're a serious contender again, Knies will be almost 30. We're probably drafting McKenna, another LW, and it isn't ideal to have 3 of your best guys being wingers in a league where teams are built around centers and defensemen.

Devils fans would probably prefer using 12 to draft Belchetz ("the next Knies" maybe) and trading Hamilton elsewhere for assets to add with Belchetz to their kids for their future. That probably makes more sense than Knies, assuming Belchetz isn't a dud.

I would do that deal instantly. Im not too interested in Belchetz tbh

There are moves I would do but they would be overpays.

like Nemec+Mercer+12

walking out of the draft with Mckenna, Mercer, Nemec and whoever they would get at 12 they would be a better team.

But I'm certainly not pushing him out the door.
Nemec isnt a top 4D man yet atleast on a playoff hopeful/contending apsirations team, he's a worse version of 2026 Morgan Rielly albeit with upside remaining due to youth and untapped potential.

Overall, though its hars to see him ever becoming a true top pairing dman. Best case scenerio is probably closer to a more offensive Ryan Pulock who in his prime was a strong high end #3D on the RS, with Nemec probably being mid 40 point upside with defensive issues/inconsistencies.

That package definately doesnt excite me enough to deal Knies.

Would you be willing to add in Tsyplakov (slightly cheaper, 1 year term) and take back Max Domi (slightly more expensive, 2 years term)? And make the prospect half-decent? Not one of your top 10 prospects. But say... a top 20 or top 25 prospect in the New Jersey prospect pool.

I'm sure every team in the league is lining up to trade a top pairing defenseman for a winger.
I mean, Rob Blake jumped at the chance to piss away Brock Faber (and a first round pick) for the double-edged spoon that is Kevin Fiala.

But he isn’t a GM now, so you’re probably right.

If you play him in the AHL, Lyubushkin is a top pairing dman
Lyubshkin has already been a top pairing dman in toronto twice lol

Once in 2022 when oaired with Rielly
Again in 2024 when we acquired him again when paired with Rielly

They both actually were pretty competent together and played better than you would imagine.

Lyubushkin used to use toronto as an opportunity to get paid. Hes got 1 year left on his deal, and pay day getting closer....

Ofcourse wouldnt be for knies but a Nick Robertson for Lyubshkin + mid round pick type deal could definatelt happen.

Yea I would be fine with it - I guess the only ? is what are the legality of trading someone injured in Domi with his situation

Prospect wise take your pick. There arent many untouchables in our system

My first question would be are there any big time D men rumored to potentially be moved or not resign with their current team in the next year or two

Question.

What is it about Knies that the Leafs are willing to move him?
I personally think it's multiple little things that add up to a good reason to trade him

1 - he's a winger. winning NHL teams are built around centers and Dmen with wingers being comparably less importtant

2 - he's 23 going on 24. Leafs kind of suck now, and even if they made the playoffs in 2 or 3 years, it's extremely unlikely they make the Stanley Cup Finals until Knies is almost 30, is 30, or is older than 30. therefore, it might make sense to trade him now while his value is high. bad non-playoff teams should view most of their players as trade chips, except for young core pieces they plan to win a Cup with.

3 - league interest is high, could end up being a bidding war

4 - he doesn't have trade protections

5 - behind the scenes... perhaps management doesn't like his attitude, or he has privately expressed that he would prefer a trade to a USA team, and won't extend later on as a UFA (multiple years from now) to stay in Toronto. you can make it known to your GM that you wouldn't mind a trade without actually asking for a trade.

Kypreos said today he’s hearing that the offers for Knies are centered around the following:

Top pairing dman
1st Rounder
Another player/prospect

Any idea what teams could match that?

If it’s a package like that I don’t think you can say no.

if Chicago goes Reid at 4 then they likely offer Sam Rinzel, Marek Vanacker and one of their 3 1st in 2027

Wish the Leafs would come out and say they’re not trading their prized young PWF. This is getting ridiculous.

Chayka said he’d do anything that made the team better, but that it would be really hard to be better than knies
