Crazy to think he’d already be gone if Treleving would have been competent enough to register the deal on time. So Leafs ownership must have been on board with it.
I’m not sure about the new management group but they’ll have to trade something of value to completely rebuild that D. It will hurt whatever it is.
I think their plan is going to be either make a splash in the FA ( Raddysh, Tuch , Marchment , Tolvanen. are some personal guesses ) market or absorb some high salaries / underachieving talent ( Hamilton , Hayton, Petterson etc ) from other squads to improve the mix. I think Bourque would be a nice target if Dallas ends up tight against the cap . I like the idea of going after Mintyukov but doubt Toronto has the available ammo . Thought Woll was gonna go for Zel . Still wouldn’t hate that swing in general ( obviously not for Woll ) .

Regarding your #2 explanation, shouldn’t they look to trade Matthews and Nylander and everyone if that’s the case then??
In my view yes, but maybe not Sundin and Chayka's view. They may also view Matthews and Nylander as true core guys, and Knies as an "outer core" guy. In that case, they may approach the inner core and outer core guys with different philosophies.

Okay buddy, you can live in your delusion world. The rest if us live in reality where YOU are wrong
Yes, I'm the one delusional here lol

I'm not holding it against you tho, I meant you suffer enough by being a Leafs fan ;)

But I do enjoy the news of the Leafs hiring Chayka and Hiller, the scraps of the NHL.

Keep the tradition alive!!

Normally I’d agree with you and I thought that the Knies rumours last year were just clickbait too. But look at how close he was to being traded. At this point I don’t know what to think. Was Treleving just desperate to keep his job or are they still serious about moving him. As I said earlier he’s a guy I’d keep and build around.

If it's Montreal, it's going to be something like...

Dobson
Hage
1st rounder

Our first round pick is too low, so the second player we trade away would need to be a pretty good prospect.

I really doubt this happens, but if it does it would be funny because Hughes would have flipped Dobson right away. Toronto would get a puck moving top pairing guy to go along with Raddysh who they will likely sign, plus a potential 2C down the road.

There are moves I would do but they would be overpays.

like Nemec+Mercer+12

walking out of the draft with Mckenna, Mercer, Nemec and whoever they would get at 12 they would be a better team.

But I'm certainly not pushing him out the door.
As a devils fan, if you can't do better than Nemec as the centerpiece in a return for Knies, don't trade him.

Value wise that’s what I was thinking as well

Leafs are not trading Knies unless its a ridiculous over payment that would be stupid not to take.
Top pair young D man, Top prospect forward, 1st round pick (top 15) depending on the other 2 options.

Even the 4th overall pick for Knies, i'm not sure if that is enough because there is no guarantees that pick will be as good as Knies.

It would be risky. I would still want another prospect thats somewhat more of a known as well.

Didn’t they trade Knies last year but just failed to register the deal by one minute?
I wouldn’t be so confident that he’s not traded.

If he could stay healthy Guhle will be a top pairing D on a team he isn't blocked by Hutson on. Signed to a great deal for another 5 years. Hate to lose him as he's our only physical D but we have depth on the left side.

There would be no Hage or Zharovsky going with him, ok with a 1st and another mid-value player/prospect

Knies is great but he aint worth Dobson straight up. Unless that team is stacked with D.

Leafs would have to add to get Dobson.

Not a knock on Knies but top pair Dmen who can be your #1 is worth more than a top line wing.

Like if im Buffalo i would trade Power/Byram for Knies
