Rumor: Kyper: It's no secret the Leafs will go after Montour if he's unsigned after the finals, Tanev has also never left Treliving's list.

I don‘t think anyone is saying they are going to get everyone, but they have some holes to fill, so of course they are going to kick the tires on all of these guys.
As will all clubs needing to fill holes in their lineups. But going too high on yearly cap allocation and term is a recipe for coming disaster. And for the Leafs to get guys who are looking for the biggest contract they can get isn’t a smart move. They will have to overpay.

Absolutely. Some of these UFAs are going to get paid stupid money. And, I keep seeing this 21 million in cap space figure being thrown around. That‘s not a whole lot with all of the needs they have.

True, but the guy is such a blow hard.....................remember the Stamkos ufa last time? Kipper says, there is no way he gives TB a discount.....the Leafs are offering a 11M plus endorsements and hours later he stays in TB for 8M LOL

He might have some insider info, but not in TB!!
He is also a schill for the PA throwing around crazy amounts of money when he has his airtime.....guy is just plain wrong most times, and annoying.....
meh...he is just a guy on tv talking about the leafs. I couldn't care less if he is wrong most of the time. So are most in here. There is usually 3 of them on that show and they tend to give differing opinions to keep the conversation going. Its just grist for the leafs talk mill. I don't take it that personally.

Yup. Allocating 6 for Zadorv and 4 for Joshua and 7 for Montour and cap dpace is soon gone. Makes no sense to do that for the Leafs. These players chasing the biggest contract they can get will end up on weaker teams who have the cap room to overspend and aren’t worried about winning.

That includes Cade Webber and Conor Timmins to, neither of which will make the roster so it's actually about 21 million
But the holes in the lineup are significant. Rielly is barely a top pairing guy.
As badly as they need a goalie they also need a top pairing minute muncher defender who actually plays defense. That’s not cheap.
Now add a real goalie.
Now fill the 2 holes on the top 6.
Then fill out the roster with capable depth.

21 mill isn’t that much.

Rielly is absolutely a top pairing guy, the issue is he doesn't have a partner

Unless Tanev was going to provide solid goaltending or scoring, he wasn't really the missing piece.

Woll has the best stats of any goalie from the playoffs

Not the type of dman the Leafs should be going after. Tanev, sure, but Montour isn’t what they are lacking.

Incorrect. Leafs have had no scoring from D or puck moving ability for years. Leafs defend well. So many people have no idea how the Leafs even play these days

What needs do they really have? They need a 1B goalie and 2 top 4 dmen for sure. People talk about them like they are the blue jackets.

And next offseason they will have another 20m of cap space to work with

Wings? Dmen? Goalies? Depth? Don‘t be daft. They need a backup goalie, top 6 wingers, top 4 dmen, as well as spare forwards/D.

Forward group is good. They have a lot of prospects who have established themselves or are ready to make the NHL up front.

They need a goalie in case Woll is injury prone and to replace Brodie and add another top 4 guy who makes a difference hopefully.

They need a bottom 6 that can chip in during the playoffs too. The bottom 6 contributed 1 goal and 3 total points the entire series. Robertson, Holmberg and Jarnkrok were a pretty bad line. I realize McMahon didn't get to play aswell.

Were hoping Minten and Cowan, potentially Grebenkin too, can come in at ELC and boost it, but its definitely an area of concern which is why were probably going to be interested in Dakota Joshua

12th worst in goals against.
10th worst at penalty kill.

Looks like you, as a Leafs fan, are in denial of how the Leafs play. But go on and tell us how good their defense was when the stats don’t reflect that.

What about in the post season?

And those numbers are also scewed. We had Samsonov playing like an ECHLer for the first half of the season and then Martin Jones playing when he was sent down. No defense is surviving that.

Samsonov had all 4 losses. The defensive play wasn't the real issue.

Simply pointing out his lack of credibility....
Why are you so offended at that simple truth?
Perhaps it's just better if you just move along? But you had to respond?
I suppose you're the hero we needed.

Honestly really hope Florida signs Montour and Dallas signs Tanev. Two contracts I want to avoid like the plague

How are the Leafs supposed to sign anyone? Why would anyone want to go there because of taxes? All these UFAs could make much more money anywhere else. Damn those evil taxes

Montour was amazing last year. This year he has been anywhere from ok to brutal. That shoulder injury limited him.
Half a PPG and 2nd in icetime on the probable Cup winner. Yep definitely sounds like a "brutal" player and not just spoiled fans nitpicking because a player is only really, really good and not award-winningly good.

Tanev is worth a 2 year deal. We all know you’re playing with fire on 3 years. Meaning the team willing to go 3x $6.5 is gonna land him. Scary money because of the obvious.

Doubt he even hits July 1. Dallas is trying to sign him.

Montour has Toronto BUST written all over him. Will he help? Absolutely, but how much is the real question? How much more than handing Gostisbehere 3x $4.5-$5 million? Montour is gonna get 6x $6.5-$7.

I say they’re 100% better off signing Brady Skjei and Gostisbehere, and whatever they get for Marner. Ghost gives them the secondary offense from the 3rd pairing like he did for Detroit last year, as well as the PP, and Skjei can eat minutes. If it’s Theodore they get in a Marner trade, that pairing makes the Leafs such a better team. Remember, Theodore has played the right side most of his career. So can Ghost btw.

Then they go sign DeBrusk to take Marner’s spot. He can play their high pace, and when he struggles, he can play a different role. He’s not useless when he’s slumping like Bertuzzi.

They don’t have to get crazy stupid. If Ghost signs somewhere else cause his money gets semi stupid, sign Justin Schultz for that bottom pairing spot, and secondary PP. They need someone like Skjei who can eat minutes effectively. That’s the most important thing after whoever they get in the Marner deal.
