Next time I will ignore it like it's a totally regular hockey playing man's voice and not distinguishable in tone, pitch, or enunciation. I am just realizing effeminate is now considered derogatory. I can only guess that the woman I used to powerlifting with, who had a gruff, raspy, masculine voice cannot be described that way either(yes she used testosterone and steroids and her name was Mary.

lol wtf is this

Pretty hilarious interview. I loved his honesty about how he had no interest in any part of the game besides scoring goals on the powerplay.

His explanation was funny about how he would be getting cut every training camp, but then a couple forwards got injured which allowed him to “get some powerplay time”. He said it with a slight smile, like it was just clockwork. Coaches didn’t like his game —> others get injured —> back on the powerplay. Rinse and repeat.

I thought so too. He didn't duck the question about Evander Kane admitting Kane was asking for it by not being one of the guys, but also saying he loved him on his line. Lots of respect for Wellwood for his honesty.

It’s good to see someone be honest, but what really irked me, was saying that Kane deserved to get his clothes thrown in to the shower and bullied because he liked to do things on his own and because he dressed different.

That’s honestly pretty f’ed up, nobody deserves to get bullied, especially for not being exactly like everyone else.

not working out, not being compliant about his rehab from the major surgeries he had
Enjoyed the after game partying far more than the actual playing.
Imagine being a fan of a team him and his peers are playing for, paying money to watch that team do their best to win a championship, and this is their attitude. If I was a supporter of a team this type of athlete played for I would hesitate one second knocking him out if I walked past him on the street.

Lol no you wouldn’t.

The idea of assaulting a player because he doesn’t play the game like you want him to, is such a pathetic man child idea and really easy to type on a forum.

Grow up.

Who knows exactly what Kane did to get his clothes thrown into the shower, but as Wellwood explained, Kane could not take a joke at all. A slight chirp his way would often result in a threat of violence or fighting. So when Big Buff throws your clothes in the shower it should be a sign you're not rowing in the same direction as the team.

I wouldn't doubt if it wasn't larger than that.

You should probably stop watching sports as a lot of professional athletes feel this way.

I always thought the hardest part of playing in the NHL would be the constant grind it takes season to season.

I almost guarantee some guys out there don’t really care about hockey and just enjoy the paycheque/ lifestyle, which seems to be consistent with what Wellwood is saying.

Yea, for majority of players it very much becomes a job. I know a former NHLer that wouldn't touch a stick or put on skates until mid August in the off season. The travel, video sessions, practices, morning skates, games is a grind in the latter part of players careers. Like you said, for a lot of guys it becomes maintaining the lifestyle as long as they can, to go from clearing 6 figures every 2 weeks to nothing, no set schedule is massive lifestyle change.

Lmao, i should stop watching sports because some athletes are dicks? Maybe i should also stop listening to music since plenty of artists are f***ed up people?

You seriously can’t be this stupid.

The way Wellwood explained it was very straightforward, they bullied Kane for being different. If there was anything more to it, he would’ve said something else than ”He dressed different and liked to eat alone”

I haven't listened but a lot of players sound like frat bros or jocks. Someone with a cadence that is unusual would stick out.

In wrestling, there's this big guy, Keith Lee, who looks like a real bruiser but sounds like he's reading Wuthering Heights for an audiobook or something. It's nothing that detracts, but it sticks out.
Keith Lee sounds like a low-rent Shakespearian actor. He must spend hours on his promos, and once he's done he grabs a thesaurus to replace every word he can with a more complicated equivalent which ends up confusing the audience because they have no clue what he's even talking about.

Anyone else listen to this interview?

To this point I had never heard Wellwood interviewed and I found it pretty entertaining. He shared his views about junior hockey, not working out, not being compliant about his rehab from the major surgeries he had, spoke about Evander Kane.

My main takeaways:

1. Didn't LOVE the game. Mentioned how boring and monotonous the seasons got. Enjoyed the after game partying far more than the actual playing.

2. Super laid back attitude. Quite a cerebral dude with a perspective that most GM's would not love. While you need a bit of it on a team, his laissez-faire attitude could certainly be seen as a distraction.

3. His voice and pronunciation of certain words were quite effeminate.

4. Understood his role on every team, specifically with the power play.

5. Does not watch any hockey currently or since he retired.

A good place
100 points in 57 games in his final OHL season. Saw that translate to the AHL with a 55 point rookie season, followed up by 87 points in 80 games (which was 4th in the AHL during the lockout season, which had young NHLers like Spezza, Staal, etc in it). Saw that translate to the NHL with a 45 point rookie season and then 42 points in 48 games in his sophomore season (~72 point pace).

I remember watching him, he was super skilled, and he seemed primed based on the above trajectory to become a ~60-70 point centre ... And then... He was mostly a <30 point player after that, and was out of the league by age 30.

Not at all surprised to hear about his laid back attitude, lack of interest in the game, interest in partying, etc. In terms of careers that could have gone MUCH better with more dedication, he's a Leafs example of wasted potential that I think about.
A lot of people dislike their jobs. Even if they’re good at it.

Pretty boring podcast I assume when all you can talk about is what this guy did in the past. Doesn't watch or follow hockey so he has zero opinions or any idea what's happening in the NHL at the moment. Why have him on a hockey podcast?

For many it's just a job. Not all of us love our jobs but really like our pay cheque. Nothing wrong with that.
