New York Islanders: Kyle Palmieri extended for 2 years ($4.75m AAV)

Don't love it. He will be 35 next season, rather have spent that money on someone who is 5 years younger. But its only a two year deal so i can live with it.
I think Darche is put in a tough spot. these deals are basically done. I’d rather the cap space and the pick/prospect we could have had. I want change. I don’t want to watch the same guys anymore. It’s awful. He’s also due for an injury..

seems fair enough but that cap space is getting pretty tight to sign the key RFA's so unlikely much left to take a shot at Ehlers (for example)

Darche stays in the good books with agents by honoring what they negotiated with Lou / same goes for Boqvist .

If Marner is signing here, you figure out what trades need to happen to be cap compliant.

In the much more likely scenario that he isn’t, you resign the RFAs and stay away from ugly UFA deals altogether.

It's a parting gift from Loyal Lou.
and deserved.....good signing. Likely not to move on from Palms this year, next being more likely. Had to have one of Nelson or Palms moving forward to transition with and Nelson got us some good stuff. I am fine with this and Boquist

wtf is with all these no trade clauses? It isn’t like he got them to take fewer years to get the NTC. Is that the only way Lou got guys to sign here?
Too many guys on this roster with trade protection.
Vets get NTCs. Would be curious to see how many players on each team have them but FWIW I believe Tampa has more players on them, as one example. The entirety of the Devils defense has them, with the exception of Hughes and Nemec, who are both ineligible. And Hughes will get trade protection on his next contract.

I wonder what would have happened if there was no prior agreement - would Darche have signed Palmieri? I mean, he does need to fill out a roster, and perhaps more importantly he might care about his reputation with players and not start off as GM as the guy who backed out of a deal a player had with the team. So I don't necessarily consider this a "Darche move". All said, it's a reasonable AAV and term (thank God it's not 3 years). And if the idea is truly to try Ritchie as the 2C, then Palms is a good veteran presence to put with him.

Also, he has a full NTC this year, but if the Isles are missing the playoffs and Darche gives him a chance to go for a Cup with a contender, he could waive.

Is he surprised if ritixhie is penciled in to start as a 2C next year. They have Pageau. Horvat. Barzal. They all make more sense. Maybe after the deadline when I suspect we are out of it and Pageau is moved. Give Ritchie more ice and opportunity. On another note - Ritchie may suck. Lots of guys good jr players in the unemployment line.

Except they don't seem to play both Horvat and Barzal at C. That could change, or not. JGP as the 2C? I mean, if you're tanking that's great. My guess is that, barring additional moves, they try Ritchie at 2C (note that I said "try", not "pencil in"), and if it doesn't work then they have Horvat and Barzal both play C. Or maybe there are additional moves.

I think Ritchie will see some time on the Island already next season.

But for those thinking he's being penciled in for a spot on the team, then you really didn't see him play this season.

He's going to need time on the farm.

And that's a good thing.

I'm not worried about the hands, the passing instincts, or the head for the game. But he's going to need an adjustment period with game pace and the speed of bigger, stronger players.

Now we know that the deal with Palmieri was in place. In fact, it was prolly already signed.

Both he and Boqvist were rumored before the news on Lou being let go. They've just been on pause ever since.

Don't think Darche was given a say in the matter.

We’ll likely never know if these deals were already done, if they were basically done and Darche agree because of owner pressure or to not annoy players by reneging, or if he likes the deals and it is part of his plan to be competitive next season. That’s unfortunate, because it would give some hint as to his plan for the team. If he brought Palmieri back because he thinks last year’s team was a playoff team that missed due to injuries and only needs minor tweaking, then I’m a lot less confident in the new hire. He deserves time and the benefit of the doubt about this signing, but the draft weekend will be very telling, I think.

He said in the presser clear as day that he thought absent the injuries the Isles were/are a playoff team.

The second year NTC lets him pick his destination at the deadline, if needed. A guy like Palms will have several suitors at the deadline - he delivers in the playoffs. Veteran GMs want that.

Patience everyone. This is a long term fixing of the ship. Need to find scoring somewhere in the near term. Palmieri was almost carrying the team by himself at times. I never like no trade/no movement clauses but that was Lou. Glad Palms is back though

::yawn:;

Half the league is a playoff team.

Do they plan to flip him at the trade deadline for assets to help their rebuild ? Curious what he'd cost ?
Full NTC first year. They might ask if they're out of it but should be assumed that he's sticking around.

But in terms of cost, expectation last deadline was that he could get a 2nd+, unclear what the plus would be. But then it came out that he was staying and they were working on the extension.
