Can’t believe Dubas didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to add a FREE draft pick from Edmonton.

He’s had several instances of brutal asset mismanagement but this is the absolute worst. By far.

Look at other teams around the league accumulating assets by taking on bad contracts. Dubas didn’t even need to add one cent in contracts and he could have picked up a draft pick.

Refusing to take a free draft pick because he didn’t want to help Edmonton save a few hundred thousand in cap space is laughable.

He wanted a better pick and Edmonton was offering trash plain and simple. That 6th rounder is going to make you feel better? Haha

Are we seriously upset over a potential 6th round pick? The undrafted players that we invite to camp are just as likely to make the team... I see no reason Dubas needed to do the Oil a favour to sign Hyman. I could see you getting upset if Dubas turned down a 3rd rounder or even a 4th but a 6th rounder does not cut it for me.

Edmonton was never offering a free draft pick. They would want something for it. No team is going to give away a draft pick. This is yet another bashing thread. This time you made up the cause.

if the worst case of asset mismanagement by far is not taking a 6th round pick to let , it's a ringing endorsement of his asset management ability.

Let's look at some of the moves Dubas has made in his time as GM:
-Traded Nolan Vesey for a conditional 7th round pick.
-He picked up a 5th round pick last year to retain some of Lehner's salary.
-He picked up a 4th round pick to take Clarkson's salary away from Vegas
-Traded Carrick for a conditional 7th round pick
-Traded Gordeev for a conditional 7th round pick

It has absolutely nothing to do with him not wanting to get a "free pick"

Edmonton was willing to give Dubas a draft pick for the rights to a player he had ZERO intention of re-signing Hyman.

This is the equivalent of having someone offer you a scratch and win lottery ticket for the rotten banana you’re about to throw in the garbage - - and then refusing the offer because you want a 6/49 lottery ticket.

That is not true. There is an on-going negotiation for the Leafs to sign Hyman for 8 years and then trade him. Edmonton has untill the 27th to crap or get off the pot.

I'm OK with him leaving....but what the hell is Dubas doing allowing Hyman and agent talk to teams way ahead of the ufa date? He put himself at a huge disadvantage. Is dubas talking to the free agents he wants yet? Nope....why not? Because other gms have more sense. There is a reason this isn't common.
Hamilton and Jones were given the same permission that is three for this year alone. There are possibly more.

You have no idea what level his commitment or lack thereof was/is concerning Hyman. And there's been enough in the press to demonstrate interest in resigning Hyman was most certainly there. And if interest was there then obviously one doesn't have some interest and zero intention at the same time.

It's simple. You can hate the man all you like and use facts to do so. You don't need distortion on top of facts to support your hate.

Totally incompetent GM. When the dust settles he will go down as one of our worst
Right now, it certainly looks like it milord. Like we always, always lose in the beginning of the playoffs and our team is even now looking like "dolls squad" like I like to call em' sire. We aint have the heard, the smart or the art. And we definitely ain't hard sire. We have simmonds yeah... but now even hyman is gone and bogosian too. Joe Thornton might be back, signed and fully, but still, he ain't no killa. He is also a real playoff choker, with the history of it in san jose. Always. We need otha suckas as like to call sire...... we need a couple of real clutch killas now. Like Coleman, E.Kane, Rinaldo, something real ugly.... who can punch a motha out. Hard. Otherwise sire,,.... we finna lose again, early on too. Dubas ain't doing it right. He paid too much for our millionares, now we can't have mo thugs. We also need to pay for like andersen, martin jones or anderson or reimer now too sire.... that costs too. A dollar dollar bill y'all. Dubas ain't have dat.

Jones isn't a free agent... not comparable. Hamilton is just one comparable, doesn't seem to be working out so hot for Carolina either.

But it is not as uncommon as you claimed.
It's not?..... uncommon means doesn't happen alot, not doesn't happen at all. You could name only two out of the entire crop of ufas...please tell me how this means its not uncommon?

Three this year. I still include Jones as he was signed to the 8 year extension.

I wouldn't take it either. No favours should be given to opposing teams. Let the Oilers take an extra $400k hit for the next seven years or pay with the draft pick accordingly, it's their choice.

Hyman will get paid, just as I said he would in the middle of this season. Whether 7 or 8 years, it's no difference. Good for the Oilers for going for it. In a competitive league they have to be grossly naive to believe another team is going to assist them at subpar rates.

Pay up in the draft or pay out in cap space. It's Oilers call.

There's logic to it.

Dubas made an offer to Hyman (let's say approx 8 x 4M).

He told Hyman to go out and see what other teams were offering. This way Hyman could come back with the best offer and let Dubas match it before the UFA window opened (i.e. last day Leafs can offer 8 years). It would also allow Hyman a chance to get that 8-year deal from another team.

That's all there is to it. I don't think Dubas did this out of the goodness of his heart. But it is a win-win and the right thing to do.
