Is it possible to have reliable post season success with VERY expensive contracts ?

1679665769307.png

I guess Tampa has some expensive contracts now.
With 3 of the top 7 most expensive contracts, I just dont think the math adds up.

Dubas signed the deals. Ultimately he needs to be shown the door for it. Renewing his contract doesnt make sense. His overpay contracts have hampered the team's short term and long term success.

I'm not vocal on this topic but he should stay. I think most fans are captured by the on ice product, which is top notch, but don't evaluate what's done behind the public eye too.
Dubas has continued to make this team better each year he's been here in every aspect
i don't speak much on him and stay/go stuff - but i don't see how he handles this season any better than he has really

"I was so bitter, so bitter."

"I loved it there. It was the first time I found a home and felt like I'd had success that I'd been looking for a lot of my career. It seemed like it was a perfect fit...It all came together, but it was a tough pill to swallow."

"It's one of those things you have to accept some things that don't really add up in your mind, it's just the way it works... In reality I don't think the expectations were that long for me or that high for me at the time, but it obviously worked out well for me in the short time I was there."

So a lousy one third of the fans who care enough to sign up to this forum and vote are happy with Dubas' performance to date

Good Lord.

A one third approval rating is brutal. Absolutely brutal. What a horrendous display in lack of confidence among the fan base.

I'm honestly surprised he has that high a rating.

Nothing this man does makes any sense. There has literally been no progress since he took over. Oh, but a few more points at the end of the regular season you say.

Funny that, because I have never, not once in my life, seen a single person yet that said they really wanted the Leafs to finish with a few more points in the regular season than ever before.

Because it's never crossed anyone's mind to say.

Nobody cares about record breaking regular seasons when the team is breaking records in futility every postseason. All those record breaking regular seasons and guess what? They STILL haven't won a damn thing.

No Presidents Trophy. No Prince Of Wales Trophy. No Atlantic Division trophy.

The team has stagnated.

At the end of the day Dubas has done nothing to advance this team. If they go out early in the playoffs again he will almost certainly be dismissed. Because ownership clearly doesn't approve of his performance to date either or this lame duck GM would have a new contract already.

So long as that doesn't change it won't matter what his approval rating among fans is anymore anyway.

It has never, and will never matter what fans think when it comes to who the Leafs hire or fire.

He’s clearly changed his thought process on what’s needed to win. For the first time in his tenor the Leafs have a chance in the playoffs.

I think they had a shot last year. He had started to bring in some guys he thought would work in the playoffs.

If they lose early and he is let go, wherever he ends up I do think he will be able to build a roster a lot quicker than he did here.

Looking back at the D-corps from when he first arrived to today is really impressive.

“Our whole thinking shifted to that we felt last night — with the competition and what it meant for the whole league — we owed our best. That included playing Ilya in the game and giving him one more before he was tested and ready to go for playoffs.

We viewed the Florida game, because of what it meant for Florida, Pittsburgh, the Islanders, and Buffalo, we owed it our best lineup last night, including playing a couple of guys who are a little dinged up.”

I don’t care what any knee jerk apologist argues, the above is absolute horseshit management. You worry about your own team , if players are “dinged up” you rest them, you don’t worry about owing your best for nothing hockey. I can’t even believe they had those conversations, he’s a great hockey mind, but he loses the plot at times, and he risks our players for nothing but his own hubris. Maddening.

Obviously, this fan poll will be the first thing they look at when deciding on Dubas, I'm. Sure! 🙄

A manager's job is to give people under them the best position and tools to succeed.

Look at the roster going into the playoffs this year. You can be petty about a few trades you didn't like. But the roster now has all the tools needed to succeed. The depth is the best I've seen in Toronto since before the lockout.

He's done a good job.

The roster changes he‘s made since the beginning of this season tells me he knows you can’t win playing soft.

I actually think it’s a classy move that more teams should do personally I get what you’re saying, but I feel like the competitive integrity of the league should matter. Also to be fair, I feel like everyone is a little dinged up this time of year tbh, and frankly we probably didn’t have the cap space to sit any more guys than we did either way.

He's done a good job. Better job

He has done a better job that last few years but like Dubas fashion, about 3 years too late

It looks like he needed 3 years on the job to learn the hard way. This current team is great, he needed this team 2 years ago against Montreal
He finally came to realization you can't win with 5'5 players in your bottom 6 or 6'6 players who doesn't use their body

Petan, Malgin, Brooks, Moore, Boyd, Vessey, Galechynuk, Simmonds .... Some of these players were small or pass their time or not good. Simply because he needed those 1 year bargain contracts. He was going to prove it to the world how smart he is with thsi reclamation projects

Joe Thornton yikes. Trading for Foligno, Mrazek and even Murray. Dude has been constantly firefigting or putting out his own fire

But I'll give him credit. As i said many times, I really like the moves he made. But these moves most Leafs fans been wanting for years now

Everyone always said our D needed to get bigger, our bottom 6 needed more sandpaper. He has finally delivered on those., It took him 4 years to learn what it takes to build an actual all around competitive team

I put concerned and I have shit on Dubas a lot.

This last year he's put in some good work, enough for a 2-3 year extension.

I would put any failure this year onto Keefe and players, he gave them everything to succeed.

I agree with this as he is finally showing he’s learned what he needs to win in the playoffs. This is on the players now and Keefe now.

This for me as well.
Dubas struggled early, probably never should have had the job in the first place, but has finally figured it out it seems.
I really don't see how he won't be extended now.

And if the players fail? What is he gonna do? Just tinker with the periphery again? Or is he willing to make a big shakeup to the core?

The vote distribution on this poll is insanely even.

Dubas built a fantastic team this year. My expectation is a competitive round 2 series with Boston at the very least. If they lose to Tampa, they blew it. We are the better team this time around.

If they don't hit my minimum, it's because key players didn't live up to their contracts or expectations.

I think he's done a good job in a difficult time. Yes, he screwed up with Murray signing, but I guess he and Shanny took a gamble and it didn't pay off. But it turned out for the better as there is a solid duo in the net of which I think was much better than Andersen and Campbell. The veteran additions made sense. The Grit he addressed. I don't think the Timo Meier acquisition was even close ? If the Leafs however, lose the 1st round, I'm afraid he'll get let go as the entire franchise will have new faces.

But when it will start being his responsibility? Or is it never?
