Love it. Best scenario we can hope for is a race similar to last season, but with McDavid healthy this time. Pile on the points. Would love to see Kucherov, MacKinnon, and McDavid all cross 150.

That he knows how to read the play? How does the puck magically appear up there?

This is the first time in years I haven't drafted him in fantasy, the rest of my league finally woke up and picked him early.

Most overrated player in NHL history

Hes underrated if anything.

A year ago people weren't even ranking him in the top 10 or 15 best players despite him coming off a 113 point season (third in the league).

They literally ran this exact play a bunch of times last year which is why Kuch ended up with so many ENP last year. As soon as Hedman is near a loose puck in the corner, Kuch leaves the zone, Hedman sends it around and another forward is on the boards to chip it past the defeseman right to Kuch. Clearly a designed play and its been wildly successful at closing games out so they'll keep running it until somebody does something to defend it.

If that's where the puck ended up then you've read the play correctly or are the Canes so bad they couldn't keep possession on essentially a 6 on 4? But then again your best forward is Sebastian Aho so maybe it is that hard.

As a Canes fan I’m supposed to hate the guy but I’ve loved watching him over his career….but man he’s making it tougher lately. His lazy nonchalance in the all star thing was pretty infuriating as a fan. He had no effs to give and a floating ego can be tough to root for.

Last night he sat on the far blue line with his team defending in their zone waiting to get his empty net hat trick. People talk about him like that but I never truly believed it until I saw that. I don’t believe in asterisks but when we talk about him in terms of history a decade from now it’s going to hard to not remember that image.

The only image you have to remember is his 2 stanley cups. I've liked the Canes for awhile but does it get harder each year watching them choke year in and out.

He’s cherry picking, that’s all it is. He had no role whatsoever in deciding who had possession or even playing defense at all. @DownIsTheNewUp made a fair point above that this is something they do regularly, but that’s only to say that the coach is allowing him to cherry-pick rather than play any defensive role. This is not some 3D chess move, you can find it in your local beer league on a nightly basis.

Pavel Bure used to do this in Miami to get his 60 goals, and 20 years later it’s still one of the first things people bring up in discussing him. If he can take heat for it, so can Kuch.

Yeah, and to clarify, it's not like Kuch is just sitting in the neutral zone the whole time while everyone else plays defense. It seems to be a specifically timed thing when the Lightning (usually Hedman) are gaining possession behind the net or in the corner and then Kucherov darts for the neutral zone and using a guy in between to make sure it gets to him. It's cherry picking, but not in the sense that Kuch has gone rogue and just out there to get points. Instead I think the coaching staff are identifying scenarios where its advantageous to be aggressive toward the empty net and letting the players they trust to make the play do it.

Here's a sample of some of the top players and their empty net point stats (numbers from lockout to end of last season). Kucherov fits right in with the others, almost like the the naysayers are just haters.

I would guess if you split Kucherov 's career into halves they would look quite different in terms of ENP/GP. He's always been one of the worst defensive players in the league, his coach just now supports his statpadding
