Has any team ever done a trade like; bad contract + 2nd round pick for 6th round pick?

I think this will be the correct answer at the expansion draft. We'll give Vegas a pick, maybe as high as a 2nd-rounder to select Kruger off our roster.

Chicago trades Kruger and a 2nd to keep Panarin.

Meanwhile, we keep him this year in pursuit of that big silver thing in the playoffs.
This!! right here !!Chicago isnt playing for draft picks right now,a draft pick is worthless to them if they cant get Panarin signed

So Chicago needs a space to sign Panarin, and removing Kruger's $3.08M can obviously help. What any team is willing to give for him? Of course I mean picks and not other contracts. He's a 4th line center, who can play defense and PK.

If you want anything you are eating money it adding a first

just looked at the Hawks cap situation, you guys really don't have much wiggle room in terms of money coming off the books. Thought there would be an expiring bad contract that someone would eat for a young asset or a pick, but Kruger is really all there is...I guess that's what happens after years of contention but that's gotta be tricky

Kruger allows Edmonton to move Drai or Nuge on the wing. I'm down.
Pouliot Kruger Puljujarvi is a decent third line. Improves the PK even more. Boosts the C depth to an amazing level.
Lucic Nuge Drai could be a lethal line.
Draft picks or prospects?

No chance the Oilers touch that deal. $3M for a #4C when you have Draisiatl and McDavid to resign makes little sense.

Kruger's contract expires before then. Kruger gives them more depth so they can compete before touh contracts start coming up.

There won't be many good centers for LV to select. Kruger is a very good defensive center that might be enticing.

The primary selections from Chicago are likely Kruger, TVR, Pokka. LV will have better options for defensemen than TVR or Pokka. And before anyone says 'of course they'll take the prospect Pokka', Pokka will have to make the LV roster or be lost to waivers.

The only reason for LV to take TVR or Pokka instead of Kruger is a cap reason - if their other selections are costing them 3-4+ million per player and thus they need some cheap selections.

Edmonton's bottom 6 could use an upgrade. 2nd rounder might sound high but a 4th liner is still better than anything Edmonton would draft with a 2nd round pick.

Anton Lander fills that role just fine and he'll make as much in the next three years as Kruger makes this year.

Kruger's deal extends into the 2018-2019 season which is when McDavid needs his extension. He also gets a modified NTC starting next year that lists only 7 teams he must accept a trade to. Plus his contract may put them close enough to the cap to trigger bonus overages next year once Draisaitl gets his raise.

Kruger will not be the difference that makes the Oilers a contender this year or next. They already have a pk that is near the top of the league and have a 4th line that is actually over crowded. If ha had a n expiring contract then the deal might make sense. But not with two more years left at over $3M.

At this point the Hawks probably need to keep Kruger for the expansion draft. They need to have two exposed forwards that meet the games played rules.

There are a few teams that would gladly take Kruger at his cap hit. We would get more assets moving him now, but he's a huge part of this team and our goal is a cup. He's not really overpaid, its the Hawks cap situation and everyone's acute awareness of it that will make him more difficult to move in the off-season.

My take on Vegas is that they'll be more competitive than recent 1st-year clubs but a long way from contenders. They will prioritize youth and draft picks.

If I'm McPhee, I would select 12 d-men in the expansion draft; 8 for the NHL roster and four of those 3rd year professionals who still need a bit more AHL seasoning. Identifying these four d-men will be key. At the trade deadline I would be looking at moving 2-3 NHL d-men for 2nd/3rd round draft picks with the hope that 2-3 of those young AHL d-men are ready for promotion.

Towards these ends, TVR would hold the greatest value to me if I'm McPhee. A young RHD NHLer.
I could be swayed towards Kruger if a 2nd-round pick is coming with him. But on a standalone basis, Kruger is not more valuable than TVR or a 2nd-round pick.

Brandon Pirri is over 12 and Moore is over 13, Helm is over 14, Kruger is at 13 and change.
Kruger is 259th in TOI among NHL forwards through Wednesday. That amounts to a lower end 3rd liner or high 4th liner. Given many 4th line C's are 1st pair PK forwards....Kruger at 13:16 would appear to be in line with most 4th line C's in TOI.

He's playing 2nd line center tonight though.

I'm still thinking he's Vegas's best option for the club, but the Hawks will have to expose another forward and currently as set there is no other eligible forward that isn't containing a NMC who is signed to next year. Panik and Hartman are RFAs who could get extended then exposed but so far aren't top options. Unless TVR shows a better showing with some improvement once he gets healthy, he might not even look valuable anymore, a guy with about 5 different degrees of injuries in his last 3 seasons going back to his senior year.

I would go with Jay McClement from the Hurricanes--and maybe a late round pick added as well. Jay is a 4th liner who wins face-offs and can play the PK but will cost around 1.2 mil a year (average) for the next two years. It would give the Hawks a decent replacement for Kruger, who can be exposed at the expansion draft without a lot of hand wringing and the Canes would get a younger guy with some upside in return.

Still can't believe they gave him that contract when they had an internal replacement for him (Danault). Oh yea, and everyone on HF was defending this contract when the deal was announced.

They signed him to that two weeks after trading Danault to load up for the playoffs... the point was then they knew they had to keep him at least for this year to keep that spot.

So? They could have kept Danault and moved Kruger's rights in the offseason (like they did with Shaw).

Kruger's defense is an understatement. Back in the 2015 playoffs, Kruger alone was a nightmare for every single centerman on the Preds after Fisher went down, even when Fisher was around, Kruger gave him problems, and the Hawks still had Toews, Vermette, etc. shutting them out. The series was so lopsided for the Hawks and the only reason the Preds got a few wins was because Crawford was a sieve until the final game. (Well game 2 Hawks didn't play well, but overall Kruger alone sent fear to even the top line).
