Unless a center for the long-term is acquired directly or indirectly, no.

He should go on a heater soon-ish to level out his production for the season and reaffirm his spot in the lineup; the Canes have the wing depth that allows him to be a 3rd wheel in the 40 point range.

Wonder if the Canes will move Kotkaniemi? What would their terms be?
As BDC said, I doubt they move him. But...this FO is very unsentimental and cutthroat. If someone makes an offer (on nearly anybody), they'll listen. They don't like in-season moves when they can avoid them and whatever offer they get has to improve the Canes immediately.

But...make an offer?

I'm a fan of the Leafs, who could use a #3C on paper, and the Blackhawks, who could use any forward help.

I'd still pass on Kotkaniemi.

Exactly. Kotkaniemi might never reach what was expected, but in 2-3 years a 40-50 point center with $4,5M cap hit is a really good deal.

He's hit (or even just been on pace for) 40 points only once in his career, last year with 43. His next best season was 36 points. He's on pace for 34 this season, and has only one point in his last 17 games.

I don't think it's fair to call him a "40-50 point" player.

He's not there yet, but could be in 2-3 years, is what I meant. Time will tell if he was just having a hot streak before his injury, or if he's actually improving.

Even with the ice cold December, his 2023 year totals were 21-26-47 in 83 games. And 2023 was age 22-23 for Kotkaniemi, so it's not like he's peaked and on his way down as a player yet either.

Saying he is capable of 40-50 points is pretty reasonable for a player who just hit 47 points in his last year's worth of games as a 23 year old.

Getting that 40-50 points that he just showed would be good moving forward along with a solid defensive game. If he isn't hurt (I don't know either way) and he continues to be the same streaky player, a 40 point streaky player will be a solid 3C. Not the 2C I think Carolina had hoped for, but well worth the price Carolina paid.

Kotkaniemi and Ponomarev for Tommy Novak and a pick or one of Fabbro/Carrier/Barrie?
I don't see Carolina dealing Kotkaniemi for rentals, and certainly not for additional D when Carolina has 7 NHL D on the roster right now.

The return would likely need to be a 2C or wing signed longer-term. Otherwise, why move Kotkaniemi now?

Seems like a good fit for Pittsburgh. Lacking centers in any capacity behind 87/71. Of course, that means we don’t have what Carolina is looking for haha

Maybe one of our wingers and a 2nd rounder. If not, I get it

Yeah I understand the need, it just seems like a tough fit to find a better player with term that a team would be willing to move for him without Carolina adding a sizable plus that also makes sense. Calgary might fit the bill by the deadline if they're out of a playoff spot

Wait….why are we adding a decent prospect to this in Pono?

We don’t need to get rid of Koko. As a Canes fan I think he’s a bad fit for 2C but he’s a useful player at a decent price. I’d prefer him at 3C but RBA is never moving Staal out of that spot.

If a trade made sense and improved the Canes, sure but you aren’t getting us to add prospects for giggles.

Looking for a deal actually. Figure you may want the caproom and walk away from Kotkaniemi contract. Even give us an asset.

Any deal involving Kotkaniemi would have to be something that adds an older top 6 option coming back IMO, so can't see it.

hard no, Pono's not being added to any trade and we don't need defense. Fabbro is the only one of those that intrigues me and that's ONLY if the Canes already have a deal on Pesce moving out.

They won’t walk away from the contract. They think it’s good value. I’m sure they’d put him in a trade in the off season but as mentioned they generally don’t subtract from the lineup during the season. They tend to only add mid season, we’re playing for the cup.

They definitely wouldn’t pay someone to take him. The Canes and Canes fans generally like Koko, whether he’s lighting it up or not. I’m about as negative towards him as we get in the group, and I’m generally ambivalent about him. I’m fine with him staying and don’t think he hurts the team or the cap. My argument was always about how we needed a certain level of offensive player in the 2C spot and he wasn’t a good enough replacement. That’s not his fault, he works pretty hard and fits the system.

I’d be shocked if the Canes were looking to escape his contract at all, let alone pay someone to take it. I could see him being part of an upgrade trade.
