In case anyone asks: The deadline for buying out a player is 5PM EST today, June 30th.

That is only the deadline for filing the buyout paperwork. Players do not have to actually clear waivers before that deadline. In fact, if a team files a buyout later today before the deadline then the player would not go on waivers until July 1st, and clear on July 2nd--after the UFA signing period began.

I think that's partially it, and partially that while he played okay for us in his role, he wasn't visibly better than Petter Granberg, who I think slides in full time.
