This thread has overwhelmingly shown respect to both Bergeron and Kopitar. It's close because both are great players.

The most disrespectful one in this entire thread has been you from the start.
I apologize if that’s the case because I’m honestly being genuine.

I’m apologizing because there has been countless replies to my comment with people not happy.

I don't disagree with that, but the gap between his defensive ability and Kopitar's is very minimal. Whereas the offensive gap is visible.

But honestly I won't argue against anyone voting Bergy, I think it's extremely close. That's just how I personally view it.

If we're looking at hardware, yeah it's Bergy easily with all the Selkes. I'm just trying to compare them in terms of their abilities/capabilities whatever you wanna call it.

That's a fair way to look at it. But when I see one that is going to be remembered as one of the three best of all time in regards to defensive prowess compared to someone who will be remembered as one of the best of his era, I think the gap is quite large. Bergeron has always been consistent at that side of the ice for 12-14 years in a row while Kopitar hasn't.

Offensively, is a career average difference of 7 points a year all that much? Kopitar has a couple of better peak seasons but the consistency of Bergeron has him more closer to Kopitar's offense than Kopitar is to Bergeron's defense.

Kopitar wasn’t carried offensively by 2 superstar wingers.
That’s a pretty good way of looking at it. Kopitar for his career had Brown. If anyone watched them both play closely, you’d see that Kopitar is just on a completely different level offensively.

Kopitar did more with less for his entire career. The best winger he ever saw was Justin Williams, and he has been the entire lynchpin for the Kings since his rookie year.

If Kopitar played more regularly with the east coast still awake, this isn’t nearly as close of a debate. Always makes me think of the year Hall won the Hart, when anyone who regularly watched Kopitar knew it was his all along.

They both are all-time level of centers, but Kopitar is just better by a nose.

Kopitar had more team success and a better peak, offensively, so I went with him. Really a coin flip.

I'd argue Kopitar was the better player but as far as careers go, they're pretty equal imo. Kopitar has 2 cups and 2 selkes but Bergeron has 6 selkes and 1 cup. Career wise it's hard to pick one over the other, maybe Bergeron since his trophy case is more impressive from a historical pov.

Better Player: Kopitar, Better Career: Bergeron

Bergeron already had two 70 points years before Marchand/Pasta were on the team. In those seasons, which includes his rookie year, the concussion year+follow up season where he wasn't quite right, he averaged 61 points per 82 games.

Kopitar has:

-The better peak
-The better prime
-Better playoff runs
-More Cups
-Much better offensively
-Relied on to provide both primary offense and defense

The only thing Bergeron has over Kopitar is defense. And Kopitar is a great defensive player in his own right.

If Kopitar had the luxury of being able to focus more on defense because he had other offensive players to lead the way like Bergeron did, then the Selke gap would be minuscule at best.
