“@DarrenDreger: Last 4 yrs of Kopitar extension protected by limited no trade clause.â€

Isn't $14 million the largest salary in the league today (not AAV)? I believe the largest Crosby makes is $12 million. Also, I like how the salary goes down as the players get older. Unlike in baseball, where players get paid higher the older they get, which doesn't make sense.

Hefty cost, but had to be done.

There is NO OTHER FORWARD who has outscored his team annually, played in all situations, while having the same durability as Kopitar has.

Kane & Toews both get $13.8M next year, Shea Weber gets $14M this year, but that goes down to $12M next year.

Trying to find a bigger number......

EDIT: Searched for leagues top salaries in 16-17 and nobody beat $14M, but I am sure Stamkos will.

Someone remind me what the trade board proposals were for Kopi back when they were all hoping the Kings wouldn't be able to re-sign him. Those are always good for a laugh in hindsight.

Its a lotta cash, but **** it, Kopi is a top center in the league and guys like him don't come around too often. We aren't a winning team if he walks.

Honestly couldn't care less about the cap hit, cap implications, how overpaid he'll be in 5-6 years. I'd have been irate if he lost him over summer.

Welp, I hope your happy Kopi. This will hurt us next season. I'm glad to get him locked up, but upset he wouldn't take a slight discount to help the teams future. Pressures on Kopi now.

Maximum allowed compensation in any single year of a contract is 20% of the current salary cap. So the largest amount Kopitar could have gotten in a year is $14.28m ($71.4m * 20%).

Weber's salary is a bit flukey. He signed his offer sheet / contract in summer of 2012-2013 when the salary cap was set at $70.2m, which is why his $14m salary was allowed. Not too long after he signed it we had the 2012-2013 lockout and the cap was eventually changed to $64.3m for 2012-2013 in the new CBA. His contract was grandfathered in--the league doesn't reduce a player's salary if the cap shrinks in the future to keep compensation under 20%.

This is the first season that the cap has exceeded $70m, so likewise it's the first season anyone could have signed for more then Weber's $14m.

Contracts like these virtually guarantee that the owners will exercise their option to terminate the existing CBA on September 1, 2019. NHL GMs simply can't help themselves. The owners will correct the situation. The cap will likely be stagnant for much of the next four seasons. It's going to impact teams like Chicago and the Kings the most.

The window is this season and maybe next season. Next player up for his big payday is Tyler Toffoli the year after next. I'm just going sit back and enjoy the ride now before the inevitable result of this foolishness. Stan and the Blackhawks led the way.

What's the relevance of signing bonus vs. salary? I noticed that in each of the first two years part of his salary is $9m of 'signing bonus'.

What's the distinction between salary and signing bonus?

long...
but the salary is comparable.
wonder how this affects some of the younger guys, if at all
toffoli?

It's strictly involves the present value of money. Would you rather have $9M to invest today, or get paid $9M over nine months?

Do you really expect the kings to be contenders 5 years from now?

Don't worry everyone in the bottom six forward group and the 5-6 defensemen are easily replaced by kids in Ontario.

Its a great day for Kings fans!! Our star 1c is locked in!!
Let the rest worry about trying to sign Stamkos, we've got our boy!

I don't expect the Kings to be contenders in 3 years from now. They will make the playoffs, but without superstar talent, and Kopitar is not a superstar, you need depth. Expect guys like Lewis, King, Clifford, maybe Martinez to be gone within 3 years if Dean doesn't have some magic beans to package in a deal with Dustin Brown.

Moving Brown in the off season now becomes imperative, almost no matter what it costs.
