Anze Kopitar is on the verge of getting paid.

The Los Angeles Kings and the 28-year-old center are "inching closer" to an eight-year contract extension, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

Dreger, speaking on TSN's "Insider Trading" segment, said the Kings made a contract offer Monday, and that the extension will be eight years long. A deal isn't imminent, as the sides aren't close enough yet, but it's moving along, Dreger added.

Kopitar doesn't have any points through two games this season. He has been a King his entire career, drafted 11th overall in 2005. The two-time Stanley Cup champion has 610 points in 685 regular-season games and 60 points in 70 playoff games.

Maybe getting it done will ease Kopitar of any distractions? He really needs to focus on performing better if this team is determined to get to the playoffs and go on another deep run.

Good! Gives him more value when we blow it up next summer!

Dear Dean,

This is a huge mistake unless you are getting a major AAV discount. Oh, and f the NTC/NMC!!!

No, no, no. I was looking for a .gif where there was a stream hitting the ground and you could hear someone moaning. :)

EDIT: I guess the guy would have to be passing a stone.

I think some people are forgetting how hard it is to get #1 C's in this league. You pay the man, no other option for the Kings.

I think some people have forgotten that Kopitar hasn't played like a 1C in the offensive zone for over a year.

15th in points for centres last year while still being a shutdown centre in his career worst season. Has he fallen off the cliff at 28? I doubt it.

#1 C's are very very hard to find. #1 C's that play two ways and control the pace of the game like Kopi? Next to impossible. No matter if he had an off-year or is declined a little from his prime. He's just not a player the Kings can replace in any sense (no team really could).

The long long years between 93 and 10 should not be forgotten. Tossing away talent is just not a good idea, particularly right now while the Kings are still competitive.

So if by your definition players exceeding 60 points (on a bad offensive team) are 2C's, what exactly is your definition of a 1C? keeping in mind that the leagues leading scorer had 87 points last year.

No, i'm not saying points are everything, just speaking from an offensive perspective.

Let me say however, I don't disagree with your sentiment that they will regret the 8/72-ish deal he is bound to get.

I have never said toss him. I have said sign him to a deal that is commensurate to his current contribution. That isn't Toews-term, and Toews-money.

The big question right now is, "Is Kopitar still a dominant 1C on a Stanley Cup contender?" I'm not seeing it now, and I haven't seen it in over a year. Simply paying him a ridiculous amount of AAV on a long term deal now guarantees nothing in terms of his future performance.

Kopitar needs to break 25 goals a season to be effective and make his linemates most effective. He needs to get his shot totals up where they were season before last. He needs to get to the dangerous scoring areas to shoot.

Someone posted the shot charts comparing Kopitar and Toews from last season not long ago. Go back and take a look at those. The areas where Toews is shooting from defines a 1C.

If Kopitar is willing and able to get to those areas and shoot more often, then he is a 1C again in my eyes. Right now when he gets the puck in the offensive zone along the boards, I don't see him as a threat to get to the middle and score at all. Most of the time he passes it back to the point for a low percentage shot. Looks great for the corsi, but doesn't put many goals up on the board.
