Kopitar Selke Finalist

What'll happen is Kopitar will actually have his best year and most Selke-worthy year next year but get left off the ballot, because rep.

I'm loving this. People on this board **** down his throat all season, yet he gets the nod for two awards, this one being a pretty major one.

Dude's going to write his own contract this off-season at this pace.

Lady Byng - stupid award, players don't even want it
Selke - purely reputation award

Lol, this board salty. Talk about lame.

Did we actually need further evidence that the bafoons that vote on these awards don't actually watch any games?

If Kopitar's agent tries to use this nomination as leverage in future contract negotiations, and I was Dean, I would say GTFO and come back when you are ready to negotiate with facts.

Saying players don't want an award that has been around since 1925 and is steeped in history is itself lame.

And the 2nd Lombardi doesn't re-sign Kopitar, he would be gone...
The contract negotiations aren't just figure comparison around the league.. If that was the case Toews and Kane wouldn't be paid more then Crosby, Malkin.

If by gone you mean traded, then yes.

With a purely figurative cap ceiling of 74 million, Toews and Kane take up nearly 30% of it.

Those contracts were really dumb.

The team is paying a crazy percentage of their cap space for two players. The players are losing a ton of money to escrow. The dollar figures are gaudy, but they really aren't good for the team or the players.

I wonder how many times a player has been up for the lady bing and selke in the same season.
Typically defense players are bound to take penalties just do to pressuring the puck carrier. The act kopitar is up for both I think is pretty neat.

Nope, gone as is walking as a UFA. If LA trades Kopitar it's likely to a team going for the cup, so they aren't going to give up many, if any, current roster players. And LA isn't interested in missing the playoffs again, so they'll keep him in hopes of getting back into the playoffs and winning again. So LA will in all likelihood keep Kopitar, not sign him, and lose him for nothing as a UFA after the playoffs under your scenario.

Or they could trade him, get a bunch back for him, though it'll be a bunch of futures mostly, and then have Carter and little else behind him up the middle, likely miss the playoffs for the second straight year and likely undergo a full rebuild because the core is now a year older, quite possibly outside of the playoffs for a second straight year and might even see DL and DS let go.

If Kopitar leaves, it's likely the signal of a full rebuild because you will not find anyone like him available via trade or in UFA.

That would be piss poor asset management on Dean's part. So no, I don't think it would go down like that at all.

Lombardi isn't going to get fired even if the Kings were to miss the playoffs again next season. Dean might kick himself upstairs and Futa might take over, but I don't see that happening for quite a few years.

Once again you go to the most dire scenario. I don't know how contentious the contract negotiations will be with Kopitar, but I can't see Dean giving him 8 years with the kind of cap hit some of you are talking about. IF 8 years at a huge cap hit is what Kopitar's agent insists on, Kopitar's days as a member of the Kings are numbered.

As long as the Kings have Doughty to build around, there won't be a "full" rebuild. Not having Kopitar would change the Kings approach, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Lombardi would be fired for trading Kopitar? Um, I'm gonna say nope.
Yes. It's like Blackhawks trading Toews over salary demands. As long as the contract demands aren't outrageous you never toy with your best players.

People here were once upon delusional about the Doughty extension too - I remember people expecting discounts and whatnot where Doughty would be paid less then Keith and Weber (in the 4-5mio$ range at that time). The reality was that Doughtys contract demands were fulfilled and he got a 7mio$ contract.

I'm gonna say you are delusional if you believe Lombardi can afford losing Kopitar without getting back a better player than he is. The Kings would become pretenders - like most of the Kings teams were in the past.

Just sayin'

Funny one of his worst seasons up for two awards

I'm loving this. People on this board **** down his throat all season, yet he gets the nod for two awards, this one being a pretty major one.

Kopi nominated for both the Selke & Lady Byng on a bad year, not too shabby

Perhaps some people around here need to learn what a bad season really is. People saying that Kopitar was "terrible" this year are flat out delusional.

The Selke is the award for the best DEFENSIVE forward. Kopitar is EASILY one of the top 3 two-way forwards in the league. Yes, even this year.

We missed comfortably making the playoffs because of an anomalously bad record in shootouts and now we have people talking about trading Kopitar and Quick. I expect Doughty will be on the block here before the summer is over, probably before it starts.

Selke nomination is a fact

It should be, cause for damn sure we would not be a contender anymore
