Proposal: Knies to the Canadiens almost happened. (Sports net article )

Top prospect to me reads like a Michael Hage.

Joshua Roy is gonna be 23 years old soon and hasn't come close to cracking an NHL roster, even when we were terrible. I don't think a player like him can be considered a top prospect.

I hear Pagnotta confirmed that the unnamed prospect was neither Reinbacher or Hage.

Could have been Pickford though ?

I also call BS on this, just a big juicy bait to farm clicks out of the 2 biggest fanbases.

Habs need a C for Demidov and a RD for Hutson

Seems like it was confirmed by Marco D'amico and Friedman.

So it looks true.

It would explain the extremely bizarre shots fired with Keith Pelley randomly talking about Michael Hage in his press conference after firing Treliving. There were reports of Hughes being upset that Pelley mentionned one of our prospects.

And then, Hughes uncharacteristically defending Caufield by throwing shade at Toronto with Marner recently ?

This would explain all of that. There's no way Keith Pelley knows anything about our prospects unless he heard something that left an impression such as trade talks between Treliving and Hughes.

At first I thought it was BS but now I'm 99% convinced this happened.

I'm dumb when it comes to cap wizardry. Could someone enlighten me on how that would've worked in regards to cap compliance? The Habs had less than $2M available under the cap at the TDL unless if I recall correctly.

Surely the most obvious answer is to move Laine to the LTIR, but wasn't it reported that there was incentive for him to stay on IR as he'll be able to sign a bonus-laden deal with a lower salary base? Does that incentive apply when placed on the LTIR as well? Laine confirmed he wasn't injured, which then potentially leads to opening a can of worms (though I understand the league has let cap circumventions happen in the past; see VGK and TBL).

Other than that, is there any other internal paper transaction that could've made this happen? And it's not like there was any subsequent trade with another team as this was a very last (late) minute deal.

Imagine crying over Phoeling, McCarron, and Jarred Tinordi. Thats possible what was being given up for the player everyone dreamed Bolduc would become.
Losing Z sucks but OTOH you don't lose Hage, and to me thats worth the extra late 1st round pick that has to be given up.
It would have been bedlam if this deal went through and I really wonder the impact this has on the playoffs. I think the habs are playing for a cup right now with Knies on the roster.
Also Kap was a 20G rookie at the TDL he didn't have his horrible playoffs yet so the future looked bright with him.
Knies/Kap/Demidov as a young sub 23 year old line growing together at TDL would have looked like a bright future.
Does it suck not having 2 first round picks and not drafting for 3 years? Sure it does but when you think about it its this year and next and then if you just hold onto your picks you can restock.
This one will haunt the habs for a while every time they need some size and secondary scoring it will be in the back of our minds that Knies could be right there.

2 top 6
I'm not making that trade. Here's the thing, if you have an elite center and and elite winger, you can plug in different guys as the second winger and they can find success. But if you have two elite wingers, it's not easy to plug in any old center and still find that success.

We already have that potentially elite winger in Demidov, but we need that second elite center. We don't need a second elite winger.
2 top 6 spots to fill, one would not block the other from happening and 1 filled would be better than none. Nothing imposes one happen before the other.

And maybe all that doesn't get you a player as talented as Knies. And I am sure KH would have added protection to his picks he isn't a dummy he isn't going to leave possible lottery pick on the table. Did you see the conditions he put on the Moneyhands trade the guy knows what he is doing.

Look I would rather trade Engstrom and a 2nd for Robert Thomas don't get me wrong
But objectivly if you look at this deal its not really an overpay
Would you consider the 26th pick and the 25th pick plus a 2nd rounder playing in Russia and another random prospect overpayment for Slafkovsky? You have to give to get.
Knies is a premier PWF at 23 signed on a great contract its going to cost. 2 late firsts that are nearly 2nd round picks and the Habs 3rd best prospect and another random prospect is not an overpay for what is most likely the best player in the deal. ITs a fair price.
Not drafting 3 years in a row would suck so it is steep on our end to lose that ability but IMO adding a talent like Knies at his age is worth it.
Fair price maybe, I'm saying it's not a wise decision just because you can. Goal is to be good for a long time, this roster isn't so good IMO you blow most of your futures on a Knies, or Svechnikov, or another Slafkovsky. Knies doesn't need to be the only answer.

I listed pretty good value, Kap+Beck+1st not good enough to add forward upgrade? Newhook+Pickford+1st+2nd? Dunno seems way too soon to start dealing Zharovsky to me before doing the above first to fill the multiple glaring holes.

Hear me out... What if Treliving never planned to pull this trade, and only wanted to keep the rival Habs brass hooked on it so they did not do any move at the deadline?

Like an intentional deadline miss to sabotage a rival?

It's so interesting because Habs couldn't even fit Knies under the cap is this was the deal.

Would've been a huge trade for sure. Knies in the top 6 completely changes the dynamic of the lineup. Losing Zharovsky this early without knowing what his ceiling could be would suck, but this is the type of trade that makes the contender window open not only sooner, but stronger from its onset instead of having to wait for Zharovsky to continue his development.

Adding 2 1st and a prospect is a lot, but HuGo understands that the team is shifting into another phase of the rebuild and draft capital is not AS important as the prior years. I'm ok with losing 2 late 1st and a prospect like Engstrom as an add-on to Zharosky for a Knies trade

We would be facing Vegas right now. Knies would have been 1000 times more productive in the playoffs than Kapanen or any other plug they put besides Newhook and Demidov. And both series against Tampa and Buffalo would have been very different.

Physical presence, 23 (younger than Cole, just a tad older than Bolduc), has hands…This would have added talent and grit to our lineup.
I love Knies as much as the next person...
But that 2nd prospect was probably Michael Hage...

So you lose Hage, Zharovsky and 2 other 1st round picks for Knies... that's insanely expensive... and HuGo wouldn't even have solved the 2C issue...

Glad that trade didn't go through...ooofff

So 3 different people are just all lying about the same thing?

D'Amico's 2nd source could be Friedman and his first Pagnotta, and Friedman's source could be Pagnotta.

What I remember of the deadline is that Friedman thought the mysterious player the Habs tried to acquire was Knie, but that rumor was shutdown a few days after. And insiders shutdown the rumors that the Habs were the team that submitted a trade too late as well.

And Montréal didn't have the cap space for Knie without moving Laine first...and the rumor at the deadline is that they were trying to move Laine for a dmen.

Is it all possible the Leafs face repercussions for this? Agreeing to a trade and failing to submit it on time is bush league, and it really hindered us from making any other move at the deadline

They should give us their next available first round pick lol

I'm not a fan for that return.

For everyone saying "ohhh but our next two 1st round picks will be 20+" you're in for a rude awakening should any of our core/goalies get injured lol

Exactly.

Many assume because we did what we did this past year, it will only automatically improve in the next few years.. while that should technically be the case, there is nothing certain in pro sports.
