They should call about him everyday.

Well, Gregor edited his post

So they're still accruing space (or will be, once Brown and Ryan/Philp are sent down), but if/when they need to go into LTIR space, that extra mil is ticked on

Basically they're still on path to have 2 to 3 mil accrued, but they'll only be able to add another (roughly) 4mil on top of that vs. the full 5.15mil of Kane's LTIR space.

He had no leverage and still got a contract we can't fully bury when it turns out he still blows.
They can bury almost all of it. His cap hit if the team is in ltir is 1.74M and if they are not in ltir then his cap hit counts for 824K+350k SB is 1.174M of which all but 24k would be burial. As it stands the Oilers are 966k over the cap with a 24 man roster including Klingberg and they can only carry 23 players on the roster so obviously they’ll be sending Brown back to Bako which takes them out of the ltir pool and thus Klingberg only counts for 824+350 against the cap.

I think he'll come in around $850K, part of is just wondering if it's a 2 yr deal at that price. I don't know why, just something sticking in the back of my mind.
It better not be a 2 year deal. Way too many of those on fringe players just to try to be cap compliant.

Interesting that Klingberg was actually still a really good offensive D prior to his short injury stunted season last year in Toronto. The way people talk about him sometimes you would think he fell off a cliff 5 years ago, but his 22-23 season split between Anaheim and Minnesota had a stat line of 67GP-10G-23A-33P which prorates to 12G-28A-40P over 82 games. Interestingly only 2 of his goals and 10 of his points that year came on the PP so he was actually a pretty productive even strength player still.

I'd imagine his hip issue was also an ongoing thing for likely a few years as is typical when people get hip resurfacing surgery and it probably affected his drop off from his prime seasons.

There is a very real chance that you could be looking at a 40P calibre dman who can play 18-20 minutes a night. He certainly fits the type of D that his team is built to play around. The majority of our strong defensive game comes from high puck possession time and excellent 2-way forwards. You can hide a lot of a dman's defensive issues in a roster and system like the Oilers.

His 5v5 P/60 in the 2022-23 season was actually right on par with his last 4 seasons in Dallas. The more I dig into his numbers the more I like this signing. Gives them a nice upgrade on the 2nd PP unit as well even if they use that unit sparingly.

He's only 32 (two years younger than Ekholm), averaged 22 mins and scored 47 points just a couple of years ago. Could be a value signing if he's healthy.
I think a good chunk of those points were on the Powerplay, which he probably won’t get many minutes on this year. He was also a minus 28.

I’m not a huge fan of the signing, but hopefully has something in the tank

The 2022-23 season he produced at a P/60 at 5v5 as good or better than his last 4 years in Dallas.

He had 27 points 5 on 5 and 20 points on the PP, though only 1 PPG.

Keep in mind he was signed to a 4.5M contract just one year ago, but health obviously prevented him from living up to that. I think he definitely earned that contract with his last healthy season and the hope is he can get back to that after the surgery.

I agree but we are talking about few 100k from being totally buriable

The big thing is performance bonus, which I assume is not included.

Basically every day he'd be down we'd still incur a cap hit of $3065 which is the equivalent to a $588K annual hit.

So say he fails outright and we kick him to the minors at the deadline, he'd cost the team about $120K towards the cap from the deadline on.

"Free Stuff!!"

- Stan Bowman(probably lol)

Solid low risk test-drive on a veteran player with extensive NHL second pair experience. Can he play at that level missing more than a year with a significant rare surgery to correct his injury? All likelihood is no. But if he can provide NHL depth 3RD/7th defenseman with his experience, length, and puck moving/processing ability it helps to improve this team's bonafide NHL depth.

Highly doubt this stops the Oilers from targeting a significant defensive upgrade.

Credit to Bowman who has picked over waivers for a former 1st round pedigree Kapinen, a project early prime years d-man Regula, and now a dice roll on a mystery box with a real good runway of NHL experience. This is Go Year. They will be pursuing all avenues big and small to upgrade this prime window team. So why not throw another Klingberg on the fire.

I hope management has all the cap stuff figured out and it doesn’t hurt us this year or next.

But doesn’t exactly feel like a free asset.

Hopefully he does well here.
