He won't last the year in the AHL. He will be on the Blues by the trade deadline unless something crazy happens to keep him down. He will be full-time next season for sure

What makes you so certain about this? He looks so unpolished, he would be better served development-wise to get more ice time. Even if he could be passable in the NHL this year, it would be counter productive.

I agree, everything I've seen and read about him indicates that he's raw and will need time to develop. No harm in that IMO. He could turn into an exciting player

Not trying to argue too much but I would question how much of that is from his shoulder injury? Im ok with the general pumping the brakes, but managment sure seems to want to pump the tires.

They're always going to speak highly of draft picks because the context is upside, not what their immediate impact will or could be.

The tools, size, skating, vision, and IQ appear to all be ready to force his way up. I don't see him needing that much polish at all - if only to get used to the new ice. I think his skills are that of a top 3 prospect in a good draft, and those players often start in the NHL. The Blues still need offense, and there is no one more ready to add that to the team than Kostin. We can't acquire a player like that without moving big pieces, so I'm wondering about management viewing him as a TDL acquisition similar to how they viewed Berglund last year. He would be perfect on our third line platooning up to the second as necessary.

I suppose you could call it a strong hunch, but I also think it would be best for his development to get a taste of playoff hockey early. His size, speed, and skill would be welcome even if he looked a little lost on defense.

Out of curiosity, how many minutes of gameplay did you watch of Kostin that was not a highlight reel? I have not seen near enough to make an adequate prediction about his progress. However, my spidey sense begins to tingle with such crazy predictions like yours that are given with such assurance. In my experience, anyone who talks up a late first pick AFTER the draft, but not much before the draft is mostly going off of hype and not actual eyes-on information. Less than a month ago we had a poll on who we would pick at 20. Lehterasenkshow did not pick Kostin who was available, but picked Poehlling instead. So I would guess your opinion on Klim has changed since then. Since he hasn't played a game in that time, it was either based on the prospect camp, which isn't a good indication of NHL readiness or on hype.

This is honest curiosity here. Whats the negatives about Kostin? From what ive read.

Pros
big body
Great skater
Great hands
Great shot
Good IQ
plays a north/south game, but is still a skill player
plays a heavy game

cons
Young
Over confident
Missed time

everything seems to point to him succeeding in the NHL, he checks all the boxes. He doesn't rely on one skill to score, he's not a perimeter player but sounds like he can score from distance. I mean, other then his shoulder delaying his progess....I cant really pick a flaw other then his "NHL or bust" attitude. I can see that being an issue if coachs tell him he's not ready for the NHL and he disagrees, and cries about it.

The biggest one I can think of is that he doesn't know how to use his teammates effectively enough. He tries to do too much himself.

I'm not down on him at all, but I think he is earlier in his development than a couple posters here. I've only started scouting him since the draft, so my impressions are almost entirely 3rd hand. But I do take note that Blues officials have all said he is a long way off from the NHL.

There's also consistency issues, he'll tend to go missing for stretches, and we need to see better play against men his own size when he can't physically dominate them.

Kostin is high upside, but he's a boom/bust type that needs to round out his game. The tools look great, but management has always said he's not close to being ready.

Just how some were overly negative with Thompson last year, I think some are being overly positive with Kostin. Let's just see how he does in Chicago next season, not much else matters until then.

Imo, most of the consistency issues talk comes from the scouts that have seen him mostly in the WJAC - he was already injured there and didn't exactly give it all, although if you think about it that way, he gave it all just by playing there at all (if he wouldn't, there would be issues replacing him as the injury happened in the last pre-tournament game).

It's easy to get excited about a giant 18 year old Russian right wing that's highly touted and has a legit skill level, but I totally agree with what your saying. There's no way of knowing how he'll perform at the NHL level yet, seems like it would be ideal for Kostin to start in the AHL and get adjusted to the North American rink size and style. Let him light up the AHL for a bit and get some confidence and momentum going.
Anything can happen, I'm super stoked for training camp to start.
