Kitchener Rangers 2024-25 Season Thread, Part III

Although he didn’t end up on the scoresheet, I thought Diracollo was great last night. Threw some big hits and moved the puck really well.
Diracollo threw one hit last night where the noise was so loud we could hear the thump all the way from the Aud to our couch in front of the tube. Has to be one of the best body checkers in the league. On a side note I thought the team played a decent 60 minutes where they let up a bit in the 2nd. Jussi wasn't quite as satisfied. He thought they could have done a better job managing pucks. This is what I like about Jussi. He tells it like it is and doesn't hand out compliments too easily despite the proddings of an interviewer post game.

Did anyone notice if Headrick played after getting crunched along the wall? He skated straight to the bench and I don’t recall seeing him. Hope I just missed him out there.

My son was watching the refs at the next stop in play. They were obviously talking about that hit because the one ref tapped his shoulder and the other his chest. Must have been saying, glad it wasn’t me!
Noticed the same thing about period 2. Came out slow and lazy, and then a switch turned on and the rest of the period was in Owen Sound’s D zone. And it was all 4 lines doing it.
Will need that tonight against Erie, who are playing much better lately.

This is such a f***ed up league
How can you call that back
Yea. Agree with the coach. Think they focussed so much on if Swick tipped it, they forgot to look and see his stick was at, or just below the crossbar.
Right team won this one. Along with the disallowed goal, we got a bogus penalty shot on a play that was 3 feet offside. Outstanding game for Lam. As Jussi says, he is at his best when he keeps the motor in high.
I noticed Alfano getting in Parsons face after they scored. Whatever he thinks that will accomplish, I think it says that Parsons is in their kitchen big time!

Just listened to a recent intermission interview with former Ranger Joe Coombs.

He mentioned that his son plays in the USHL (Dubuque) and thanks to the CHL / NCAA agreement, the Providence College commit will likely find his way onto an OHL roster next year. Despite his hometown Dubuque being WHL territory, he’d qualify for the OHL since dad Joe played in the league.

He’s OHL undrafted so I’d assume he’d either sign with an OHL team as a FA or be drafted by an OHL team in April.

I’m wondering if MM will try to sign him. He is a late birthdate ‘06 and currently ranked at 115 overall by NHL Central Scouting among NA players for the 2025 NHL draft. Might be a good idea to try and sign this player as a FA.

A whole bunch of questions:

Is there a deadline as to when you can sign FA’s? Oshawa signed OHL undrafted Noah Powell, pre trade deadline.

Can a team sign a FA after the deadline? Does a team have until February 15 to get a player signed or was January 10 the cutoff?

Does a player have to be your property to be signed between January 10 and February 15?

Based on the rules pointed out during the last OHL podcast, once a player plays games for his current team after the January 10 trade deadline, they are no longer eligible to play in the OHL this year. So that means a guy like Adam Valentini cannot be signed and play in the OHL this year.

But regarding Ritter Coombs, supposing he’s played games making him ineligible for this season, could the Rangers sign him as a free agent before the April OHL draft? Or has that ship sailed and Coombs has to go into the draft?

The joke's on them..............they didn't score enough goals. Hehehehehe!
Players try to get under the skin of the opposing goalie all the time. Parsons is the top dog this year in this league. It’s only natural that players are gonna try to do whatever they can to get him off his game.

Very, very few have been successful in doing that this year.

A player has to be on your 50 man protected list to be signed up until Feb 15 ( approx). Would not be able to sign a free agent. Also you need to have a card open to sign a player.

Then I suppose Noah Powell must have been on Oshawa’s 50 man protected list?
Or does that list have to be finalized by Jan 10?

Hope I can touch on the whole draft scenario stuff even if it’s kinda grey even to me…

Basically every U16 AAA player in Ontario (save the odd Quebec-based player in Ontario) is automatically eligible for the draft. American’s are also eligible on a by-state (eligibility) basis and deemed eligible by the league and their Central Scouting group.

Leading up to the draft, teams can also add certain players (max 5?) to the eligibility pool (ie: Coombs since he’s not an ‘09 in this case) which is what a team must have done last year to make John Mustard eligible, allowing teams to maybe add some under the radar kids they like that CS hasn’t added.

My personal understanding would be that Kitchener could sign him as a Free Agent, not sure when (likely have to be after the draft?), if he wasn’t added to the eligibility pool and drafted.

Don’t take this as gospel but I’m pretty confident it’s on the right track…
