Kitchener Rangers 2024-25 Season Thread, Part III

View attachment 959080If Pinelli wouldn’t waive the NTC anywhere but Kitchener, and the Rangers were lowballing them offers I think this is what ended up being the end result
Maybe the Rangers weren't interested in Pinelli with all the changes they made already. Rehkoph was their big splash.
Fans would of liked Pinelli's game if he came but it never happened. Too many changes can upset the apple cart. Trying to please everyone with ice isn't easy with a boat load of players. Onward and upward.

I am officially on Sale watch. Although, he may have gone home for holidays because of the tourney, and an extended leave was granted. Not holding my breath.

12 hours ago. He is in La Quinta wherever that is. Just a hope that CV said take a week off and then head to Kitchener. More then likely returning to CV.

OMG, this is your worst take since "COVID isn't going to be that bad."

The Rangers went for it the last two years. No one here is afraid of London. We just don't want to gamble away the future on a 20% chance of beating them in a series. We can't count on Windsor or some other feisty upstart beating them earlier, either.

If the Rangers were sitting on a bunch of picks, fine, roll the dice with Parsons; the London fans' meltdown would be epic if the Rangers pulled it off (sorry, guys, you know it's true). They aren't.

I do think the fixation on 2027 among some parts of the fanbase is a bit odd. We're not Saginaw, we don't need a backdoor pass to the Mem Cup, thanks.

The Rangers did not go for it last season. They traded both Hamara and Schmidt, then added Sale and ? from Barrie thinking they were two season additions.

The Rehkopf trade only really makes sense if McKenzie anticipated the CHL/NCAA rule change, though. No one trades their best player and WJT guy in August. And I mean that literally, players of Rehkopf's calibre just aren't traded pre-season.

I don't think the bar for McKenzie should be Spott or Papineau, either. There's no reason the Rangers can't have a top 5 GM in this league.

2003 was kind of before big deadline deals took hold, no? Though I also recall the idea floated that Eminger returning was the big deadline "add" that year. Mason and Shutron was also about as big an add as they come.

Anyway, good for McKenzie if he lowballed Ottawa, and even better for the Rangers' young guys if they exercised their no-trade clauses. They're there for a reason. And hey, players want to be here, that's a good thing.

I have no problem with players here using NTC. I’d rather play for Jussi then Cameron 100.%.

“Better situation than most teams”. Is that how we evaluate a GM? Not for me. Are we in any position to hang a banner. Don’t think so. Should have moved assets for the future. Let’s revisit your assessment of MM when we get bounced by London in 4 straight, not even close, games yet again.
The Rangers did get swept last year but it was closer than a dominant 4 game sweep in my opinion. 2 of the games were 1 goal games until a late empty net was scored, and a 3rd was a 1 goal game until the end.

We have been through good GMs and bad GMs in Kitchener. I put MM up there. The "better situation than most teams" was meant more as a slight to other teams. A good GM will recover from mistakes he makes. DeBoer made his mistakes too as GM and was able to recover. I like MM and companies assessment of talent. He had one horrendous draft with Hage, Longacre...etc. but dont know what was said in those conversations. Feel like he made up for it the next year with Romano and Reid so far. Look at the total body of work, yes we can revisit later.

Hamara wanted out for more playing time and Schmidt landed on MM's doorstep after the decision was made to keep Martin for when he recovered. That being said, I do agree, they weren't going for it last year, but they did overachieve. Seems to be the Jussi way these days.

The Rehkropf deal was made with the intention of being sellers. Our team over performed and changed the situation. The CHL\NCAA rule change also made it easier to pivot from seller to contender. Things happen, its more of how you adapt. And it might be against popular opinion....I do think MM is a top 5 GM in this league.

I think early MM got some questionable advice from his predecessor who is still hanging around the organization.

Mexico

Decent town to do the usual tourist stuff. Sale is doing the Canadian thing and enjoying a swim while the locals have their coats on 🥳

If Jussi doesn't win coach of the year this year I don't know why they even hand out the award.
IMO he should have won last year. Nothing against Laxdal but he was handed the keys to the anointed champions and Jussi got a rebuild team believing and started building something great a year early.

Second year Jussi has been great. If he can work a system in for the PP, these playoffs may get interesting.

They absolutely went for it last year. They traded Hamara because he demanded a trade and Schmidt because they had four overagers. If Sale and Savard were meant to be two-season additions, then McKenzie really messed up that trade.

If you want to wave the white flag before the season starts, you need to have the courage to go all the way. As for McKenzie as a top 5 GM, from the Dennis hire, to going all in in 2022-23, to having as many conference final appearances in the last five seasons as Flint and Sarnia, that's a tough case to make IMO.

This next 3 years will go a long way into cementing MM's status and legacy. Right now he's finally hired a coach that's able to develop players. He's also had some things break his way with regards to draft picks. Even with the bad draft year where Hage and Longacre didn't report, he recouped with getting Romano with the supplemental first round pick. He's also had quite a few NCAA commits land in his lap.

It's up to him to get it to the finish line now. That doesn't necessarily mean winning the OHL championship because only one team gets to hoist the trophy every year. But he better get awful darn close and do everything in his power to do so.

Its not "waving the white flag", junior hockey is cyclical...even for powerhouses, even for pretenders and inbetween. You come up with a game plan at the start of the season and adapt from there. Most teams do it that way to setup for the best success (either now or the next season..whatever). You dont have to stick to the gameplan if its not right.
Yes Dennis didnt work out.....2 years ago buying while in 8 place didnt work out or make sense....you can pick any GM and find faults.
Finding-trading Ellinas, Campbell when considered cast offs. finding free agents like Adrian Misaljevic. Drafting talent like Romano/Reid/Lam etc. Convincing flyer picks to come like Priham, Ellis, Humphreys. And going out of the standard norm and finding one of the best junior coaches I have seen in Jussi.
Anyone can pick apart the fault but looking at the total of his work so far and looking around the leagues 19 other GMs, yes I put MM in the top 5 for sure.

They did go for it last year with the future in mind. Savard should be here this year but retired - likely due to injury. Concussed here in the post season.

Who on here had Sale playing pro this year in the AHL based on his season before the last trade deadline? As did Mesar, he struggled as a 1st year import and a second year in the OHL should have been ideal. He’s sticking with CV but as a 19 year old, he still may be better suited developing here this year. But that’s CV’s choice.

MM, along with everyone else, saw both these players as two year players.

Josh brown in his articles today.
-Rehkopf wanted a deal done in the summer rather than after world juniors
- Rehkopf views the Rangers assistant’s as guys that could be head coaches in the league right now
-Rangers were never close on anything
- Several Ranger players were in demand
