Personally I can't fathom giving up a first round pick like Headrick for anything less than a top ten player in the point stats. The issue is those players are all on teams that at the will take some sort of run this season. McCue is at slightly less than a point per game and is around the 50th spot.
The top players are at close to 70 points. Some players are being over valued because their names get tossed around IMO. GMs that give up a 1st rounder should get a top end skilled player that is guaranteed to make an impact going into the new year.

thats what happens every trade market. teams pay for today and its only getting more and more expensive.

While that may be true, successful teams don’t overpay for today. Headrick for McCue is the definition of overpay. Trading a player with huge upside for one that may have reached his best makes no sense. Reel it in, and throw another line out there for a better option.

thats why london is always competitive, they generally never trade a player who has upside for a rental. when they move someone, they rarely turn out.

And yet Niagara keeps biting....

The worst is still the Austin Watson heist, Peterborough should have been contracted for that.

Also the Hunters are great at pumping the tires of a player that doesn't fit their prototype. Opposing GMs have fallen into that trap more than once over the years.

And to think at the time that Spott said his offer for Watson was better. He should have easily outbid London.

Losing out on Watson cost us the series vs London that year.

Headrick for McCue or Pinelli straight up seems right to me. For Kingston or Kitchener, I would prefer McCue a bit more than Pinelli.

We feel that way, but does MM? Not necessarily with Headrick in play, but 07’s and picks?

I would have done Smith for Ando straight up and then tried to find a discount vet depth D to fill Andos spot. Huge miss.

I agree 100%.
Gibson moved ahead of Ando on the depth chart. But not that much.

With Roberts asking out of Brantford, he would’ve been a good replacement for Ando. And he has a better shot at an OA season next year as well.

"Star power" perhaps wasn't the best choice of words. I'd include Azevedo (led the league in scoring), Halischuk (played for team Canada), and Spaling (named to Canada's WJT camp, probably would have made the team is he didn't come down with mono) and maybe even Boedker (top 10 pick) in that category, though. This year's leading scorer is, bless him, Adrian Misaljevic.

The 2015 Oshawa Generals might be a better example of a team that was more than the sum of its parts, with no real stars other than Dal Colle (top 10 pick) until they added McCarron (another NHL first rounder).

All that said, I'm coming around a bit to adding if the "flyer" talent pipeline is still flowing and the sellers are interested in some of the surplus young talent.

The 2015 Gens were a big physical team with an absolute lockdown defensive core. They were able to shutdown McDavid in the final when nobody thought it was possible. No real star power but a perfect blueprint to follow for playoff success.

I could live with some of our lower tier 07s and 08s being dealt, although I really don't think it will get us any further. At the end of the day this team won't have enough size and grit to win it all. Playoff hockey is a different animal.

Rangers aren't in the position to build a contender this season. Why give up a 1st round pick for a round or two. That's not building for the future. Not sure what MMs agenda is this season. If he goes for it again what will fans think if he dips into the draft cupboard?

I hope the Gibson trade makes MM realize how pathetically understocked our pick cupboard is. All of our young guys aren’t going to blossom into top 6 forwards and stud Dmen, so we are going to have to make a deal (or 2) like that in our go for it season, and we won’t be able to win those trades because we are light on assets.
