I'm not sure he's worth the picks, which I believe is 3 2nd rounders.
But it would be another strong forward....
We should know Monday either way!

You're probably right, but I hope for Kingston's sake that it's posturing. Kingston is still behind Missy, Oshawa, and Peterborough in the east, and if their plan is to sneak into a top-four slot with a bad team and get blown out in the second round again like last year, I'd rather take the picks and regroup for 2019 when Robertson and the Euros are nineteen and the rest of the supporting cast has had another year of development. (Kingston had nine goals from 98s last year. Nine!)

That said, perhaps the price for goaltending (or even OAs) will be higher this year. We know Owen Sound will be buying. I like your suggestion of waiting until October/November and hoping a team panics and overpays. Makes sense if you don't think you can get fair value early. Helvig to Owen Sound makes too much sense to not happen, though. (Assuming McNiven and Palmu aren't back.)

I understand what you're saying. The Fronts seem to have to have a lot go their way to contend next year. I think the mentality is different in the east than it is the west. Here, we're used to only "going for it" if the team is very, very strong. A team that's a contender in the east most years, is a likely seller in the west most years. I think many teams in the east know they could be that squad that gets on a roll and floats to the top of their conference.

Truth be told, if he were to report, and we're to get 2 years out of him as a top six forward, three 2nds would be a fair price to pay when you consider what some teams have paid for similar players of the same caliber for just one or less seasons.

And if he were ever play an OA season......

People have Liska and Hugg penciled into the top six before they've graced the ice at the Aud. No reason a former 1st round OHL pick can't be looked at in the same way.

Just saying.

Maybe I just feel that we could use the picks on a different kind of player. Tortora is a small skilled forward, which we have plenty of.
Would like to see the team go after another power forward.

Yes, I think you're right. Points further to the conference imbalance, because this is a crazy way to run a team. But the East has challenges recruiting, as we've seen. I'd certainly be happy with Helvig in a Rangers uniform.

I'm assuming the Tkachuk quote is a joke (and a pretty funny one, in my opinion!). I think three seconds for Tortora is reasonable, though. That's basically what Rippon went for. Tortora is so tiny, though--like, Daniel Ehrlich small--that I think there's a bit of risk there, though as been floated, there's perhaps some OA potential as well.

I guess the question for Tortora is what his end game is. He's variously listed from 5'6" (HockeyDB) to 5'8" (eliteprospects), undrafted, and would be among the shortest players in the NHL were he to make it. He's obviously skilled, and there have been many successful guys of his size in the past (Fleury, Gionta, Descharnais), but his odds have to be long. He may be happier taking the free education knowing that there's a good chance he'll need the backup plan.

I think coming to the OHL would improve his chances of getting drafted and making the league, but perhaps not enough that it's worth foregoing the $200,000 US.

Yeah, it's totally not efficient at all. It's like going to the casino and taking that pull on the slot machine (extreme example, I know), just because this particular casino's machine is slightly more likely to payout than the one across town, when one could just take the money home and invest it, watch it grow and then reap the benefits when it matures (and compare money stacks with the other gamblers who blew it all at taking cracks at the slot machine a couple years earlier).

The best play, to maximize earning potential (or winning championships), is to hoard your assets for a couple years and bide your time, rather than hope for a perfect storm of a bunch of bounces going your way with development, health, other teams faltering, etc. This of course assumes one can't pull off the London model (or the Kitchener model under deBoer), and not many clubs have the resources or the personnel to pull off this model.

But I suppose these things are nuanced. It assumes these clubs are run like Mike Illitch runs his clubs, solely as a hobby and for winning. As we know from when the books were opened recently, many teams have a financial balancing act going on, and can't always afford to ice a losing team. Thus, that may change their risk assessment. Times like this it makes me glad to be a Rangers fan, even though it's been frustrating losing out to London in recent years.

Rickard Hugg is heading over today!
Glad we got both guys to report, now let's hope they have the impact we think they will!

Ivan Lodnia is an appealing option. He's a 1999 right winger who was Erie's 1st pick in the 2015 draft. He was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2017 NHL draft by Minnesota.
24 goals and 32 assists in 66 games last season. 16 goals and 23 assists in his rookie season. He can score goals and we need another goal scorer.

Erie doesn't have a 2nd or 3rd round pick for the next 5 seasons. They'll want picks and maybe a player or 2. We have options to offer in both areas.

OHLInsiders is simply speculating.

Erie Otters reporter Victor Fernandes tweeted about a possible trade on August 11. The Stanley deal was reported first by Josh Brown. The Rippon deal was first mentioned by Ryan Kennedy of the Hockey News.

@ErieOtters eventually may trade Ivan #Lodnia, but now is not the time #erie @OHLHockey http://goerie.com/sports/20170810/otters-need-lodnia-to-produce-not-as-trade-bait …

Fair enough! Some of these reports seem to get lost in my news feed so my ears perked when I saw Lodnia and Kitchener in the same sentence.

Sorry, I was only commenting on OHLInsiders, not commenting on you at all. I would love for Lodnia and Tortora to be in Rangers Blue.

Oh no, I know what you meant! I follow Brown and Kennedy (just followed Fernandes now). Just seems that I always see OHLInsiders on my feed reporting on it. Not doubting the other guys are on it first.

The Tortora situation on instagram seems very interesting. Hopefully it's a sign of him coming.

I suspect if this was happening it would've by now.
No opinion either way on him coming or not.

Players that we haven't really considered for the team are the players drafted in the 2017 OHL Under 18 Priority Selection draft.
Round 1; 12th overall – Kobe Desmond (LW), Vaughan Kings
Round 2; 32nd overall – Reece Bolton (RW), Carleton Place Canadians
Round 3; 52nd overall – Jackson Norlock (D), Pembroke Lumber Kings
Round 4; 72nd overall – Anthony Tremonte (G), Niagara North Stars
Round 5; 91st overall – Ben Addison (D), Central Ontario Wolves

Should be an interesting camp, guys like Yantsis and Gentles among others will be in tough to keep their spots. I haven't heard much about commitments of the above players, but Reece Bolton is a player that I had a few viewings of last year and he impressed. With the lack of depth at RW I could see him making a push. Can't speak to Desmond as much but I am sure he will be in the mix.

Looks like McKenzie isn't screwing around. Doesn't seem to have filled the camp with players who have no shot at making the team or at the very least APing out of Jr B. Small roster, not a lot of spots up for grabs either. He wants to get right down to business
